The Julian Brandt rumours refuse to die, and according to one Liverpool-based journalist, the German attacker is definitely on Jurgen Klopp's transfer wishlist for the upcoming transfer window.
Last month, the Liverpool Echo claimed:
"The ECHO understands that Bayer Leverkusen winger Julian Brandt is one of the Reds' top targets".
Several other credible news outlets have also reported that the allegedly 'exceptional' Brandt is Liverpool's top target, including ESPN, which recently claimed that:
* Brandt remains Klopp's 'primary target' for the summer window.
* Liverpool have already made an official bid for the 20-year old.
Now, the Echo's James Pearce appears to have some inside info on the deal. Speaking to Anfield Extra this week, Pearce claimed:
"He [Brandt] is certainly very high up on Klopp’s summer shopping list. Klopp rates Brandt very highly [and] wanted to buy him in January. Liverpool will certainly go all out to get him this summer".
When asked in January about his future, Brandt confirmed that he wants to 'renew' his contract at Leverkusen, and further admitted:
"I don't want to deal with this [transfer speculation] forever. It gets annoying and performances will suffer because of it."
Brandt's performances already appear to be suffering - he's scored only 3 goals in 29 games this season (one every 670 mins), and his assists tally is not much better. For me, though, the bigger red flag is Brandt's admission that his performances might 'suffer' as a result of transfer speculation.
A player with a strong mentality doesn't allow such things to affect performance, and strong-minded players just take it in their stride and get on with it. If Brandt can't hack the trifling, comparatively minimal pressure of transfer speculation, how will he handle the intense pressure and expectation of playing for Liverpool?
Thanks, but no thanks. Brandt probably fits the template of the kind of player Klopp likes to sign (Pliable, malleable, subservient, obedient etc), but Liverpool need to sign confident, mentally strong leaders, not mewling millenial milksops.
