On Thursday, Borussia Dortmund confirmed the signing of coveted attacker Ousmane Dembele, and the arrival of the youngster surely spells the end of BVB's alleged interest in Mario Gotze. This is (potentially) good news for Liverpool, and according to Germany legend Franz Beckenbauer, Gotze's best option is to follow Jurgen Klopp to Anfield.
Gotze is reportedly 'keen' to link up with with Klopp this summer', and Beckenbauer believes that a transfer to Liverpool is the €50m-rated attacker's best option. He told Sky Germany:
"In his [Gotze's] place, I would go to a place [Liverpool] where I feel comfortable; I would follow in the footsteps of Jurgen Klopp".
Reds legend Jan Molby has also urged Liverpool to 'gamble on signing Gotze. In a recent column for the Liverpool Echo, Molby conceded that Gotze has 'lost his way' at Bayern, but raved over his 'massive' ability, and urged the club to try and seal a deal:
"If Liverpool can get him [Gotze], they’ll be acquiring a top class talent. Klopp had him firing before. At Dortmund he was irresistible [and] you can never have too many good attacking players".
I remain unconvinced by this potential transfer, for the following reasons:
* 8 muscle injuries in the last 3.5 seasons, including 116 days out this season with a hamstring injury. Clearly, Gotze has muscle issues, and that is unlikely to improve under Klopp's high-intensity regime.
* Gotze - who confirmed recently that he is in text contact with Klopp - isn't the tallest or physically strongest player, and he may struggle with the physicality of the Premier League.
* With Lallana, Coutinho, and Firmino, Liverpool already have too many number-10s, and if Gotze arrives, it'll mean attacking players constantly playing out of position.
That said, if signing Gotze means Adam Lallana is relegated to the bench, then I'm all for it ;-)
^ Described by Klopp as a player with extraordinary abilities.
