Dump Him: Ex-Red urges Liverpool to replace Emre Can with £76k-a-week 'colossus' for Man City final

In his pre-match press conference today, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp admitted that he has 'difficult' decisions to make for Sunday's League Cup final, and acknowledged that several players are destined to feel 'disappointed' with his selections. Competition is particularly intense in midfield, and according to ex-Red Neil Mellor, Klopp needs to make a big change in that area of the field.

Speaking to reporters today, Klopp noted:

"This is the first time there's been an issue with too many players [and] a few will be disappointed by the decisions".

In his column for the Liverpool Echo today, Mellor argued that the allegedly Emre Can should be one of the players 'disappointed' by Klopp's team selection. He explained:

"Tough as it would be on [Can] to miss out, I feel he [Lucas] can do an important job in front of the back four with his experience and know how. If David Silva is given a central role, Lucas may be a better option to quell that threat".

You won't hear any argument from me! With his positional discipline, and ability to keep it simple, Lucas^ is the manifestly superior defensive midfielder, and given Man City's attacking riches, Lucas - described recently by Jamie Carragher as a 'colossus' - will provide much-needed solidity in front of Liverpool's often shaky back four.

That said, it's probably more likely that Lucas will start at centre-back, with Can in midfield with Henderson and Milner. That'll be harsh on Kolo Toure, but the the Reds have kept two clean sheets with the Brazilian at the back, and he's proving to be an effective option.

Both Lucas and Can played in Liverpool's 4-1 demolition of City earlier in the season, so there's a strong chance that both will feature again. That said, Henderson was injured for that game, and he's a nailed-on starter for Sunday.

If Klopp goes with Sakho and Toure in defence, and Coutinho/Firmino/Sturridge up-front, one of either Milner, Lucas, Can, or Hendo is inevitably going to miss out.

Who will get the chop?
