Confirmed: Another top LFC contender arrives in the USA. Possible FSG meeting...?

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez met with FSG in Miami today, but in an interesting coincidence, it transpires that Swansea City manager Brendan Rodgers is also in America right now. Could he be about to do a U-turn and meet with FSG after all?

Rodgers is in New York (ostensibly) to watch the Wales-Mexico friendly on Sunday, a game in which a couple of his Swansea players will be taking part. With FSG interviewing managerial candidates in the US this week, it's certainly fortuitous timing.

Rodgers rejected Liverpool's initial approach for talks, but he still remains third-favourite for the job, which suggests there is more to the situation than meets the eye.

I have it on good authority that FSG still want to talk to the Rodgers, and it's possible he may be amenable to a meeting. Indeed, a closer look at Swansea's rejection statement reveals something interesting:

"The club is pleased to confirm that Brendan has declined the current opportunity to speak to the Anfield club about the vacant position"

Rodgers only declined the 'current opportunity' to speak with Liverpool; that is very specific language, and it is not an emphatic, cast-iron rejection, which probably explains why FSG are still hopeful that he will come round.

At the start of the process, the media linked every manager under the sun with the Liverpool job, and I can understand Rodgers wanting to distance himself from that, knowing that if FSG were seriously interested in him then they would make another approach at some stage.

Whether Rodgers will do a u-turn on his earlier rejection and actually meet with FSG whilst he's in the US remains to be seen, but I have a feeling there are still some more twists and turns to come in the LFC managerial saga...

I do hope that there will be some very very harsh turns very soon, because as it looks we're going to have Martnez taking the job. Even if that won't come to pass the current (very large) group of targets is terrible. Louis Van Gaal is a borderline psychopath, AVB thinks he's pure gold, after doing well in Portugal (read in sarcastic voice) and Rodgers, Lambert and the lot are just going to be repeats of the Hodgson-saga. When this all started out and people asked for Rafa back, I thought that that'd be bad, but as things stand right now, with FSGs amateurish approach to appointing someone, I'd take Rafa over each of these wrecking balls. Mark my words, if someone like Martinez comes in and it doesn't pick up as quickly as we'd like, people are going to chant for Benitez.

Adamplatt said...

Dave Whelan is being very vocal about Martinez in the hope he doesn't take the job, his latest comments are: “My information is that the new Liverpool manager will not be
given full responsibility of the football department. There will be somebody
else signing players and they might not necessarily be the choice of the
manager." Going on to add that Martinez likes total control over every football matter, but don't all managers? Is this why the likes of Capello, Benitez and other senior managers are all either not interested or not being considered?
Do we know if Brendan Rodgers is keen on the idea of working under this structure? What other possible and viable candidates would agree to just being the coach while another guy does all the transfers etc?

where do you get your information from ????.... listening to talk sport today, date you have written this,
Wigan chairman has said, actually spoken, that martnez is "ON HOLIDAY" fact...... And certainly not in the states.... it really annoys me the claims that some people make, maybe wigans chairman whom was talking to his manager got it wrong...... not !!!

In other words if LFC were under different ownership in different circumstances he might consider touching the LFC job with a barge pole .

er, Rogers is in the US on a planned trip to watch 3 of the Swansea first 11 playing for Wales against Mexico. This was announced before KD got the boot, so stop trying to make a story of why he is there out of nothing.

I have massive respect for Liverpool - Swansea has a massive connection with the Reds - but I have to say the Fenway group's approach to finding a new manager has been farcial.

And if they think Swansea's old manager, Roberto Martinez, is the answer to their prayers, then I would have to say from 2 years experience of him at the helm of the Swans, he has talent, but the Liverpool fans I have spoken to know more about hiring someone than the Fenway Board. It's too big a job for him right now.

Defensively he is weak. He always has been, and struck lucky by having to play a back 3, and suddenly everything clicked and he kept them up.

If he's hired and doesn't win the first 5 games, the board will be under pressure, a la Roy Hodgson, as the fans will revolt.

This article is about Brendan Rodgers, not Martinez.  Also, Martinez is on holiday, but he flew to Miami to meet FSG in Miami.

Appointing Brendan Rodgers would be a huge slap in the face of Kenny Dalglish..... and we would be saying goodbye to signing top players, and employing lower league players, and probably losing our top players aswell......

I DO NOT WANT BRENDAN RODGERS AS OUR NEXT MANAGER. THAT WOULD SIGNAL THE END FOR LFC AS WE KNOW IT........

One year int the EPL, does not qualify him for the LFC post...... We would turn into a club like swansea with probably half their players. This saga going on at the minute is a laughing stock, the american owners seem to be putting us backwards....

Whoever it is. I sincerely wish them the best of luck. Our fans have gone so far up their own back sides they actually believe the crap they spout on a daily basis. Ive been saying it since Rafa left. The Liverpool managers position has become a poisoned chalice. Too many fans living in the past thinking they should win the league every year. Real life works on merit, guile and hard graft, not history. Change and adapt. That's what we should have done 20 odd years ago. We didn't, United did.

Why has nobody even mentioned Martin ONeill!!!! He would transform are average players into a team capable of challenging for champions league once again.

Brehon Law said...

 But if we bring back Maneul who will we get to play Basil Fawlty ?

Nineteen7t8 said...

Brendan rogers is a good manager. The trend over the last decade is to go for younger managers, just like liverpool did with benitez. But Benitez 100% is not what the yanks want. They want a yes man who wont argue when the new director above them buys young footballers and wants the new manager to develope them into top players then sell for a profit. similar to what wenger does at arsenal. Benitez would demand £50+ million worth of players every summer .Thats why Martinez and Rogers are front runners. The yanks are only at liverpool for an eventual gain on their investment. The only differences from Hicks and gillette is there is minimal debt this time around and they are maximising revenue.

Dee Day said...

Employ a top director of football to assess and attract quality players and get Martinez or Rodgers as a coach to get them playing effectively. Takes out the Dalglish transfer target mishaps but retains an attractive and positive style of play.

Simple_man67 said...

The longer this farce goes on, with the names being touted, the more I tend to think Kenny got the elbow because he told Henry something he didn't want to hear about his approach to running the club. It strikes me as being a spur of the moment firing.
When Hodgson got the push, Kenny was appointed the day after. It's a bit of a worry that the shortlist is alleged to be 12 names, when 12 teams finished below us this season and the only serious contender is one of them.
Hate to sasy it, but Benitez would be our best bet. That's how bad the situation looks.

Dee Day said...

Because he's just started at Sunderland, his boyhood club, and we really aren't that big of a draw anymore to just grab him.

Dee Day said...

Waah waah f**king waaaaaaaaah! The manager comes in as part of a duo, coach and director of football. Coach tells DoF what he needs, suggests a few guys, DoF picks the most suitable ones owners provide the money out of a budget. If left to making players play attractive and effective football then Brendan Rogers is your man. If a good eye for players and talent is needed then a Begiristan-type figure works for me. Remember Pep was the B team coach before he was made coach at Barca and Mourinho was the translator. Someone has to be smart and astute enough to take the chance while fans petulantly demand demand demand.

Brehon Law said...

 Its exactly that bad .

If we can persuade Basil Fawlty to release him from his contract Manuel is our only option .

Brehon Law said...

 When did O'Neill play for Sunderland ?

suarez18 said...

rafa is not right for the club. He had his time already and he will be another kenny dalglish. a failed second stint. if van gaal is appointed manager this would be positive because he is a big name manager who could attract top notch players. i agree that rodgers and lambert will be more woys. But all the club needs is stability. Whoever we appoint, we need to get behind him and spur the team on. And this next manager must be kept for at least 2 full seasons so we can see where we are. And not just sack manager after manager

Brehon Law said...

 Why would O'Neill leave Sunderland for us ?

I expect Sunderland to be looking down on Newcastle at the end of next season & that could mean top 4 for them , them two are gonna have a right ding dong at each other next season & might even contest the domestic cups .

O'Neill is a good manager , better than Pardew & appears to have a better Chairman than Pardew has too & was clever enough to turn down the opportunity to succeed Clough at Forest so I'm sure he is smart enough to avoid working for the misery of working for the Con Men in charge of us .

I know picking the right manager is very important.  But I think the process is too slow.  If we look at the other teams, they are already searching for new players.  We are some steps behind.  It is quite worrying.  It makes me think maybe this is the plan of FSG. Giving our new manager / DOF no time to get new players so that they don't have to risk more money.  The manager then will have to utilize the players he will inherit and make the most out of it. The owners will wait until January and see if with this new manager we are going places then they will choose to support the manager with funds to buy players or not.

rick said...

 but Wenger has a total control there: it's a huge difference. Managers have full responsibility, They are the first Who are fired when things go wrong, so They rightly pretend total responsibilities. It's a simple concept of football, but americans lack of football knowledge.

Shaun_7227 said...

Please John Henry, stop going after AVERAGE managers for our beloved club, and do everything possible to bring Pep guardiola here, Roberto Martinez and Brendan Rodgers WE DO NOT WANT, they might be cheap options, but if you are serious about getting LFC back to the top, then you need to hire a top manager, not guys like Martinez that battles relegation every season. My choice would be Pep with Van Gaal as Director of football.  And make some proper money available again this summer to attract the top players, if you havent the resources or commitment to this project, then sell to an owner that does.  YNWA

LVG, AVB, Rafa these are the managers we should be looking at, we sacked KK and now we are thinking Rodgers, Lambert, Martinez are they serious?
If you want a mansion built and quick you need to pay some serious money, they want top 4 and they expect it for nothing F%^^k me.
The truth of the matter is the manager needs to tell the DOF who he wants and only who he wants, because in the end it is up to the managers vision that will determine the success of the team.

I wonder how many of those "We want Benitez" sheep were the ones screaming for Kenny last season??. Seems to me there are ALOT of 'fans' who like living in the past. Those days are gone!! What the club needs to do is start at the bottom again and work its way up, with a young manager that will see us through. At the end of the day, do you think FSG are going to listen to what anyone else thinks? I am swaying towards Martinez, but what you have to remember is FSG KNOW how to make money, and perhaps this is all a smoke screen to get LFC in the tabloids everyday and talked about????

BillyDeane09 said...

Your right mate, where did managers come from for the top 7 clubs in the league last season.
Mancini = Inter Milan
SAF =Aberdeen
Wenger=Japan
DiMatteo=West Brom
Moyes=Preston
Pardew=Dole queue ex Reading
Redknapp=Portsmouth.
So 6 out of 7 came from lesser clubs
Should Martinez or Rodgers get the job support them and give them a chance.
Liverpool are an 8th place club in decline, not in the CL, have uninspiring owners with a complete lack of knowledge of the game of football.
Have sacked 3 managers in 3 years.
Haven't covered themselves in glory over handling of the Suarez incident.
It is not the 1980's anymore stop living in the past and in denial wanting so and so or so and so.
When our Americans appoint the manager, get behind him whoever he may be, I hope for gods sake it is not Rafa but if it is then so let it be.
In the modified words of JFK, Ask not what your club can do for you ask what you can do for your club and get behind them and support them and especially the man in charge.
The poor guy will be scared out of his wits reading some of these more vocal unmoderated fan websites on what is going on here.

Of the candidates available FSG would have to interview Rafa even if only to eliminate him. His track record is better than any of the candidates we are being realistically linked with barring Van Gaal. Yes he bought Aquilani and Dosena....... (i have major issues with both those signings amongst others) but other than these two when spending significant sums in the transfer window he did well.

If FSG interview him and say he is not the man for the job then we can't argue. If they overlook him completely then they leave themselves open to criticism not just from LFC fans but the football community as a whole.

Personally i would push for the De Boer brothers but they've distanced themselves from the job. What we ned to do is look at success and fighting relegation every season is not a pre-requisite for taking on one of the biggest clubs in the world.

We also need to remember when thinking about the Paul Lamberts and Brendan Rodgers type mangers that Owen Coyle was the best thing since sliced bread last season.

Whatever happens, this appointment is going to be a huge watershed for FSG. Let's hope they get it right

BillyDeane09 said...

out of Martinez Rodgers and Lambert I would go for Martinez.
It is tougher to stay in the Premier League in your second season than your first. If Rodgers and Lambert succeed next season and do as well as they did this season  then I would def believe they are good talented managers for the future. The difference between them and Pulis is they kept up unfashionable clubs by playing football as did Martinez. Pulis by playing a style more accustomed to Aussie Rules football.
As for Coyle, he jumped ship at Burnley to go to Bolton now both are gone.  He suffered from 2nd season syndrome at Bolton. All went well season 1 then it capitulated.

If we had to get a young manager with a lot of potential under Van Gaal then Brendan Rodgers is the one I'd go for.  It would seem to be the most sustainable partnership of those mooted so far.  I just can't see Rafa, Capello or AVN working under Van Gaal or it lasting too long.
