Anfield Update: Klopp still keen to sign 'top' €18m powerhouse. Liverpool transfer agreed last season, but failed

Last season, Inter Milan outcast Andrea Ranocchia reportedly agreed to sign for Liverpool, and although the deal fell through, new reports suggest that Ranocchia remains on Jurgen Klopp's transfer watchlist.

In January, TuttoMercato reported:

"There is contact between the Liverpool and [Inter]. Ranocchia has already said yes to the transfer".

Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri added:

"Liverpool have [an] agreement in principle with Inter's Ranocchia. Talks ongoing with Inter".

Today, Calcio Mercato claims that:

* Liverpool are planning to make an offer for Ranocchia in January.

* Klopp is an admirer of the Italian centre-back and wants him in his defence for the second half of the season.

Some info about Ranocchia:

* 6'5 central defender, who cost Inter €18m. Current contract expires in 2019. Started only two games this season.

* Dec 2015: German newspaper Bild claimed that Klopp wanted Ranocchia at Dortmund.

* ESPN's assessment of Ranocchia: "Often guilty of mistakes that cost points. Decision making a major weakness. Often panicked into giving the ball away or misjudging a situation. Biggest enemy is his own mind as he does not trust himself".

Mistakes that lead to goals? Bad decision-making? Misjudging situations? Mentally suspect? Sign him up! But seriously - if Ranocchia can't handle it at Inter, how is he going to succeed at LFC, where pressure/expectation is (arguably) significantly more intense? On the plus side, according to Inter Legend Marco Materazzi:

"Ranocchia is one of the top three Italian defenders. Inter fans will think me mad for saying that, but it’s what I believe".

In recent weeks, Liverpool have continually been linked with new centre-halves, and if any of these stories are true, it looks like there's no way back for Mamadou Sakho.
