Klavan vs. Lovren: Who should make way tonight for Joel Matip's inevitable return to the first team?
After a recent enforced spell on the sidelines, and Sunday's disastrous 3-2 home defeat to Swansea, it seems inevitable that Matip will return against Southampton, but at whose expense?
Prior to Saturday's slip-up at Anfield, Liverpool had conceded just two open-play goals in seven games with the Lovren-Klavan partnership anchoring the team, so clearly - bar one aberration - both defenders have performed well over the last month. That said, both Lovren and Klavan made errors against Swansea that (either directly or indirectly) led to goals:
* Lovren: Beaten by Fernandez in the air, whose knockdown led to Llorente's goal.
* Klavan: Poor clearance fell straight to Sigurdsson, who scored the winner.
I conducted a poll this week asking fans who should make way, and the results were emphatic:
* 76% of participating fans voted for KLAVAN to be dropped, with Lovren staying in the team.
Given the prior solidity of the Lovren/Matip partnership, I can see the logic here, but I personally voted for Lovren to be benched, though I doubt Klopp will make that decision.
^ Reportedly on £30k-a-week. Described by Klopp as a 'wonderful' player.
