Boss Confirms: 'Excellent' attacker who visited Anfield was 'about to sign for Liverpool'

Ex-Marseille boss Jose Anigo has confirmed that Liverpool almost signed one of France's most coveted young players.

Speaking to L'Equipe on Sunday, Anigo revealed:

"Maxime Lopez was about to sign for them [Liverpool] in 2014."

This fits with a Daily Mail report from 2014, which claimed:

"Liverpool invited Lopez to the Merseyside derby, and he met with Brendan Rodgers".

The Reds were last linked with Lopez on November 4th, when TalkSport reported:

"Liverpool are interested in signing Marseille attacker Maxime Lopez [and] have sent scouts to watch him in action".

Some info about Lopez:

* 18-year old attacking midfielder, who can also play on either wing. Contract expires: 2017. Nicknamed the 'New Nasri'.

* Marseille: Only 8 senior apps so far (O goals/1 assist). 3 goals/assists in 6 apps for Marseille's U19 team.

* Nov 2016: Lopez's team-mate Florian Thauvin raved: "He [Lopez] played an excellent match. He’s a very good player and has a very bright future.”

* Nov 2016: Marseille right-back Rod Fanni's assessment: "He [Lopez] has everything to become a great number 10. He will have to work physically because he has not a very imposing size, but he can do it".

8 senior games to his name in one of Europe's weaker leagues? Meh.
