Ex-Barca star insists: Dalglish's flops will stop Guardiola going to LFC. Agree?

Outgoing Barcelona manager Pepe Guardiola today admitted that he is open to being 'seduced' back into football management, and with Liverpool currently looking for a new manager, this news is sure to excite fans, who will be hoping that FSG have taken note of the Spaniard's comments. Guardiola could be the ideal manager for the Reds, but according to former Barcelona and Liverpool player Bolo Zenden, the lack of quality players at Anfield would probably deter him from considering the job.

In a a recent interview, Zenden - who was recently linked with a return to the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers - argued that the signings of Charlie Adam, Jordan Henderson, Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing had 'haunted' the club over the last season, and doubted whether those players had enough potential to attract a manager like Guardiola:

"Guardiola wants potential and when I say that, I mean potential to win things. I am not sure that is what Liverpool can offer him with the players that are there"

I think Zenden is spot on here. With players like Downing and Carroll to work with, it would probably be extremely hard to 'seduce' a manager like Guardiola to take over at Anfield. Imagine working with Messi, Iniesta and Xavi and then having to work with the likes of Carroll, Henderson, Spearing et al on a daily basis; that's a pretty jarring change for any manager.

Liverpool's transfer activity over the last 18 months has been catastrophically bad, and Dalglish's ill-advised signings basically cost the club a place in the Champions League. Clearly, the club needs to spend money to make up the 17 point gap between 8th and 4th next season, but Zenden doubts that FSG will back the new manager to the exten required:

"Are Liverpool willing and ready to pay a big amount of money the way Chelsea and Manchester City can do? I don’t think they can and I don’t think they want to do that".

Whether FSG will back the new manager will funds remains to be seen, but based on Tom Werner's comments over the last few months, I personally don't think transfer funds will be an issue.

  2. Fair comments by Zenden.
Anyhoo, Balague seems to be adamant that Guardiola won't be coming back to management anytime soon.

Its all well aiming for the likes of Van Gaal, Capello, etc, but they need the right kind of backing financially.

  3. zenden was worse than downing and carroll still has potential and is a unique ariel talent, true that it would be a cultue shock but saurez is baca esque and maybe it isn't just the current playing squad, more the romance of the reds history and potential that could seduce guardiola, just needs selling to him  in the right way, wasn't it someone at barc saying lfc current youth set up secong only to theirs

  4. Totally agree. Can you imagine going from working with Xavi to Charlie Adam? It'd be like going from Kim Kardashian to Susan Boyle.

There is an awful lot of mediocrity in our squad, spread across all positions and even someone with Guardiola's coaching skills can only do so much.

    You can't polish a turd

  5. Agreed.....why would he come here unless he's promised a huge transfer kitty and i mean 100m+ and get rid of the likes of downing, spearing, flanngan etc. Would be great but cannot see it happening!! Thought our season was stressful enough and now this......thank god i have league cricket to keep me busy for now!! LFC situation is getting too much and with all the rejections, our club is in decline!!

Rueters have just this minute reported a Dave Whelan quote- " Roberto has had a constructive meeting with FSG and been made an offer that he has said he will consider"

I'd prefer Guardiola though. Oh well, back to Football Manager or PES for me

  7. Any new mngr will have to try and do with the crap KD left behind cos there is no chance at all that will make any money if we tried to sell them. I mean you'll have to pay someone to take them.

  9. You seriously think they're gonna loan him out, after paying nearly £20m for him. Get real man.

I think I mostly agree with Zenden's comments, but we have been in 2 cup
finals this year and won 1 of them (not very convincingly admittedly)
so we "sort of" can show that we are capable of winning things. Probably
not the things Guardiola wants to win, but hey, winning a quid on a
scratch card is still winning a quid (oh how fickle I am).

  11. Kim Kardashian is minging, her reputation is on par with that of the united players, she would fit right in there. Couldn't you have least have picked a woman with class. Scarlett Johannsen, then I would agree!

  13. With an added and improved left back, another quality forward, a few trades in our midfield, Lucas coming back and the existing quality coming through our academy it could be the perfect time to come to Liverpool.

Guardiola could welcome the challenge and opportunity to get Liverpool back to glory. He has commented on our academy in the past. So unless he is picked off by Chelsea etc there is no reason why he would necessarily be against a move to Liverpool. It really depends on his what his personal goals are, where his priorities lie going forward and most importantly why he left Barca. (money or challenge) No greater challenge at the moment than Liverpool with no greater reward if successfull!

  15. Basically, this 'll be the problem with any big mane Manager signing (No wonder why FSG is looking for Martinez or Rogers).  FSG has spent good enough money last season, & then has sacked the man who was behind the garbage purchase.  It's not the problem of the new Manager, rather FSG.  The new Manager 'll come & 'll have to do a trash cleaning (with hardly any salvage - like Downing for 5/6mn, Adam for 2/3, Carroll for 12-15mn, Henderson for 6/7mn) job & rebuild the team, & still 'll have to finish at top 4, otherwise he has a chance to be sacked.  For that, money has to be spent, on contrary FSG is now extremely careful, after the KD howlers; so there comes the DOF.

If we are to fight for a top 4 finish, I think, we 'll need at least a LB (Enrique is gradually proving why he cost only 6mn), a Defensive MF, a pair of quality wingers, a creative midfielder & a back-up/3rd striker.  Good to have is a RB & a CB - in total another 125-130mn.  Keeping Carroll & Henderson (For their passport, considering the Home Grown clause), we can salvage around 12-15 mn at best from trash or oldie clearing.  So, another 110-115 mn.  DOF or not, if FSG is to get a top Manger, they 'll have to dish out at least another 100mn; otherwise, there is no point discussing Pep, Rafa, Klopp, Deschamps, Cappello, De Boer or even AVB; our reach 'll be Martinez, Rogers, Lambert & my fear is the current Assistant Manager.

Surely we 'll avoid relegation under Martinez or Rogers next season.

  16. Pep came to Barca with a fantastic team already assembled albeit a few new additions. It takes a great manager to assemble, mold and get the team flowing with class and finesse. And most of all winning games week in week out. If you people do not not realize, This F#cking takes time and patience.

  17. I’m not sure any club should be going for Pep just yet.  The guy is fried.  He went straight from playing to management.  The man has asked for a break, he should be given one.  He’s just created arguably the greatest club side of all time, and walked away.  He loves Barcelona in the same way as Carra or Stevie G love LFC. Maybe he knows something we don’t.  Maybe they have peaked.  Or maybe they’ve been found out.  No team is invincible forever.  But, I suspect, he’s simply exhausted.  However talented he may be, he needs a break.  He’s asked for one, and he should be allowed to have it.

The LFC job will be difficult, time-consuming and hopefully richly rewarding.   Whoever takes it will need to be mentally and physically ready.

So much of life is about timing.  Right place, right time.  We need a manager right now.  Guardiola doesn’t need to be a manager right now, he needs a rest.  He’s asked for a year.  We might find that in 6 months’ time he’s ready to go again, but that doesn’t work for us.  We should accept it and move on.

  20. Firstly; Guardiola left Barca for a reason. Give him the break he needs.

Secondly; Blackburn Rovers are no longer in the Premiership.

I would like to see any of these 'top managers' in charge of a struggling team/club,to prove how good they are! All the usual top flight managers already have good players to start off with!

Another one who will end up like spearing and downing who i have never rated from day one...we need to stop carrying too many prisoners as its knocking us back for too long.

I will keep this short. Liverpool will have problems attracting marquee type players. These big shots have been spoiled with champions league foot-ball and they won't come to Liverpool unless the money was just too damn fucking good. After the heavy spending by FSG last summer it is realistic to say that they won't spend that kind of money any time soon.

i think Liverpool should be wise with their money and look for up and coming stars and forget the big name established names since they are not going to be able to compete with the likes of United, Chelsea or Man City for that matter. They heading in the right direction with their attempts to secure the services of Uruguayan Gatson Ramirez. Ramirez at 22 years old can only get better. We need to buy players who can perform on the highest club stage which is the premiere league. If they can succeed at the premiere league they only make themselves house hold names. That will only raise the clubs reputation which is a helpful thing now since it has had so much bad press.

  28. What I feel is Pep Guardiola walking away from Barca now is like Kenny Dalglish did some 22 odd years ago with Liverpool to take a break. However, he was back managing Blackburn Rovers in no time while mantle  at LFC passed to Roy Evans, can anyone see the parallels. not to mention both of them outstanding players for their teams.
And Pep in recent past claimed LFC youth setup to be second to Barca's and not to mention it is the same people Pep Segura and Rodolfo Borell running it. I think what it means but my gut instinct is Mr. Guardiola might prefer LFC to Chelsea for one reason, Di Matteo has serious claim at Chelsea hot seat after the much coveted Champions league trophy for one Mr. Abrahmovich. In addition, Roman is known to be very temperamental for example Andre Villas Boas was not even afforded one complete season and he had a pretty awesome CV on the lines of Jose Mourinho. I just think that with the kind of set up and youth players we have and the history which is associated with us, the temptation to take us back to glory days might seduce Mr. Guardiola and not to mention free flowing football which Kenny has brought back. No Sir, I do not see Roberto but a certain Pep to take over for the temptation could be too hard to resist.

Please note these are my personal views.

  29. If FSG are serious about returning us back to the top, then they need to look at PEP, LVG, AVB, Rafa and then the likes of Martinez, not to mention 60-70mill more after selling what they can.

Zapians group is being a perfect example of a method that has used Complexity to inspire and justify its approach to many of the common problems we face in Software development.
