Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has revealed his personal support for one of the Reds' oft-criticised players.
In his column for The Mirror this week, Fowler dismissed recent criticism of Dejan Lovren, and insisted that the Croatian remains an 'excellent defender'. He explained:
"I know he [Lovren] made a big error last week, but look how he reacted. He’s got character, and I’ve told him that. I messaged him and told him to keep his head up. I’m not claiming any credit for anything Lovren does now, I’m trying to make the point I always rated him"
Mistake against Crystal Palace aside, Lovren's form is encouraging this season, and statistically, the Croatian's success rate for tackles, and aerial/ground duels is superior to fan-favourite Joel Matip.
All defenders make mistakes, and I'm sure, at some point, Matip will also make a costly error, but as Fowler notes, Lovren reacted in the right way to his Crystal Palace error, and Liverpool ultimately went on to win the game.
On a related note: the good news this week is that Lovren, Matip, and Karius are all training together during the international break, which can only improve their rapport and understanding.
^ Lovren: Cost Liverpool £20m.
