Liverpool striker Luis Suarez served an 8-game ban last season after a much publicised altercation with Manchester United's Patrice Evra, but now, QPR thug Joey Barton has outdone Suarez and been hit with a 12 game ban for violent conduct. Who deserved their ban more: Suarez or Barton?
Luis Suarez
Reason for Ban: Using 'insulting words' that included a 'reference to Patrice Evra's colour'.
"Mr Suárez used insulting words towards Mr Evra during the match contrary to FA Rule E3(1); the insulting words used by Mr Suárez included a reference to Mr Evra's colour within the meaning of Rule E3(2);
Punishment: 40k fine and 8 game ban
Joey Barton
Reason for ban: Two counts of violent conduct in relation to the Queens Park Rangers game against Manchester City.
"An independent Regulatory Commission has today [Wednesday 23 May 2012] dealt with two charges of violent conduct against Joey Barton, arising from the game against Manchester City, resulting in an eight-match suspension and £75,000 fine for the Queens Park Rangers midfielder".
Punishment: 75k fine and 12 game ban
Given the fact Barton was punished more harshly, it could be argued that the FA deems violent conduct to be more severe than racial abuse. Of course, Suarez was neither accused or convicted of racism, but reading between the lines of the FA's phrasing ('insulting words that included a reference to colour'), it's clear that Suarez was banned for what the FA deem to be a form of racial abuse.
Who was treated harsher: Suarez or Barton? Did the QPR midfielder deserve a bigger ban than Suarez?
Jaimie Kanwar

Patrice Evra deserved a long ban.
ReplyDeleteMight I venture to suggest that this being a Liverpool site, one might get a slightly favourable outcome for the Liverpool player.
ReplyDeleteI think the fact that there are two separate counts for Barton is crucial here. Had he just hit Tevez it would have been 6 games (presumably).
ReplyDeleteSuarez was guilty of ...
ReplyDelete1: Not being English .
2: Being New to English Culture .
3: Expressing himself in the Workplace .
I'm surprised he wasnt deported .
O come on Jamie in the middle of all this it has been missed that Barton has got off lightly. Look at the facts everytime you are sent off after your 1st sending off you recieve an extra game, so if you're sent off a 2nd time it's 4 games for violent conduct or 2 games, a 3rd time it's 5 for violent conduct or 3. Let's look at Barton, he had already been sent off this season so the initial red for elbowing Tevez carries an automatic 4 games, the assault on Aguerro should carry 5 (clear Red card) and the headbutt (although it missed is also a Red card) should have seen a 6 game ban. Add all this together and you have a 15 game ban, his tweets about trying to get one of the City players sent off should also have been punished. So while idiots like Danny Mills defend him Barton should be grateful it was only 12 games. I find it staggering you compare Luis Suarez, wrong though he may have been to a serial thug like Barton, but no doubt you'll try to chase Suarez out of Anfield
ReplyDeleteLet's not forget Suarez was not charged with
ReplyDeleteRacism to start with you can't make up charges jaimie,
It was for insulting language end of, Barton however
Kicked out a aguero also threw is elbow out at Tevez
And went to headbutt kompany, so the useless
Twat can find himself lucky it was only twelve games
And so therefore his ban was rightly higher than
Suarez's.
Surely actual body harm deserves more then alleged racism right? I'm asian and tbh I'd rather someone called me something cos they not familiar with culture then get punched and kicked (btw I think it was right to ban suarez and not being biased bout it) but yeah think Barton deserves 12 games cos I personally think hitting people is worse imo
ReplyDeletePhysical abuse is obviously worse than verbal abuse.
ReplyDeleteNot in the "Modern World" that is muilti cultural "Backward Britain" it isnt .
ReplyDeleteOoops !
I got that a wee bit arse over tit , allow me to correct myself ....
Not in the "Regressive Dark Age" that is the Multi Cultural Impoverished Slave Society that is "Modern Britain" it isnt !
Double Oooops !!!
Naw just forget it , I'm indigenous ....GET ME OUTA HERE !!!
and all his previous troubles means he hasn't learnt a lot
ReplyDeletethis should put J Terry out for the whole season!
ReplyDeleteI think your article should have addressed Joey Burton as an individual! With all his stupidity, I think involving Suarez is just unfair on him, Joey is twat, does not deserve to be playing professional football with a huge wage. Now JK you could have investigated what options QPR have in dumping him, as I fear that he has broken the terms of employment by his actions, even the PFA is not on-board with him this time..because the idiot should have been charged with 5 issues including failure to leave the pitch, and being a twat on twitter, surely he should have gone to school first instead of putting up someone's quotes on twitter as pretence to being a know-it-all. Joey is a disgrace and shall always be one.
ReplyDeleteBut Terry isnt from Liverpool & has no connection with LFC , so he will probably end up suing the police for malicious prosecution & getting a hefty out of Court Settlement as justice demands .
ReplyDeleteC'est la vie .
A Liverpool site? LOL!!! You obviously haven't spent much time here.
ReplyDeleteGood thread I was thinking about the comparisons myself. I'd definately say Barton "sticks and stones and all that. Also there was a lot unproven and guess work with the Suarez incedent.
ReplyDeleteI think Joey Barton got 8 match ban and NOT 12 for the incident . The other four was for his straight red card .
ReplyDeleteJJamie I reckon you should go out and assault 2 people then verbally abuse another and see which offense the judge imposes the heaviest sentance. After you get out of jail, you will understand which offense is worse and wont have these pointless polls. Just a thought dont do it but in case you're curious I reckon the assault charge is worse.
ReplyDeleteArticle is fine but what is the point of this poll ...do you think liverpool fan will vote against suarez ..how many non-liverpool fan visit this site often?
ReplyDeleteI don't even know why we are having this conversation Jaime. Everybody who knows that he is nothing but trouble.
ReplyDeleteI think he is a poor example of a captain. It is a poor reflection on Mark Hughes that he has allowed him to keep the armband. I think the F.A was too lenient on him. I think a 20 match ban would have been even more appropriate. No player has been punished more by the FA over the years than Joey Barton. Does anyone remember that famous incident some years back when Barton pulled his shorts down as he was being sent off to expose his buttocks to the camera while playing for Manchester city? He missed a lot of games after that. Then he got into a physical altercation with his then team mate Sylvain Distin that saw him apply for a transfer to Everton.
I believe it is a slow day at my job which is why I can devote so much of my time to this. I think simply that the fact Barton has played so long in the PL the powers that be in the FA are well aware of him, and because of this long association with him. Any new punishment administered to Mr Barton should be longer and more severe than the last one.
In comparison to Suarez's 8 game ban Barton's 12 game ban is no where severe enough for his crime. While Racism is a big deal , and as a person of color I take it very seriously and I have openly attacked Suarez (a member of the team I support) in my previous postings for his actions. I believe Suarez got his appropriate punishment , while Barton's long disciplinary history should mean that today he is a smarter and wiser individual or that he is not being punished severely enough for his indiscretions.
In response to your point I believe that Barton's physical attack warrants a harsher treatment than Suarez' racial attack on Evra. The following statement is familiar to many of us "sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me." Words can hurt but not as much as a punch to the face.
Violence is worse than verbal abuse. You can walk away from abuse but violence can put you in hospital. Barton got off lightly particularly the assault on Aguerro. He should of got 9 months like Cantona. He has a history of it the assualt outside McDonalds in Paradise Street, stubbing out the cigar in the City trainees face, assaulting a 16yo Everton fan in a Bangkok hotel.
ReplyDeleteHe has the audacity to then twitter at world class players like Shearer and Lineker calling them childish names like a 7 year old in the playground.
The man makes El Hadj Djouf seem like Mother Teresa.
What grieves me is the snivelling rat may get sacked and paid off, 90k a week with 4 years to go =14m so a figure of 10m is being banded about to pay him off.
Then you think of old pro's like Tommy Smith selling his medals to live, a proper football hard man.
Lock the rat up and throw away the key
if we cant deport Abu Qatada we wouldnt be able to deport him either.
ReplyDeleteYou need to get over yerself .
ReplyDeleteBarton done nothing to warrent the severity of action you are attempting to condone & Suarez done nothing more than react to provocation .
Barton broke nobody’s bones or drew anyone’s blood , you are attempting to hold him up as some kinda example for "Multi Cultural Backward Britain" to punish & re-punish to ease your own paranoid delusions .
Its reverse discrimination & an example how the Corrupt FA has allowed the sport to become overly politicized and a vehicle for deceitful slave driving politicians to implement oppressive policy’s upon the common man .
Its a sport .
Its nothing more , its a sport & Barton participated in it .
So wind yer neck in before you provoke an Anders Berhing Breivick & the nukes start flying in your direction .
They should chop off his feet & then throw them into a fire as an offering to the God Of Multi Culturalism , Unga Bunga !
ReplyDeleteI was joking , I actually think we shoulda cut off his lips & sacrificed them to the God of Slavery , Unga Bunga !
ReplyDelete"sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me" i could see barton seriously hurting or killing someone one day. i couldnt see suarez doing that. im sure that cigar must of hurt.
ReplyDeletesuarez should not of been banned, not without evra getting banned for abuse aswell.
barton is just scum with the biggest chip on his shoulder. one day he is going to be brought down to earth.
this site is shit suarez sarga is over but you stil bring it up get over it suarez will not afend again but barten will not a lfc site
ReplyDeleteArsenal fan in peace.
ReplyDeleteI think both players deserved their bans, to my mind neither of them behaved appropriately, and both dragged the game down with their actions.
It seems like the question being posed is almost "who is a bigger scumbag?".... only one answer to that, its Mr. Barton by a mile.
Suarez behaved like an idiot from the very beginning of the racist language saga, but Barton has repeated his poor behaviour over and over again.
Much as I condemn Suarez for his awful behaviour, I feel he deserves a chance to learn from his mistake and repay the Liverpool fans for their support.
p.s. Martinez in talks with Pool? Risky, but might just pay off. Best of luck with him, if he gets the job.
Unga Bunga !.. Me LFC ... You AFC ... ME Suarez Bad ... You Barton Bad ... UNGA BUNGA !!!
ReplyDeleteWho cares. Its been and gone. Should let it lie.
ReplyDeleteAhahaha !!!
ReplyDeleteJamie !!!
You sacrificed my UNGA BUNGA welcome to tha God of Censorship !!!
UNGA BLOODY BUNGA !!!
The God of Paranoia Demands that they be punished , re-punished & punished some more ...In the name of Unga Bunga I say ...
ReplyDeleteUNGA BUNGA !!!
no one will really know whether suarez actually abused evra. only suarez and evra know so its one mans word vs another. therefore you cant really say they were right to ban suarez.
ReplyDeletesuarez is a much classier man than evra is and evra is a disgrace to the premier league, just like terry, and barton.
No 3 is class lol, I'll give you that Brehon, very argumentive but very funny
ReplyDeleteTotally Agree Tony, and people would be wise to remember that, well said. Perhaps a Better comparison would have been D Ferguson V Joey Barton. One headbutt (which looked like a mere clash of heads from DC and HE got 3 Months Jail Sentence
ReplyDeletelol Brilliant, this site is Defo not for people with no sense of Humour
ReplyDeleteNothing funny about it , ever hear of the Bosman ruling ?
ReplyDeleteBosman was an actual player & is the reason there are free transfers .
Suarez was forced to respond to & defend himself from hostile aggression in the Workplace .
Evra admitted insulting Suarez's family .
Everybody has rights & everybody has rights in the workplace & theres a reason why they are called PROFESSIONALS ... its because it is their job .
Suarez has been treated horrendously while trying to ply his trade in England , Discrimination barely even begins the injustice he has had to endure .
Wars have been started over less .
If only .
ReplyDeleteThis site is a Killing Joke .
UNGA BUNGA !!!
yes and end up giving the judges wife a go seeing to !!!
ReplyDeleteABSOLUTELY SPOT ON, Billy, pass me those Tranquilizers and the jacket please, I'm off to Winwick to Join Brehon
ReplyDeletesorry i meant a good seein to
ReplyDeleteask the kid he beat up in town . or the young player he put acigar out in his eye .or the black teammate he beat up on the training ground.the man should be in walton with the rest of his family .scum !!!!
ReplyDeleteBarton was punished for anything & everything he done only sick perverts want to re-punish someone for what they have already atoned for !
ReplyDeleteA man is not his brothers keeper & by your own sword I am now free to attack you because I have a personal dislike for a member of your family ... UNGA BUNGA ! ,, isnt Backward Britain a Multicultural Paradise !!!
As for the "Kid" he beat up , wat "Kid" is on the streets of City Centre Liverpool at 3 AM ?
And I seen the footage of the supposed beating & I can tell you now it was nothing , one or two weak arm punches & I dont even think he landed with his knuckles !
Gerrard on the other hand absolutely knocked the shlt outa that guy in the bar in Southport & he done it like a talented amateur boxer .
Put it like this , I wouldnt want to confront Gerrard but I wouldnt think twice about confronting Barton & they are both brought up in Huyton ... a pretty grimy urban area if you know what I mean ?
He's an oldschool "Geezah" , no doubt about it !
ReplyDeleteBrehon you ruin some interesting points with English like "I seen and he done it" also why do you go under the name brehon law? Interesting that you pick an ancient law for a name but your English is chronically modern in the new age Chav style.
ReplyDeleteFair play tho u nearly dun gud kid
Unga Bunga !!!
ReplyDeleteThe God Of respect Demands you give me your bank account numbers & that I sacrifice the English Language in the name of Celtic Coolness !
Unga Bunga !!!
If you are to go along with the idea that Suarez is guilty, then he should have gotten a longer ban (or Barton should have gotten a shorter one). I suppose Barton's form counted against him.
ReplyDeleteHe's doing Scouser's reputations the world of good this eejit.
did any1 else notice how John Terry didnt get a ban? hahah fucking FA
ReplyDeleteA liverpool criticism site..... very critical of all aspects, including players, manager, owners, etc
ReplyDeleteas he showed by biting an opponent, celebrating wilding after cheating in the world cup quarter final and diving around like any mans busines...
ReplyDeletelol all these halfwits haven't even read the report and still defend Suarez
ReplyDeleteOn behalf of all the 'halfwits' on this site, I read the report and feel it my duty to defend Suarez.
ReplyDeleteHe called a black bloke a black bloke. Good job Chibuzo wasn't talking to him, or he'd have gone fncking spare if he had been called a "person of colour".
Nice name, btw. You should change it to ComedyGenius, maybe?
Is this a Liverpool site?
ReplyDeleteLoved the reaction of Jimmy Bullard when big Dunc slugged Paul Scharner in the stomach.
ReplyDeleteI remember going to a derby game one night and Paul Ince was kicking everyone off the park and standing up to anyone who confronted him. Big Dunc came off the bench scythed Ince down from behind, Incey got up quick, to attack the person who did it, saw it was Big Dunc, smiled shook his hand and patted his back.
lock Barton up with Duncan Ferguson am sure Big Dunc would knock the shite out of him good an proper.
ReplyDeleteJohn Terry should have got the longest ...but seeing as he is obviously immune to any form of punishment i would say def barton,Suarez was just a stitch up from day one.
ReplyDeleteHalfwit...How ironic with a name like kkk, braindead yokel prob can't even read and is asking one of us to read it to him.
ReplyDeleteExcept that it was not one man's word against another as Suarez admitted saying what he was accused of saying.
ReplyDeletedoubt whether a crown court judge has a wife, thought they wore suzzies under their kecks.
ReplyDeleteUNGA BUNGA !!!
ReplyDeleteDry yer eyes missus misery .
ReplyDeleteWhat is the point of such a discussion
ReplyDeleteYAWN.... Must be a slow news day Jamie. Really what was the point of dragging it all up again? I'm sure you've covered the whole Suarez thing/debacle from just about every angle other than an exclusive interview with him.
ReplyDeleteNah, there are about 5 other angles I haven't even touched yet :-)
ReplyDeleteMy conscience is clear anyway, J.........
ReplyDelete;)
you are a dickhead, and aptly named. dont forget you hood.
ReplyDeletewhy would you even bother with this tripe jamie, you must be the biggest wanker on the internet.
ReplyDeleteOnly ignorant people will ever ask this question. Violence is far worse than "insulting words". Also, they got the same ban (Barton got 4 matches for the red card), which is incredible to me. I do not condone racial abuse at all, but the FA really need to get a grip. Violence is worse than words.
ReplyDeleteSure, and he also grabbed his head, pinched his arm and pointed at his skin, all in a friendly way, of course. His friends contradicted him but the other guy, who is not fluent in spanish is, of course, a liar, pure and simple. I read the report too. Anyone seen a picture of the guy's black granddad yet? Never trust a bloke who starts saying 'my best mate is black', etc, etc,
ReplyDeletebut my granddad is, though.
That said, Suarez deserved what he got, Barton should be kicked out of the game. No bigger scumbag in football.
Depends on how many people hear the words, act on the words and how intelligent the mob is on any given day. Unfortunately, words can get a mob going at any time, as we've seen already this season. Then comes the violence.
ReplyDeleteYou idiot, Suarez doesn't have a sister. His family. The God of Slavery is laughing at you.
ReplyDeleteWars have been started over less. I don't think you know what you are talking about.
Some people will never learn.
ReplyDeleteYeah, you clearly aren't any good at much, because only people with no skills have your views.
ReplyDeleteThat would be you, wouldn't it?
ReplyDeleteYou wouldn't even know where to send the nukes, so what are you on about?
The common man? you certainly fit that description.
You dickhead! Where does it mention anything about Suarez's sister? Take your dick out of your mouth.
ReplyDelete
