With the summer transfer window fast approaching, Liverpool continue to be linked with one of the Championship's brightest prospects.
Last month, The Independent claimed that Liverpool were close agreeing a deal for Fulham star Ryan Sessegnon, and according to the Daily Mail today:
"Liverpool hope to beat Tottenham and Manchester City to the signing of Ryan Sessegnon, who is one of Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp's prime targets".
UK Bookmakers currently have Liverpool as 13/5 favourites to sign Sessegnon, but Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic has urged the youngster to continue his development at Craven Cottage:
"The best thing is for [Sessegnon] to stay with us, and keep learning and preparing for a more important step. He should just enjoy his first days as a professional at this level".
When asked recently about the ongoing transfer speculation, 'excellent' Sessegnon mused:
"I don't pay too much attention to it [the talk in the press] I just focus on one job. I am a Fulham player, this is my club, I love being at this club".
Jokanovic is obviously right, but his words will probably fall on deaf ears. There's (arguably) no developmental reason for a 16-year old to leave when he's playing regular Championship football, but if £15m-rated Sessegnon follows the money to Liverpool (or some other top Premier League side) it'll be his funeral.
In my view, it's utterly ridiculous to sign a 16-year old for the first-team, and make no mistake, Sessegnon isn't an Academy signing, and he'll have expectations of regular first-team football. Liverpool need an experienced left-back, not a kid who is still growing and physically developing.
