Done Deal: Liverpool confirm agreement for 'fantastic' playmaker who rejected Barcelona and idolises 'Alonso'

With only two months of the season remaining, Academy players like Jordan Rossiter, and Jerome Sinclair are still waiting for new long-term contracts, but that's not the case for 'fantastic' midfielder Pedro Chirivella, who is all set for an extended stay at Anfield.

Earlier today, Liverpool posted following statement on the club's official website:

"Pedro Chirivella has today committed his future to the club by signing a new contract at Melwood".

Chirivella has made four appearances for the Reds this year, and after signing his new deal, the 18-year-old enthused:

“It feels really good. I have worked really hard in the last year. I’m very proud to sign a new contract with one of the best teams in Europe.".

Some info about Chirivella:

* Jun 2011: Rejected the chance to sign for Barcelona.

* Jun 2013: When asked about role models, Chirivella mused: "Busquets & Alonso are my favourite players. Different, but best in their position. They are the two I admire"

* Mar 2016: Revealed that Klopp has instructed him to improve in one specific area: "He [Klopp] has told me to improve without the ball, that with the ball I am a really good player but I need to concentrate and focus without the ball. Hopefully I can do it".

* Mar 2016: On settling into the first-team squad: "Lucas has been the biggest help for me, he has been brilliant. Every day he has new advice for me".

Chirivella delivered a composed, mature performance in the recent FA Cup defeat to West Ham, and that performance may have convinced Klopp to hand the Chilean a new contract.

It's good to see the club taking steps to secure top young players, but like the rest of the Liverpool's academy players, Chirivella's season is probably over. Over the last month, Klopp has sh*tcanned all the academy players from the squad, and with some important games coming up, it's doubtful they'll be recalled before the end of the season.

Can Chirivella kick on next season, or is there too much competition in the squad?
