Over the weekend, 'extraordinary' Liverpool target Mario Gotze^ confirmed his intention to stay at Bayern Munich, and a crucial new development today suggests that a transfer to Anfield is almost certainly off the table.
On Sunday, Gotze told Bild:
"I look forward to the new season in Munich and will do everything possible to be in top shape for my first training session under Carlo Ancelotti".
When asked today about a potential move to Liverpool, Gotze's father - who is also his new agent - all but dismissed the possibility of a transfer:
“I don’t know anything about an alleged imminent transfer to Liverpool. Mario is my son, we talk to each other. I would know about it.”
A week ago, the Gotze deal seemed nailed-on, but Liverpool's failure to qualify for Europe next season has (negatively) changed the transfer landscape at Anfield.
As such, who can blame Gotze for rejecting the chance to sign for a team that just finished 8th in the league? Outside of the opportunity to work with Jurgen Klopp, there's little appeal for Gotze to swap Bayern Munich for Liverpool.
Of course, this could be a giant smokescreen, with Gotze's father trying to throw the media off the scent by disseminating misinformation, but if you believe that, you'll believe anything.
On the plus side, this probably means another season with Adam Lallana as an everpresent. All's well that ends well ;-)
