Reds midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has revealed why he rejected Spurs for Liverpool.
Speaking to The Guardian this week, Wijnaldum explained:
“Liverpool really wanted to sign me. I had great conversations with [Mauricio] Pochettino and Klopp, but with Jurgen, we had a laugh and did not speak only about football. He was interested in my personal life and that was good".
Last season, Spurs finished five places and ten points ahead of Liverpool in third place, so it's a little surprising that Wijnaldum chose the Reds over a team in the Champions League.
So far, it looks like Wijnaldum made the right decision. The tables are turned this season, with Liverpool 3 places and six points ahead of Spurs right now, though with 25 league games left, there's still a long way to go.
On a different note: With Lallana, Coutinho, and Firmino now injured, Klopp will surely be forced to play Wijnaldum higher up the field?
The Reds have Lucas, Stewart, and Grujic to cover in midfield, but attacking options are looking thin on the ground right now, so it makes sense to move the Dutchman into the role he played to such great effect at Newcastle.
Possible line-up if Firmino, Coutinho, and Lallana miss the next game:
-------------- Karius
Clyne --- Matip --- Lovren ---- Milner
-------- Can - Hendo - Stewart
----- Mane --- Origi -- Wijnaldum
^ Wijnaldum: Hailed by Klopp for his 'exciting' potential. Cost Liverpool £25m.
