Kolo Toure rolled back the years on Wednesday to deliver Liverpool's most effective individual performance in the Europa League final, and after maintaining a high standards all season, the Ivorian is surely deserving of a new contract? Toure remains a popular figure amongst the fanbase, but he still appears to be in the dark over his Anfield future.
When asked last night about the possibility of a new contract, Toure told reporters:
“I don’t know [about my future] to be honest. You will have to ask the manager. Of course I want to stay. It’s a great club to play in, but the manager has his plan and any decision I will respect".
Last month, Klopp hailed Toure as 'very important, even when he doesn't play', and on the subject of a new deal, he added:
"A big part of Kolo's future is at Liverpool. He's one of the most impressive people I have met".
Toure - who reportedly earns £65k-a-week - is, quite simply a solid, dependable, no-nonsense centre-back, who gets the job done with the minimum of fuss, and when fully fit, he's a real asset to the team.
That said, the arrival of Joel Matip appears to be another nail in Toure's Anfield coffin, but a recent poll on the site shows that Liverpool fans still have great faith in the Ivorian to do a job for the team:
Liverpool legend John Aldridge is also a fan of Toure, and in a recent column for the Liverpool Echo, he enthused:
"[Toure] is an absolute diamond of a fella, a true gentleman who is loved and respected by everyone. He's a top pro and has been a fantastic player too".
Toure seems to accept his reduced role in the team, so if he's happy to stay as a squad player there's absolutely no risk in keeping him around. In this case, the reward vastly outweighs the risk, so give him a new contract already.
On a related note, perhaps Klopp has a coaching role in mind for Toure?
