Why NELSON MANDELA is to blame for Liverpool's 20 year failure to win the league

Liverpool fans continue to blame the club's frustrating 20-year title drought on the usual suspects, including David Moores; Rick Parry; Graeme Souness; Roy Evans; Gerard Houllier; Tom Hicks; George Gillett; Rafa Benitez, and most recently, Roy Hodgson. The truth is, however, that none of them are responsible. The real blame for the club’s abject failure to bring home the trophy Bill Shankly famously called ‘our bread and butter’ lies solely at the feet of one man: former President of South Africa and anti-apartheid activist, Nelson Mandela.

After considering the startling confluence of events that have inexorably led to this conclusion, I feel sure that Liverpool fans will rethink their ingrained views about the club’s demise over the last 20 years. As you will see, Mandela’s negative influence on the club cannot be denied, and I will illustrate this with cold, hard facts:

* In 1959, Bill Shankly took control of a club that was languishing in the English second division. At this time, Mr Mandela was a free man.

* In 1962, Mr Mandela was arrested and imprisoned after being on the run for 17 months. The same year, Liverpool won promotion to the first division.

* In 1964, Mr Mandela was sentenced to life imprisonment. That same year, Liverpool won the league for the first time in 17 years (the number matches the length of time Mr Mandela was on the run).

Coincidence? I think not.

Over the next 27 years, Liverpool became the most successful British football team of all time, winning a whole host of trophies including 12 league titles, 4 European Cups, 4 FA Cups and 2 UEFA cups.

Then:

* In 1990, after 27 years behind bars, Mandela secured a release from prison. Three months later, Liverpool won the league title for the last time.

The facts speak for themselves: Liverpool’s dominance of English football began with Mr Mandela’s imprisonment in 1964 and ended with his release in 1990. At the time of writing, Mandela has been a free man for 20 years, and in that time, Liverpool have failed to win the league title.

Coincidence? Once again, I think not.

Clearly, the club's league success is inextricably linked to Mandela's liberty, and based on the evidence, the inarguable conclusion must be that Liverpool FC can only be successful in the league if Mandela is in prison.

Mandela's destructive influence must be addressed NOW. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and it's our duty as fans to take action and address the damaging impact Mandela's freedom is having on the club's ability to be successful.

To that end, I have hired Lord Grabiner, QC and Richard Snowdon, QC to examine the terms of Mr Mandela’s 1990 release documents. Hopefully, they'll be able to discover some legal loopholes/procedural inconsistencies/Judicial improprieties that will retrospectively invalidate his release.

Liverpool fans can do their part by campaigning for Mandela’s immediate re-imprisonment, and signing this online petition: www.JailMandela.com. Upon collection of as many signatures as possible, the petition will be delivered to Jacob Zuma, the current current South African President, who will (hopefully) take immediate action.

Back in 1990, people around the world - including millions of Liverpool fans - were shouting 'Free Mandela!' as they campaigned for the great man's release. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, though, and little did those fans know that they were effectively sabotaging their own club!

Twenty years later and things have to change change: 'Jail Mandela!' must become every Liverpool fan's mantra, and every premiership ground must reverberate with the power of the Liverpool faithful's commitment to the cause.

The needs of the club outweigh the needs of the individual; with the greatest fans in the world working together in the spirit of 'The Liverpool Way', the goal of having Mr Mandela returned to prison can be achieved, and Liverpool FC can regain its rightful place at the pinnacle of English football.

JAIL MANDELA!!

UPDATE: 17 March 2014: This article is intended as HUMOUR. Look up the word irony in the dictionary. It amazes me that people actually take this as a serious article when it's utterly obvious that it's the complete opposite of that. Also, to all those po-faced idiots on Twitter spewing out faux outrage - check the publication date: I posted this article FOUR YEARS AGO. Seriously, get a sense of humour already.

Seriously now you reached about the level of those who want to sack RH... This article doesn't help anyone. You'll bore those supporting our manager and our club and you won't convince those who - atm- don't.

And the real irony is that 90% of the time I crack up laughing at the drivel you churn out, but in this case, I didn't even smile. Stick to your inimitable interpretation of footie stats lad - you're far funnier at that.

Certainly nowhere near as offensive as some people might find your article above. I genuinely enjoy reading your articles although probably not for the reasons you'd prefer, but like I said, hardly offensive. I guess you're a little more sensitive than I imagined.

I like how you state that Hodgson *must* have Liverpool FC within 3-5 points of the top four on the 1st of January in order to maintain your support - yet, whilst the club currently languishes OUTSIDE this arbitrary benchmark, three points off the relegation zone with six weeks to go to January 1st, you refer to them as an "unreasonable, baying mob". Luckily, that "unreasonable baying mob of hypocrites" known as Liverpool fans (that you seem to despise) will transform on the stroke of Midnight on Years Eve 2010 into an enlightened authority.

    Nonsense.

  37. Well done again RH.Leaves Gerrard on a wet wembley pitch to cover every blade of grass, then 5 minutes before the end comes off in agony injured. What is going on,is RH thinking he had better not upset the FA because when he gets the bullet he wants to be the top of their list.Rafa would never have allowed what happened tonight,Gerrard would have played one half and been under instructions not to exert himselfmit was only a friendly for rafas sake.

  47. Is this like a tax write-off? Write a slew of troll pieces designed to divide Liverpool and boost your egocentric self-appointed 'anti-hero' status, and then write a few 'humourous' puff pieces (please note the strategically placed  apostrophes) to make it look like you're interested in anything other than exploiting turmoil and malcontent within the club to promote your own sense of importance. Lest us not forget that your support of Hicks and Gillett stating that they were a 'necessary evil' and had dragged us kicking and screaming into the 21st century. Basically stuff that a runner up in The Apprentice could do. Lest we forget you proudly displaying emails from the spawn of Hicks thanking you for your support.

Tomorrow it'll be back to bashing Benitez and backing Roy. Not because you genuinely believe that Roy is the right manager for Liverpool but because you know that we don't. Because I do not wish to insult you I'm trying to think of another word for 'sociopath'.

  48. so its ok for Rio to come off but its not ok for Gerrard.Thats it, it just shows how far LFC have fallen from grace.gerrard misses the games against west ham and away to spurs, well be lucky to pick up 1 point maybe 0-0 against west ham at best.Hodgson knows he will get the sack so he is allowing gerrard to play the 90 minutes on a rain sodden pitch at wembley knowing he is well regarded by the fa and with redknapp unlikely to bale out at spurs he will go straight to the top of the fa list for the olympics and england job.what a joke.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Unbelievable.  How is it Hodgson's fault Gerrard played?!  You do not know that Hodgson is not the England manager, right?  Gerrard was fit; HE will have wanted to play and there's nothing Hodgson could've done about that.

    ReplyDelete
  50. LFC supposedly told the FA only to play gerrard for 1 hour, the way Gerrard plays he would always be a risk of getting injured late on especially a heavy wembley pitch. This was only a freindly game.Rafa would have made it clear to the player if they dont bring you off just go through the motions which he used to do a lot,its only lately Gerrard has been busting a gut for England.Every other top manager either pulls their players out of freindlies or lets them play half a game, then I see the top players easing off if they play longer than they should.Rafa had influence it seems RH doesnt have the same clout.

Jamie, I do see the funny side to your article and completely understand that this was posted on jest.

That being said I do believe this article to be very disrespectful to an iconic individual who suffered a severe injustice, in the pursuit of freedom and democracy for millions of South Africans. He is regarded as a father figure to millions and is held in high regard as a respected world leader.

Surely you can muster up an alternative way to try and bring and bring some fun to an article. As a South African. I assure you that some people will consider this to be a rather  lame attempt at trying to bring some humour to an article and will not appreciate your article. Perhaps try to avoid sensitive subjects such as these, especially as you have no real idea as to what many South Africans as well as Former President Nelson Mandela had to endure. Making fun of his imprisonment and suggesing this again (even as a joke) is quite simply disgusting and in poor taste.

    A very disappointed South African.

There is nothing Hodgson you have done about Gerrard staying on...I am sure he is furious about the injury. The decision was Cappellos. He would have asked Stevie to carry on as the senior player, and Stevie as the vice captain and the player that he is would have gladly agreed to help the England cause.

  63. Jamie, I think you have missed the point here.  Whilst I accept that Mr. Mandela should take part of the blame, I think it is his wife who was the chief architect in LFC’s downfall. This is a fact which is often overlooked.

Clearly he tried his very best to stay in prison for as long as possible to avoid spending quality time with her.  Had she been just a little bit nicer, then  he may well have gotten out a few years earlier, which means that his release would have coincided with the Dalglish team that was one of the greatest Liverpool teams ever.

Nelson was often misunderstood so I ask you to take his into consideration future.

With respect I think you have missed the point here.  I am sick and tired of Nelson Mandela getting all the blame for the downfall of LFC.  Whilst I accept that he is partly at fault, I think it is unfair to name him as the the sole destroyer-in-Chief as he could not have possibly managed this by himself.  I ask you to re-examine the evidence, because you will clearly see that it was in fact his wife who the ring leader.

It is common knowlegde that Nelson tried his hardest to stay in prison for as long as possible as he wanted to avoid spending any quality time with her.  Had she been just a little bit nicer, he could have gotten out a few years earlier, which means his release date would have coincided with begining of the Dalglish era, which for me was one of the greatest Liverpool teams of all time.

In addition the Willy Mandela football team were poor tactically, unmotivated and suspect when defending long throws into the box.  Sound familular?  For me the evidence is overwhelming.

Great points, Spike.  I had overlooked the insidious influence of Nelson's wife, but now that you've mentioned it I can definitely see how I may have been a tad harsh on the man.  Clearly, the greatest trick Winnie Mandela ever pulled was convincincing Liverpool fans she had nothing to do with the club's downfall. Your head must be in the clouds and only when you drop down to earth and clear the crap from your eyes you will see that liverpool have not been successful due to the fact we have not had the best manager in charge of the club. Shankly, paisley, fagan and dalglish where all managers who knew how to win and could inspire the un-inspired, motivate the un motivaded and make ordinary players play outstanding football. Now lets draw a line under our history as we can go on about it all day and it really doesnt solve anything, However, Currently we have a manager that un-inspires the inspired, un-motivates the motivated and can make outstanding players play ordinary. Until this situation is fixed then here are some other things that happened in 1990 that we can blame instead of roy hodgson for our current predicament.

    German reunification (July 1, 1990):
    1990-1991: Gulf War I (August 2, 1990-February 28, 1990):

Or shal we as normal football fans just blame the manager and his lack of leadership, motivation, influence, tactics and signings he made!!

The fact is a massive majority did not want Roy in the first place and now we are not really producing good football, its a chance to get him out as really hand on hearts most did not want him in the first place. Any signing that will come in will only be dead wood when another more accomplished manager comes in. The main reason why I am personally against Roy Hodgson being manager is that I asked myself one question when he signed for liverpool. "Do I believe that Roy Hodgson as a manager compared to the other managers that are out there, have the capability to make liverpool into a title winning side". My answer was No chance.

  86. a few matters often ignored -

if some better managers where in the running/wanted the job they wud have been persueded to take it b 4 roy h did!

we have to wake up no white knight is coming to save us we have waht we have - dissenting against even one player or a coach is suicide.

no one stands  out any way as a good choice - forigners who cant speak the lingo!past mangers out of touch, any better mangaers r simmply not available  or interseted at this time, if the lynch mob have there way sammy lee will have to hold the reins till june! FFS

if any one thinks another major change so soon is a good idea look at any other club and try and find a proper suceses from such tactics.

changing now will set us back again it will have us more of a laughing stock

Im not rh's biggest fan by a long way. howver i can see the raeson we are so deep and thats as midfield is mediocre.

its a tough time we r enduring time to buck up and support this is when it counts now - not when we land our nxt cup.
people r rite to be frustrated by certain events in our performances and have the right to boo after the 90.

anything else is detrimental to the club ,end off palin n simple fact - this crazed must sack roy and his buys is lunacy at this stage of a season.

i smell easily led sheep who will absorb all the press drivel , glory fans who wud if they had rhire way  sack past servants at the drop of a hat! ive seen it all b 4 such as whelan, mcallister, alonso, even kriytriakos was slughtered intally.

premature anhilation of lfc servants is an ale house past time, it will not be stopped i just wish our famous rep for knoweledagble fans is not ruined by all the out of control opinions from illinformend people.

look at the recent pachenco rummour - it was only a bit of gossip from a spanish pundits website tottally unfounded yet kopites everywhere have itas cast in stone now, and its all roys fault! ignoring the discipline matter danny had to see out.

hodgsons brief time so far has cast doubt on his ability, he needs to answer these questions, he needs to cowboy up and show his capability.

I am baffled why fans cant see what they do with halfcocked beliefs - the more unfounded lies is spread, the more press vulture soundbites are paraded as gospell will jsut add to LFCs woes and obviously hurt not just Roy H but also our great club!

I despar with it its out of control

the writer here who i must point out with im usually at logerheads with also sounds at a loss

these comments on mandella indicate frustration.

another example of how people belive everthing they read is also illustated by this light hearted article.
just look at how some interpit it its laughable!

we have to lump it and dig in - collective support will get us throu the shit,
u kno like in our anthem

  88.  i dont support such action, it was illadvised of rh to go down that road,

a touch of the gordon starchans its wats needed at press time,

it is again an example of the media hounds pushing for a story, the johnson topic was a fraction of that interview, the hounds got what they wanted and manipulated it.

any way whats the f ing prob johbnson is crap sometimes he needs a kickl in the behind to gee him up.

also some people accuse roy of not doing this or that in proper context he didnt actually hang him out to dry he merley challanged him to show his true form/worth.
if johnson was half the player he supposed to be hed keep his twitter page to promoting shampoo and to his talking on the traing grouns and the pitch!

  89. The snow ball has started and its getting bigger, wait till this saturday. I will be in the kop as usual, when the chants go up for dalglish i will be singing. There was one man that wanted the job and he though he was better than roy and that was kenny dalglish. If the fans where to have chosen either Kenny or Hodgson, you would hear dalglish's name ring out. this is why we will be singing it on the weekend. I understand there may have been no better managers out there but if the choice was kenny or roy. Who would have you left this club with, the man that should be in the dug out is sitting helplessly in the stands!!!!

  92. You wanted to know where there was success at another club by getting rid of a manager shortly after he was appointed?
Chelsea 08/09. Scolari ousted, Hiddink in and then they went on a run in all comps, winning FA cup. It worked.
LFC aren't the same proposition as when Hodgson took over. H+G are gone, the future is brighter now. Managers will be interested again. We don't need to suffer the mediocrity Roy is providing.

  93. It is totally clear that the owners are going to stick with Roy till Jan at the very least, so maybe its best to focus on the positive. I think, if u look at the matches till jan (detailed below) we have a great chance to go on a nice little run, pick up a few points and be within touching distance (say 4/5 pts ) of fourth spot. Spurs away is a tough game, But I would hope to get at draw at the very least against villa at home. The other games are all winnable. Hodgson had a winning run before, he needs to have another good run now, and there is no reason why he shouldnt.

However, if come January we are nowhere near 4th spot than yes I think the owners will ask the question as to whether Roy is the right man to continue and they would be right to do so.

Up to the new year we have:
    wham H, spurs A, villa H, newcastle A, Fulham H, Blackpool A, Wolves H, Bolton H

  108. Jaimie, as you have stated before, the opinions you offer are your own. Rightly so...its your website. If you want to acknowledge Johnson's and indeed Konchesky's and Poulsen's performance in a match then go for it. The viewpoints you choose to disseminate shouldnt depend upon prior acknowlegements by others.

I myself was very pleased by yesterday's performance. Obviously the 2nd half was a little disappointing it would have been nice to use the opportunity to improve our goal diff, but overall a good 3 points. It was pleasing to see some of the more maligned players of late performing with a bit of swagger!

Most LFC fans have been pleased with John Henry's approach so far, and his relationship with us. I think its important we reciprocate his conduct by respecting his decision and backing Roy. Ultimately the fate of the manager is in the hands of Henry and NESV. I really get a strong feeling of consistency from Henry...he has given his unequivocal support to Roy, and I cant see him suddenely retracting that. There seems to be a needless futility in continuously tweeting 'sack Roy' pleas to him. Furthermore the continued speculation (often media driven) that he is to be replaced is not going to help the manager or the team perform better.

There are quite a few things Roy has done that I just don't agree with. However
as I've stated in a previous post, we now need to focus on this opportunity to get a good run going. Even if we lose to Spurs, its not a disaster. There still would be 6 potentially winnable games to Jan. Its quite simple....if Roy and the team play positively, there is no reason why we wont be right up there for fourth, come the new year.

I'm loving the excitment of the premiership at the moment, look at what has happened to Chelsea and Bolton! Who knows where the title will end up, and indeed who will be in the top four. So much more exciting than the boring predictablity of La Ligas two horse race! We can do it! YNWA!

  109. I think has the potential to be a really good right back. There is no doubting his ability going forward. But there have been numerous times last and this season where he has been culpable for defensive mistakes. There is an argument that says when you are paying 17 million pounds for player a signficantly higher level of defensive performance would be expected.

However the pleasing thing after hearing GJ speak yesterday is that he is able to acknowledge his weaknesses and is determined to improve.

In my opinion, GJ ideal position would be wing back. Obviously that would mean playing three at the back which would be impractical. Some have suggested that he move up to RW (as spurs did on the left with Bale) , and that we start to play Kelly as RB. It has been suggested that this could work because GJ's experience as RB would lead him to back track more than the average RW to support the developing Kelly until he had more experience. I would be interested to know what people thought of that idea?

  110. It's just one game; it doesn't change a year and a half of defensive liability. Changing an opinion about something after one fame us fickle; let's see some consistency from Johnson and then we'll talk.

  111. Its a good point Jaimie. its over to all the players to prove there worth. what i want to see at liverpool is players chomping at the bit to get into the first team and establish themselves. Liverppol have a good weeks rest before the spurs game so lets see where that brings us.
With regard to the club in my opinion its been mis manage since john smith the late liverpool chairman passed away along with peter Robinson retirement. Liverpool as evryone knows needs to improve commercially and tap into all potential revenues. As for players we either need to produce them or buy or world class players. lets have no wasting mone and lets run a tight ship.
    Love the articles

  112. Jaimie, I'm not sure what you're talking about. I've don't recall commenting on either Konchesky or Poulsen on this site. Are you making assumptions about my opinion of them? I only asked if you had anything positive to say regarding Johnson's performance yesterday, as I know you've been critical of him in the past.

    ReplyDelete
  113. I agree that johnson has work to do in defence but he was the only player who provided liverpool with width on saturday, if we are going to win against better oposition then we need these type of players and this option. Second half against west ham we where again a different team, two banks of 4 coming deep. This will be exploited by better teams. Konchestky is not good enough, his only option a few times was trying to push the ball past the defender and bully his way through to no avail. As soon as aurelio came on, his general play and ability is way ahead of konchesky and he has been out for a long time. We must remember it was west ham and they where awful. Second half was not good to be standing at the back of the kop, all but a few maixi and torres songs and the threat of bouncing, the atmosphere really did reflect the second half performance, mediocre.
