Deal Close? Liverpool in talks to sign 'fantastic' PSG sensation; Klopp favourite to agree transfer

If the last five years of Liverpool transfer rumours has proven anything, it's this: if a player has the surname 'Dembele', then the Reds will be interested ;-)

In recent years, Liverpool have been linked with Moussa Dembele (Celtic), Ousmane Dembele, and Mousa Dembele (Spurs), and according to French newspaper L'Equipe this week:

* Liverpool are favourites to sign 'fantastic' Paris St. Germain defender Mahamadou Dembele.

* The teenager has 'already met with reps from Liverpool' to discuss a move to Anfield.

Some info about this particular Dembele:

* 18-year old centre-back. Yet to make a first-team appearance for PSG.

* Captain of PSG's U19 team.

* 14 apps for various France youth teams.

* Jun 2016: Led PSG's U16 to the league title. After the final game, he enthused: "I'm very happy to have won the championship of France after losing the final last year. Thanks to the whole team!"

* Apr 2017: L'Equipe claimed that Dembele is 'close' reaching a contract agreement with PSG.

Meh. It's mystifying to me why Liverpool are (allegedly) interested in a player who has zero top level experience. At this stage, there's no way to even know if Dembele has the ability, temperament, and mentality to excel at the highest level

Plus, given the fact his contract expires in June, it smacks of trying to sign Dembele simply because he's attainable (and cheap), rather than sealing a deal because he can genuinely improve the squad.

Or, since every Dembele in European football has turned out to be a top player, perhaps Liverpool are taking a punt in the hope that this particular Dembele follows continues the trend ;-D
