After a successful loan spell at Brentford, 19-year old Liverpool starlet Sergi Canos is on his way back to Anfield, and he's determined to break into the Jurgen Klopp's first-team squad for next season.
Canos grabbed 10 goals/assists in 37 games for Brentford this season (one every 160 minutes), and speaking to the Liverpool Echo today, he enthused:
“I want to show Klopp that I’m ready to play for Liverpool. When I was at Barca I saw the semi-final of Malaga and Borussia Dortmund and I was like, ‘I hope one day I can work with Klopp’".
Easier said than done. Liverpool don't have many dedicated wingers, but with Ibe and Ojo in the squad, and a whole host of other attacking players in the team (Coutinho, Firmino, Lallana, plus one or two more to inevitably arrive this summer), it's going to be tough for Canos to get significant game time.
Despite Klopp's protestations to the contrary, the most likely eventuality is another loan deal next season. Alternatively, with with the Academy slimming its ranks, It's also conceivable that Canos may follow Jordan Rossiter out the door.
That'll be a shame, as Canos - hailed by U21 coach Michael Beale as 'fantastic' - rejected Barcelona to sign for Liverpool, and playing for the club is his 'dream':
“Liverpool offered me things at a sporting level that Barça didn’t. That is what I decided. I am searching for my dream. Every time I go to Anfield I get goosebumps seeing how the fans support Liverpool".
