Deal Agreed: Liverpool very close to signing 'fantastic' £25m powerhouse; Klopp confident of transfer

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is reportedly close to sealing Liverpool's first transfer of the summer.

Last month, the Liverpool Echo claimed that Jurgen Klopp 'wants to sign Michael Keane', and according to The Mirror today:

* Liverpool are close to signing 'fantastic' Keane for £25m on a four year deal.

* Keane is Klopp's top defensive target, and Liverpool are 'confident of closing the deal'.

* Personal terms have been agreed between Liverpool and Keane, who is 'waiting to see whether Liverpool qualify for the Champions League' before committing himself.

So, let me get this straight: a (comparatively) barely-known defender who plays for relegation fodder is waiting to see whether Liverpool satisfy his Champions League requirements before agreeing to sign for the club?

How the mighty have fallen. It's a sad state of affairs when a club of Liverpool's history, prestige, and standing struggles to convince a Burnley player (with all due respect) to sign. If we're talking about Kroos, Rakitic, or Aubameyang, then fair enough, but Michael Keane?!

If true, you have to admire the sheer chutzpah of the guy, but a player with Keane's lack of standing should never be allowed to string Liverpool along in this manner. Keane should be thanking his lucky stars that the Reds are willing to rescue him from obscurity, and if Klopp can't persuade a player with zero track record to sign for the Reds (irrespective of CL football) then there's a problem somewhere.

I'd expect this under Brendan Rodgers, but Klopp is supposed to have some extra pull in the transfer market. It seems, however, that Klopp's presence isn't enough by itself to attract the mighty Michael Keane.

Rank presumptuousness aside, Keane is the perfect age for a move to Liverpool, but the biggest plus is that he is yet to suffer a major injury, which - given the regular injuries to Matip and Lovren - is an important factor.

Skybet currently have Liverpool as 3rd favourites to sign Keane this summer, after Man Utd and Everton.
