Official: Liverpool offer Roberto Martinez the manager's job

FSG has offered Roberto Martinez the Liverpool job, according to Latics Chairman Dave Whelan.

Martinez met with FSG yesterday in Miami for talks about the possibility of replacing Kenny Dalglish, and according to Whelan, Martinez has been offered the job.

He told Sky Sports:

"Roberto had a very constructive meeting. They made an offer and he has agreed to consider it"

Martinez remains the odds-on favourite for the job, and unless the Spaniard turns it down - which seems unlikely - he will be Liverpool's next manager.

Having said that, Martinez turned down the Aston Villa job last season, so anything is possible.

Whelan also confirmed that further talks between Martinez and FSG will take place over the next week.

7 years ago today we won the European cup in the most dramatic European cup final ever. Today a guy that has done nothing but keep a team from getting relegated is going to be our manager. This is the end. Mid table mediocrity for years to come. The club is clearly run by people who do have a clue what they are doing.

Scouse8120 said...

If this is true then I wish Martinez the best of luck and I hope he can turn things around for our beloved club (in terms of league results that is), although I would have preferred to have seen a more seasoned/experienced manager at the helm!

Deebo said...

We have to be careful here.

If he does ultimately take the job then we have to support him to give him any chance whatsoever of succeeding.

We can't have another situation like we had with Hodgson where everybody was on his back from day one. We'll never get anywhere like that.

Jaimie K said...

Totally agree. I have no problem with Martinez getting the job. In fact, I think it's quite exciting. I would personally prefer Van Gaal, but RM is a great candidate too.

It's not just his management potential; his personality fits LFC like a glove; he's a top man; a genuinely nice guy, and after the miserable paranoia and victim complex instilled by Dalglish, that will be extremely refreshing.

Padraig O'Connor said...

Not too keen on this news. Doesn´t seem a very ambitious manager choice. Although Whelan seems to be shouting his mouth off about everything so you never know...

Absolutely right. Lets stop with all the "mediocrity" and "relegation zone" negative comments and give him the same support most gave Kenny when he first came in. IMO it wasn't just Kenny's appointment as caretaker that helped us have a great finish to the 2010-11 season, it was fan confidence coupled with that.

Johnlennon123 said...

I honestly cannot believe it has come to this. I am not saying its the end of the world or anything.....I am just actually surprised. I always thought that the least experienced choice they would have risked would have been AVB. Martinez better pray Rafa gets a job fast....unfortunately, it may be a tough road otherwise.

I hope you are right, I really do but I can't say I am excited with this at all and I really don't look forward to this season. I hope players we are trying to get and existing players don't feel they way I do and they will give the best the new manager.

I just feel sad that we didn't get the best out there. Maybe he is the only one out there who is interested with us.

One thing that the FSG have proven to us fans is their stone-cold approach to running the club. With Martinez being a top candidate and quite possibly our new coach, then it just goes to show that the owners are truly trying to "rebuild". I do admit I am curious as to how Martinez will approach the new role; one thing for certain is he will have more a better squad to work with, not to mention new additions the squad (G. Ramirez,...). As fans we can only sit back and see what unfolds for the club, and hope that the reports of Guus Hidink being linked with the club are true. YNWA!!!!!

Liverpool are as expected now shopping in the bargan basement.liverpool supporters are partly to blame for this situation. They got the hopeless Dalglish the job after he was sacked in his two previous jobs. The gap between the top four will widen more over the next number of years and Liverpool will remain in the second tier of the Premiership. He will be given the money from the Suarez sale to spend but will not be able to attract any worthwhile players.

Johnlennon123 said...

I guess I just hope Spurs don't beat us 9-1. Or we lose to united by 5-0 in three out of five games.

Jaimie K said...

It's this kind of needless prejudice against other teams/managers that gives football fans a bad name. Why would Whelan lie? What does he have to gain? Martinez obviously told him that FSG had offered him the job, which is exactly what any manager would tell their existing Chairman if it happened. Just because you don't like the news doesn't mean the person who passed it on - i.e. Whelan - is somehow untrustworthy.

BoredwithDave said...

Shame, poor old Dave Whelan - he's just using this as an opportunity to get some PR for himself and that little pisswilly club of his -:)

The only game wigan "played anyone of the park" was when they beat Newcastle 4-0 the other games i think you were watching something we wern't, there are clearly better managers out there than Martinez but i will support him if he gets the job just think if he has a poor 1st half dozen games it will be like Hodgson all over again and we don't want that the team and fans and manager have to be as one

Johnlennon123 said...

In all honesty, I wanted Rodgers (if I had to pick someone young). Even though he is also somewhat unproven. He is more pragmatic, and is heavily influenced by Barca's philosophies. Also he was an understudy to Mourinho, and has fantastic man management skills, and his side conceded far less goals.

Well it looks like it is over now. Interesting days ahead, will support him regardless. At least he seems good with the media.....nice change.

Deebo said...

It is a risk, no question, but I think we need to give him the chance to succeed. Not all of us were over the moon with Dalglish's appointment but got behind him nonetheless.

If he does crack, then let it be because he couldn't get the team to work, not because the fans made his life hell

Jaimie K said...

It's going to be Hodgson all over again. The Pro-Benitez Cult are going to be on Martinez's back from day one; as you can see from the comments, they already are.

I think it will be different this time though: Hodgson had no support from the Owners, and they clearly didn't see him as a long term solution.  Martinez will have the full support of FSG, which will strengthen his position immeasurably.

gideon said...

Either our owners are uncertified geniuses and are being advised cleverly. Or, the rumours about them wanting the club to be self sustaining are true. I believe the latter after having a real think about this. I wish the new manager luck. I would hope his stipulations include having a reasonable transfer pot each season. They say Martinez is responsible for the passing philosophy instilled at Swansea after his stint there. Whatever happens, his work won't happen overnight. So, i hope everyone would give him full support. Even though like most of us. I am literally scratching my head over what's happened since Rafa went.

gideon said...

The end started when Rafa went. Most people couldn't see it.

If he has got the job we MUST get behind him. I agree it's quite an exciting appointment. Dan said...

This is not Whelan's place to talk to Skysports, it's ridiculous - Neither FSG, LFC or Martinez have issued a statement about this so why does Whelan feel he should publicly speak to the press about it? It is not his place and is a terrible way to work, he should take a few lessons from LFC on private dealings. HE IS A JOKE!

gideon said...

What like listening to the fans and appointing a club legend? Only for him to limp to a CCup final victory. Show piss poor tactics in the FA cup final and finish 8th having spent 110million on incoming players. Dalglish always was an accident waiting to happen. Its a shame it did. But, the reality is the above. No owner in their right mind would make the same mistakes twice.

Guestymcguest said...

Hi Jaimie -

This isnt about agreeing or disagreeing with what he has said - I just think its grossly unfair on Martinez.   Im sure that FSG have other names in the frame but the focus has been on Martinez.  While other candidates are going privately through the interview process, I know Martinez's exact whereabouts for the last week.

Whelan is, of course, entitled to his opinion and as we are curently in a news vacuum regarding the managers position the media are bound to speculate.  Whelan must be a godsend given the ammount of airtime he has had.  I just think its unprofessional in the extreme to discuss details of a job application process.

Hoq said...

Well I spose his teams do get the ball down and play. But we have now payed off millions to Rafa, Hodgeson, Kenny, and Wigan to get to here

DP said...

I could not agree more.  I think the whole Suarez affair poisoned Kenny with the media, whereas Martinez is a breath of fresh air and never ducked anything - even when Wigan were really struggling.  As I posted yesterday, the appointment of Martinez with Van Gaal in Sporting Director role could be perfect. Whilst I accept that Liverpool were at a lower ebb when Bill Shankly was appointed, like Martinez he had never managed a top club - yet look how that turned out!  FSG are no fools and let's be honest, they have an awful lot of money at stake here!  They (and those advising them) clearly see something they like about him so we should stop bitching and get behind him.

That's nonsense mate. I loved Rafa and thought his sacking was stupidly timed given the climate. I stand by my thoughts that Hodgson was unsuitable 4 the club. To the people decrying Martinez because he's only the manager of Wigan, remember that before he was Liverpool manager Bill Shankly was manager of Carlisle United, Grimsby Town, Workington and Huddersfield Town.

Now before anyone jumps down my throat with an idiotic reactionary post I'm not saying that Martinez willl be as successful as Shankly (assuming he takes the job), I'm just saying that we have to give him a fair chance (though I sadly suspect that Rafa's name will be sung from the rafters at the first sign of trouble).

I hope he uses his Spanish connections to bring us some of the brightest and best young Iberian talent - or uses some of what we have coming through, i.e. Suso, Teixiera, Toni Silva, hell, even Pacheco might get a new lease of life with the new boss.
Good luck, Roberto and welcome to the family!

Martinez wasnt my first choice, but if Van Gaal is DoF, then that team up could be good enough. I like the fact that when wigan play well, they are very direct, and that is what we lacked last season at several points in the season

Haven't checked other forums and not going to, I'll take your word for it.

If season ticket holders don't like it then they shouldn't renew this year.

FSG own the club and will do what they please. Hopefully Martinez negotiates a stronger position for himself as suggested by Whelan.

I believe a manager should have final say in signings.

Hodgson situation was different, he was put in place by Hicks / Gillet regime in place of Rafa. Almost anyone would have gotten a backlash from fans in those circumstances, esp with the poor performances.

At least don't have to worry about him dragging us any further down. Martinez is top quality compared to the royalty. the only way is up with RM...

Either you are deaf, blind or just unable to come to grips with reality. Martinez and Rafa in the same dugout? Come on mate, wake up and smell the coffee. Add to that a director of football working above both of them. Don't make me laugh please.

FSG will not bring Rafa back. Rafa is nothing but history. Time to realise this simple fact, stop living in your delusional dream world and move on.

OMG !! i never want to see him as a liverpool manager..how can some guys judge him as a good manager after some handful matches with wigan..he might be a failure in liverpool colours...AVB or brendon rodgers

Why does everyone get up in arms when some fans don't want certain managers, we will all support the club no matter what, that is what we do.
Do those other supporters feel that if the rest do not give their support to a manager then the team will play poor because of that? we as supporters owe our support to the club and it will get that support, it always has and always will (from true supporters) when we are at an all time low and with no manager following the worst season in 50 years and it looks like we are being linked to some of the best managers in the world and the future looks bright, some of you get upset at us others who do not want a manger who has done nothing but manager first division sides and JUST keep a club out of the relegation to manage us.
Is this so wrong i mean LVG, Rafa, De Boer, Capello and you guys expect us to be happy with Martinez, well FFS im not saying all of you are saying it but you know who you are, so piss off and let us like who we want, the truth of the matter is no matter who it is, if we do not improve we will all be upset. I would just like someone with a proven track record of being there done that and can do it again because he has the wining mentality for me LVG would have been the best and i hope this is all shit and he will come and manage our great club.

Formerly B/W said...

Hey Jamie d  how about you piss off, who the hell do you think you are telling people to support someone else, last time i checked LFC was owned by FSG are you a partner, oh let me guess your a season ticket holder that must give you the right.
Well here is a lesson for you mate without the WORLD WIDE FAN BASE all of the EPL sides would be nothing, they would be local football just like a kick in the park.
So heres what i suggest why don't you stop telling people to support someone else or you go out and buy all of the LFC merchandise in the world that helps keep the club in the top flight.

Here here, i was thinking exactly the Shanks, Paisley, Dalglish first time round, Wenger, fook me even Moyes who came from Preston.

If Martinez is to be the manager then every Liverpool supporter should support him wholeheartedly.

You have fans wanting Rafa, AVB, LVG, Capello, Hiddink, Rodgers and so on and so on.
So someone is always going to be upset at who becomes the manager.
Well this fan will support whoever we get, and if that's Martinez, then i am happy for him to come here, his teams play attractive attacking football, passing the ball on the ground. Which is more than we have done for a season.

Lets lay of the negativity and get behind whoever is the new manager.

Well Whelan has lied. Liverpool denied offering Martinez the job...

ROBERTO MARTINEZ has not been made an offer by Liverpool owners
Fenway Sports Group to become their new manager, despite reports
yesterday.

The Wigan boss interrupted a family holiday to meet with principal
owner John Henry in Miami on Thursday to discuss succeeding the sacked
Kenny Dalglish.

Motormouth Wigan chairman Dave Whelan yesterday claimed the Spaniard was now mulling over a proposal from the Anfield outfit.

But that is not the case, with FSG instead outlining to Martinez
their long-term vision and the new management structure they intend to
have in place.

While Liverpool’s American owners will interview several other
candidates before making a final decision, Martinez remains the
front-runner for the post and is expected to meet again with FSG in the
coming days.

The Americans are likely to ask both Jurgen Klopp and Brendan
Rodgers to reaffirm their intention not to hold talks with Liverpool,
although interest in Andre Villas-Boas has seemingly cooled.

Michael Laudrup, who resigned as Mallorca manager early last season, may also be approached.

Whelan, who has given Martinez a deadline of June 5 to decide his
future, reiterated his belief the 38-year-old would not be happy working
under a sporting director unless he was promised complete control of
football activities.

“I think what he has said is ‘Thank you for your offer but I only
work under the following rules: I have to have complete control of
football’,” claimed the Wigan chairman.

“I think they’re considering his request and Roberto’s considering their offer and they’re going to talk again on Tuesday.”

Reports that Martinez was also meeting with Aston Villa owner Randy Lerner are wide of the mark.

Martinez is a gamble but if it works then this could be the beginning of something great. He is loyal and if he gets the fans onside with results and style early on his youth and energy with the fans backing could carry us a long way.

Brendan Rodgers will be manager so it doesn't really matter anyway!
And for all of those fans who don't agree with the appointment they will have to support or go away. I don't think we have many more chances before we become a joke otherwise!
As long as we play attacking football and are consistent to our best level we can be proud because at the end of the day the likes of Chelsea and ManC will go and spend double what we do anyway ...that's football nowadays unfortunately!

our complex is we dont try and win the league any more. until we start aiming higher were all fecked

agree we have to get positive. whoever comes in gets a pretty good squad. carra should be made assistant cos the new manager shouldnt have to drop him fom the squad people will use it against him even tough we all know carra hurts the team now. we really need to bring in the right players and really hope the new guy makes the right moves. we're not that far off being a really good side

Wigan with Martinez in last three seasons

09/10...bought 12m...sold...22m
10/11...bought 3m.....sold...1m
11/12...bought 5m...sold 9.5m

Total........bought 20m.....sold....32.5m hence reflecting relegation fights

Dalglish.....just Carroll 35m never mind anyone else

give Martinez the chance....he is better than KD...rodgers all day long...including oneil and Lambert

Given the backing of millions he will buy good talent from around the world who will take us back where we belong and will not come outwith pathetic excuse like KD

So your saying that because Roy did't have support thats why he failed, so if Martinez has the support he will succeed, what ever happened to he just wasn't good enough, i mean have a look at his England squad Downing is there want warranted that call up?

Roberto Martinez will surely save LFC from relegating. I wonder if he is the right choice for LFC. But like they say here in US "what goes around, comes around." May he be hired as a coach and hopefully, soon enough LFC fans will realize LFC is run by the wrong owners.

Supporters are living in the past if
they think Martínez is too
“small-time” to succeed Dalglish.

But what exactly have their club done in recent years to
expect a superstar managerial appointment?

The last Champions League success was back in 2005, and there have
been no league titles for over 20
years ago.

The appointment of Dalglish was a last desperate bid to bring back the
glorious past, but instead it brought only over £70m of poor transfers, eighth
place in the Premier League and a Carling Cup.

So maybe it’s time to approach things a different way. Martínez may not have
the CV, but he has worked wonders with a Wigan side annually plundered for their
best players. Not only has he kept Wigan in the Premier League for three
successive seasons against all the odds, he has done it playing an attractive,
free-flowing brand of football.

Martínez has potential and needs a bigger stage in order to prove it.

Considering the state of the club, I think Martinez has the potential to be a good fit for the club at the moment. I mean that in a good way, i.e., it needs rebuilding the squad and the club probably can't afford to splash big, so it needs to do it modestly and patiently.

I like RM however i liked Rafa and KD. Rafa & KD where both sacked for failing to achieve 4th in the league. On that note I do hope RM does get 4th spot other wise he will be gone, it is as simple as that. I will back him all the way from day 1 and i hope he is the next shankly because he will have to be. The following problems he will have to overcome this year;

1. entice world class players to liverpool and make them belive that his way is better than man city, utd, arsenal, tottenham and chelseas.
2. In his first year achieve 4th spot, otherwise have the pro rafa and KD mob rear ther head.
3. play quaility football.
4. basically be a better manager than ferguson, wenger, (whoever chelsea get), mancini, redknapp, moyes, pardew as that is what is takes to win the league if his long term plan is to work.
5. keep the players already at the club.
get all fans onside by achieving the above.

If RM achieves all of the above, then my god he will be awsome and be hailed as the the best thing since shankly. In my heart i hope he does it, but in my head, i belive this is a job to big at the wrong time, but i do hope i am wrong for liverpool sake!

its not what hes saying its he fact it has nothing to do with him. its amazing how liverpool have become a club who everyone in the media and alot of our own fans seem to want us to fail whats happening fsg have pumped millions in hired kenny(cos they had to) to steady the ship and now are looking to a younger well respected coach to move forward. something the fans seem reluctant to do

So finally...who got real? The funny part is that this blog states to be the one which looks at Liverpool FC's strories from a critical angle, but the more I read the articles in this website, it is just another gossip spreading site. The author seem to be searching for the snippets of the Liverpool team from every source possible, quoting it here and then starting a debate instead of any thought provoking and critically looking article as the home page suggests.
