Liverpool are reportedly very close to signing Augsburg central defender Ragnar Klavan, and new reports today claim that the deal will be completed on Tuesday.
On Sunday, the BBC claimed:
"Liverpool are closing in on a deal to sign Ragnar Klavan".
According to the Liverpool Echo:
"Ragnar Klavan is due to undergo a medical on Tuesday...to finalise his switch to Anfield".
As noted in a previous article, there's no point to this transfer if the idea is to waste Klavan as a temporary Toure-esque stop-gap.
However, if Klopp genuinely gives Klavan a chance to become a regular for the club (i.e. he keeps him in the team if he plays well), then the Estonian could potentially be astute signing:
* Experience: 108 caps for Estonia.
* Leadership: Captain of the Estonia national team.
* Ability: Three-time winner of the nation's 'Player of the Year' award.
* Robust: Missed just 8 games through injury since 2009.
Both Lovren and Sakho are (IMO) replaceable, and Klavan should be placed on a level playing field, and if he exceeds either of them defensively, then keep him in the team.
I just hope it's not another Steven Caulker situation, where Klopp had no intention of giving him a fair run at the first team. Klavan is too experienced and (by all accounts) too good to be treated in such a manner.
