Over the last few years, Liverpool have been regularly been linked with a whole host of Barcelona players, and ex-Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has now confirmed that he tried to sign one of the club's most promising young talents.
In a press conference on Monday, Rodgers told reporters:
"I tried to sign Thiago Alcantara for Liverpool, but couldn't because he wanted to sign for Bayern. I've seen many games of Barca's youth football and I love how the club works and its values."
'Fearless' Alcantara cost Bayern €25m in the summer of 2013, but he probably would've been better off coming to Anfield and working with Rodgers.
Since signing for Bayern, Alcantara has averaged only 18 starts a season for three years, and given the fact Bayern play 50-60 games per year *every year*, it's clear that the Spaniard is a proverbial bit-part player.
At Liverpool, Alcantara probably would've got significantly more game time, but when it comes to a straight choice between Bayern and LFC, it's, sadly, no contest.
As for Rodgers - he may have a soft spot Barcelona, but I doubt he's feeling the 'love' tonight after Suarez, Messi et al smashed Celtic 7-0 (!)
The SPL is light years behind La Liga in overall quality, and financial clout, so that kind of result is hardly a surprise.
* Note: Any posts belittling Rodgers in a mean-spirited way will be deleted.
