31 goals in 23 games? Liverpool need to sign this great young striker NOW...

With Luis Suarez suspended, and Andy Carroll not scoring regularly, Liverpool are in the market for a 'fox in the box' type striker to (regularly) put away the multitude of chances created every game. Credible rumours (confirmed by Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson) suggest that Darren Bent is on his way to Anfield, and that's great news, but Liverpool should also (IMO) pull out all the stops to sign Huddersfield Town's Jordan Rhodes.

The 21 year old striker has 31 goals in 23 games this season, and last night, he banged in FIVE goals in Huddersfield's 6-0 win over Wycombe Wanderers.

The youngster is no flash-in-the-pan either; in the last three seasons, he's scored 72 goals and created 14 more, a record that has attracted the interest of many top Premier League clubs.

After the game last night, Huddersfield Manager Lee Clark, enthused:

"In terms of his finishing, I bracket him with Alan Shearer and Andy Cole, though obviously he hasn't achieved what they did at their level yet. Certainly when you put the ball in the box he's as good as anything.

"But the thing that pleases me most about Jordan is that his general play is sensational at the moment. He's not just scoring but bringing other people into play, holding the ball up and he's creating chances for other players and his movement is fantastic"

I really hope Liverpool are paying attention - Rhodes perfectly fits the club's new transfer policy under NESV, and he wouldn't cost the earth, either.

Liverpool have a history of plucking successful players from the lower leagues. Amongst others: Ian Rush came from Chester City; Alan Hansen arrived from Partick Thistle; John Aldridge signed from Oxford United, and Steve Nicol came from Ayr United. All went on to become Anfield legends.

I would love to see Rhodes at Liverpool.

Sign him, Kenny!

  2. Will do fine at a club like Villa some day

  3. Lol, why Villa? Why not us? A lot of our fans seem to think we're entitled to sign the likes of Messi, Villa et al. I think people need to face it, we're not in the same league as Barca and Real Madrid, or even Man United at the minute when it comes to being attractive for genuine world class players, if we can find players with a surname of Smith that hit the back I the net then great. And I know we got Suarez but lets face it he was at Ajax and was a gamble. Good spot Jaimie, if we bought him an he was like Robbie then I'd be well happy. Btw with regards to signing a player from leagues below, Jonjo Shelvey-top drawer I think.

  6. Jermaine Beckford... 52 goals in 76 games in the same division over two seasons for Leeds.

Didn't turn out to be quite as good in the Premier League.

Bobby Zamora was the same at Spurs after banging them in for Brighton, Simon Cox has scored 1 in 26 top flight games having scored 29 in League One for Swindon (and also done quite well in the Championship with West Brom).

Even Theo Walcott managed to get 4 goals in 20-odd games in the lower divisions with Southampton and he's hardly been a roaring success at Arsenal where they play some of the best football.

  7. To be fair 31 in 23 is miles better then any of those stats you have said mate.

  8. At 21, 31 of 23 seems to be great prospect.  But after experiencing Andy Carroll, I am not so sure about the Championship players & English up coming talents.  May be we can buy him for anything between 5-7 mn, but often talented English youth costs obnoxious amounts.  I don't want to pay like 15+ mn for an untested young man.

  9. He does the same hand wing move after he scores as Andy Carroll ;)

Looks decent though, and his numbers speak loud!!!

I don't think he will be a risk if the price is right. Nice Post. YNWA

  10. Statistics from the lower league cannot be used as a yardstick. Despite mediocre performance, we scored past 5 against Oldham. What does that say?

  11. I totally agree with what you say - it will take a few seasons before we can think of signing people like Cavani / Soldado or other names that fans throw around as world class solutions - Champions League stability needs to be accomplished first.

He looks like he is worth a punt - has a range of goals in him so hopefully his name has been mentioned by Comolli / Dalglish as we are shy in the strikers department compared to everyone else.

  12. It says we're finally getting lucky! Downing scored - highlights the fact!

  13. Worth a gamble , you would get money back if he didn't make it , selling him back to a lower league side . So why not , kid might end up a world beater . Martin Kelly should have a good idea how good he is

  14.  I am sold. Looks like the kind of player Kenny would sign. Don't know what DC would think, surely they must know of this guy!

  15. I've read that West Ham were preparing a £4m bid for him but Huddlesfield will be holding out for a bigger Prem club to come in and offer more. Personally, if we can get him for £5m max, it would be good business. He's still learning his trade and seems to be excelling in a team placed 3rd in League 1, so he's not going to be receiving near the quality of service there as he would be at Liverpool. Although, having said that, the defenders & goalkeepers he would face are miles better than the ones he is facing now but he could be our answer to beating the less fashionable teams in the prem that we seem to have a knack of tripping up against. We'll never know until  the deals (if any) are done, personally, I'd like to see some of the promising crop of youngsters given some playing time, it would be good to bring them on for the last 5-10 minutes at home if we're coasting to help them get used to the atmosphere & pace of the games.
Lastly though, nobody has mentioned anything about bringing Pacheco back to cover for Suarez, is his time over with us now?

  16. Huddersfield fan here... I think Rhodes would be a good fit for your squad and fits in with your current philosophy of young English talent. However we're not willing to sell him. We know that doing so will likely end our promotion push and will lead to the gamble of the play-offs. Whilst his true market value is probably around £4m I'd expect it would take at least £8m and maybe even £10m to get him at this stage of the season and I think that that would be a pretty big gamble by any club.

  17. Why should I love blacks? Ok if I say "black", let him answer me "white". What kind of problems. Why he was crying like a girl?

  18. Remember Alfonso Alves? Played in the Dutch league for Heerenveen. I would say that this league is stronger than League 1. I would also say that 47 goals in 39 games is a fantastic return. He went to Middlesborough and managed just 10 goals in 42 appearances. Unless he scores 20+ in the Championship, I wouldn't want to gample, especially in the price range quoted.

  20. How about signing him and loaning back to Huddersfield

  21. Got a mate in Newcastle who knows the clubs legal team and apparently he's earmarked for the Barcodes as Lee Clark is pushing him in that direction. Understandable.

He also said that Liverpool have approached Newcastle regarding Tiote.

  22. Your argument doesn't make sense. It was Liverpool v Oldham so you expect us to score he's scoring 5 on his own with players of hiddersfields quality around him, not internationals. Your comments always border on the moronic and I wonder of you have ever watched a game, especially when you talk about Lucas.

  26. Grant Holt couldn't get a game in that division for Nottingham Forest roughly 5 seasons ago, when he was in his mid-twenties, and now look at him, scoring goals at Liverpool and Chelsea and being a general pain in the backside for opposition defenders. we should sign Rhodes and if it doesn't work out, we will have given him a great platform for the big stage. Well done to Huddersfield for unearthing such a gem courtesy of Ipswich's stupidity. Everyone has to start somewhere and evidently Rhodes knows where the goal is.

  27. I'm not sure we can generalise with Carroll- we can't put every young english prospect in the same bracket. I say give it a go, he fits in with our policy and honestly won't be as painful to the wallet even if he does end up like Carroll. Which in my mind, may still come good and when I mean good we can look at 15-20 goals a season. He wont be as prolific as a Torres or Drog etc..

  28. strikers like rhodes don't need pace

  29. Robbie Fowler didn't have any pace and we all know the three worded name that the Liverpool faithful ended up calling him !!

  30. Some nice goals there.

Can't really tell if it's just others who suck or he playing great but the goal tally suggest that it could be great striker.
Championship is quality competition, goals there are worth as in Eredivisie or in Portuguese first league.

How good for LFC he could be? Does his market value matches his ability
is for scouts, KD and Comoli to decide.

Not enough information on you-tube or in his goal and assist record for an average football fan to tell how good he is, as the competition is not as exposed as PL.
