To many Reds fans, new Liverpool signing Joel Matip [Reportedly offered £50k-a-week by LFC] is a bit of an unknown quantity, but according to Anfield legend Jan Molby, Jurgen Klopp's decision to sign the Cameroon international could pay dividends next season.
In his column for the Liverpool Echo today, Molby enthused:
"I've seen Matip play several times. He is a big, strong, and very composed, and [playing] so many games in the demanding Bundesliga will serve him well in the Premier League".
Molby's assessment conflicts with Sky Sports' German football expert Kristian Sommer, who claims:
"Matip lacks physical presence and isn't that strong. His major weakness is he's not the quickest, but he always made that up because of excellent positioning".
Some other views on Matip from Sky Sports Germany reporters Torben Hoffmann and Dirk große Schlarmann:
* Hoffman: "He [Matip] not currently at the level of Hummels, Boateng, or Badstuber, but after these top guys he's in the next group".
* Schlarmann: "Matip is a conservative guy, not known for talking much. This season he reached another stage in his development and moved into the top 10 defenders in the Bundesliga".
Interesting. It appears that Klopp's solution to Liverpool's defensive woes is to sign a second-tier defender who is not amongst the very best in the Bundesliga. I'm just glad the manager has fixed the long-standing problem of having quiet, 'conservative' players at the heart of Liverpool's defence.
Oh, wait...
