Redknapp raves: 'Fantastic' £15m playmaker Liverpool tried to sign is like 'Mesut Ozil'. Future transfer?

Ex-Red Jamie Redknapp has compared Derby midfielder Will Hughes with one of Europe's most exciting attacking players.

In his column for the Daily Mail today, Redknapp raved:

"Will Hughes is the Mesut Ozil of the Championship. He is a great talent — very easy on the eye with a fantastic range of passing — and Premier League scouts must be watching him every week".

Talk about piling on the pressure (!)

Liverpool were regularly linked with Hughes - a Liverpool fan - during Brendan Rodgers' reign, and at one point, ex-Derby boss Nigel Clough confirmed:

"Liverpool Scouts come to watch him but we haven’t had any bids. If an offer comes in we’ll look at it".

Soon after, Rodgers also confirmed LFC's interest:

"He [Hughes] is a wonderful talent. We’re always looking for talent, and he along with many others is one that we’ve looked at".

Reds legend Jamie Carragher shares Redknapp's view on Hughes, and at the time of Liverpool's prior interest, he enthused:

"His [Hughes'] reputation is growing by the week and he was excellent when England’s Under 21s demolished Scotland 6-0 earlier this month. The way he carries himself and the way he passes the ball suggest he has got a big future".

£15m-rated Hughes is still only 21, but despite Redknapp's glowing endorsement, his end product is pretty average:

* This Season: 0 goals/2 assists in 17 apps

* Derby Total: 10 goals/16 assists in 162 apps (Goal every 1224 mins. G/A every 470 mins)

A possible future target for Liverpool, or has the ship sailed?
