With Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren increasingly injury prone, and Mamadou Sakho on the fast-track to exitville, a new centre-half is arguably a priority this summer, and Jurgen Klopp is reportedly bringing in one of his old signings to fill the void.
According to The Express:
"Liverpool are to bid for Borussia Dortmund defender Matthias Ginter. Klopp views Ginter as a perfect buy [and] will try to use his Dortmund connections to seal the transfer in July".
Some info about Ginter:
* 23-year old centre-back. Contract expires: 2019
* Dortmund: 90 apps (16 goals/assists). 9 apps for the German national team.
* Started as an attacking midfielder. Grabbed 21 goals in 39 appearances for Freiburg's U19s.
* Scouting Report: "Well suited to the physical demands of his position. Physically imposing with excellent distribution. Fine reading of the game, and surprisingly nippy on his feet".
* Jul 2014: After signing for Dortmund, Ginter raved: "Today, I'm fulfilling a childhood dream as I was always a huge Dortmund fan".
* Jul 2016: BVB boss Thomas Tuchel insisted: "English clubs want to sign him, but we made our point clear: Matthias is our player and stays our player."
This particular transfer rumour makes sense as Klopp signed €25m-rated Ginter for Dortmund back in 2014. However, with Ginter now a regular at the heart of Dortmund's defence, it's unclear why he'd want to leave a team he describes as his 'favourite club'.
Is Ginter an upgrade on Dejan Lovren?
* Sep 2015: Described as 'sensational' by Ilkay Gundogan.
