Anfield MegaDeal: Legend insists Liverpool 'need' to sign 'superb' £40m powerhouse this week; Klopp wants deal now

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has called for Jurgen Klopp to sign one of the Premier League's most coveted players.

When asked over the weekend who Liverpool should sign this month, Gerrard told BT Sport:

"Who I think we need, I would go and try and bid for Virgil Van Dijk from Southampton".

Gerrard's former team-mates Jamie Redknapp and Jamie Carragher are also fans of 'superb' Van Dijk. In December, Carra insisted, that Klopp should spend '£40m' on the Dutchman, and explained why the deal is necessary:

"Matip has fitness issues, as does Lovren. If Klopp wants someone in January, he has to be backed, as the stakes could get very big for Liverpool in 2017. I still think he needs a defender".

After Soton's 1-0 EFL win over Liverpool, Redknapp enthused:

"He [Van Dijk]is immense. He's so comfortable on the ball. Whoever decides to buy him, he is a fantastic player. There's not a better centre-back in the Prem."

According to De Telegraaf:

"Liverpool have sent scouts to watch Van Dijk every week for the last two months. They want to sign him in January, and are willing to pay £25m".

I sincerely doubt that Southampton will sell for such a comparatively piffling amount. Van Dijk is in demand, which means the Saints can afford to hold out for the highest bid. Alas, lowballing clubs with smaller bids is one of Liverpool's transfer trademarks, which probably means that van Dijk will end up at Chelsea, Man City, Arsenal, or Man Utd in the summer.

If, however, Liverpool somehow contrive to sign Van Dijk, it'll be somewhat ironic as it'll almost certainly mean curtains (or a reduced first-team role) for Dejan Lovren...who also signed from Southampton.
