Liverpool will have to break the club's transfer record to sign Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk.
According to Sky Sports today:
"Virgil van Dijk has attracted interest from Manchester United and Liverpool [and] Southampton will ask for £40m from clubs interested in signing the Netherlands centre-back".
£40m? Obviously, Van Dijk is worth whatever an interested club is willing to pay, but it's exceedingly unlikely (IMO) that Liverpool pay that amount of money for a centre-back.
The club's current record for a central defender is £20m on Dejan Lovren, and based on the Croatian's current form, there's no way Van Dijk is worth £20m more.
That said, a £40m fee will make Van Dijk the third most expensive defender in history (behind David Luiz, and John Stones), and statistically, the Dutch international compares favourably to both.
I can see Man United paying crazy money for a defender, but Jurgen Klopp? Unlikely.
* Described by Fraser Forster as 'fantastic'
