Transfer Shocker: Liverpool make surprise offer for 'top class' £52k-a-week Barcelona star. Replace Sakho?

With beleaguered defender Mamadou Sakho facing a lengthy ban, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is already thinking about filling the void, and Barcelona outcast Thomas Vermaelen appears to be at the top of the manager's list of potential replacements.

According to Sky Sports:

"Liverpool have made the 'first formal offer' for Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen^. The Catalonians are ready to cut their losses".

This has to be some kind a sick joke - Vermaelen is one of the most consistently injured players in Europe:

* 722 days missed through injury over the last five seasons (Averages close to 5 months out injured every season)

* 146 games missed since 2011/12 (For Arsenal and Barcelona).

* Barcelona: 64 games missed over the last two seasons.

* Averages 24 appearances per year over the last 5 seasons.

Given Liverpool's massive injury problems this season, and issues with persistently injury prone players (Agger, Sturridge etc) it's utter negligence to even contemplate signing Vermaelen, let alone make an official bid for him.

Vermaelen - described by Luis Enrique as a 'top-class' player - is rarely fit enough to play consecutive games, so it's not even worth having him as a stop-gap squad option; the Reds are better off just keeping Steven Caulker.
