Anfield legend Jamie Carragher has singled out two Liverpool players for praise after the Reds' hard-fought win over Sunderland.
Reacting to Liverpool's 2-0 victory, Carra raved:
"Big win for Liverpool. I thought Firmino and Lovren were the standout players. And well done to Ben Woodburn on his debut".
The win puts Liverpool back on top of the Premier League, and Carra is right - it's a crucial victory, and it's good to see the Reds triumph amid injury-plagued adversity.
After last week's 0-0 draw at Southampton, it was important to get back to winning ways, and this type of 'dig it out' win bodes well for Liverpool's ability to sustain a viable title challenge.
Several players were arguably below par (Can, and Mane in particular, both of whom repeatedly gave the ball away), but the team dug out the victory, and ultimately, that's the most important thing.
The only goal this season is to finish fourth or higher in the league, and ugly victories help to achieve that just as much as exciting, goal-laden wins.
Man of the Match: Lovren. I don't get the praise for Firmino's performance; to me, he was merely average. Lovren, however, delivered an imperious defensive display, and provided a goal threat in the final third.
* Firmino and Lovren: Combined cost = £46m.
