Carra insists: 'Excellent' Liverpool star looks 'like a £20m player' but must 'improve' ASAP

After a difficult first season at Anfield, £20m signing Dejan Lovren upped his game last year, and ultimately emerged as one of the club's most improved players. With Sakho out of the picture, Lovren is now one of the first defensive names on the team sheet, but Reds legend Jamie Carragher asserts that the Croatian international still has a lot of improving to do.

In a recent interview with Goal.com, Carra claimed Lovren is looking more and more 'like a £20m player', but insisted:

“He [Lovren] vastly improved in his second season, but there’s a way to go for him yet. There’s still some improvement we’d like to see at Liverpool".

Lovren's attempts to improve will not be helped by the ongoing merry-go round in defence. Whether it's a new goalkeeper, different full-backs, or alternating central-defensive partners, things are changing on a weekly basis around Lovren, and six goals conceded in three games shows that the Reds are still lacking real defensive stability.

That said, things may be about to settle down in defence. Joel Matip is now in the team; Milner is the preferred left-back, and Clyne is an everpresent on the right, so with a settled defensive unit around him, Lovren should be able to achieve a level of consistency.

The elephant in the room is, of course, the lack of a consistent defensive-midfield presence. Even settled defensive units need protection, and until Jurgen Klopp solves this problem, Liverpool will continue to leak goals.
