It's official: Liverpool have confirmed the signing German goalkeeper Loris Karius, who becomes Jurgen Klopp's fourth signing after Steven Caulker, Marko Grujic, and Joel Matip.
Earlier today, Liverpool posted the following statement:
"Liverpool have confirmed a deal has been reached to sign Loris Karius...after completing a medical. He will officially become a Reds player on July 1".
Jurgen Klopp's response:
"I am delighted we have signed Loris, he had a fantastic season and [has] shown such a desire to come to Liverpool, with a lot of other clubs interested in him".
After agreeing the deal Karius admitted that it's an 'honour to play for a club like Liverpool', and hailed the club's fans as 'amazing'. He further added:
"I spoke to him [Klopp] and I had a good feeling. It was a good talk with him and after that I was convinced this was the right decision".
Karius has been handed the number-1 shirt, but that doesn't mean he'll be Liverpool's number-one. Mignolet chose the number-22 shirt as it's the number he's had for his entire career. That said, Karius is seemingly determined to oust Mignolet from the starting line-up:
"I wouldn’t make the move if I thought I was just going to sit on the bench. I want to be in goal and play for Liverpool every week".
Fighting talk - I like it, and the sooner Mignolet is reduced to squad player status, the better.
Karius probably won't start next season as the club's number-one, though - he is expected to be named in Germany's Olympic squad, which means he'll miss the first three weeks of next season. As such, if Mignolet plays well, Karius have a hard job relegating the Belgian to the bench.
