Aldo insists: Liverpool transfer for 'brilliant' £112k-a-week star is 'ridiculous'; hails Klopp for 'free' deal

After impressive performances against Chelsea and Derby, Joel Matip is currently receiving praise on all sides, and Liverpool legend John Aldridge is the latest ex-Red to to hail the Cameroon international.

In his column for the Liverpool Echo this week, Aldo admitted that Matip 'reminds' him 'Sami Hyypia', and further raved:

"He was brilliant on Friday. Don't forget he [Matip] came on a free. Ridiculous. Jurgen Klopp plucked this one out of nowhere".

With Matip at the heart of the defence, Liverpool look much better from set-pieces, and over a season, that could saved the Reds 6-8 points in the league, which is a potentially massive boost.

As for the Hyypia comparison: Like Hyppia, Matip appears to have great positioning, and game intelligence, which compensates for a lack of blistering pace. Plus, he is imperious in the air, and that Hyypia-esque aerial domination is something Liverpool have sorely lacked over the last seven years.

For me, one of the biggest positives about the Matip transfer is that - unlike Sakho and Lovren - he doesn't have the burden of having to live up to a massive price tag, and that shouldn't be underestimated.

Hyypia cost Liverpool a paltry £2.3m back in 1999 and became a vital part of the team for ten years. Is Matip capable of emulating that achievement?
