He's back! 'Amazing' Daniel Sturridge scored against Aston Villa on his return to action today, and underlined yet again his importance to Liverpool FC. When fully fit, Sturridge is undoubtedly Liverpool's most effective attacking player, but according to Reds boss Jurgen Klopp, the £25m-rated striker is one of the best players he's ever worked with.
When asked about Sturridge on Friday, Klopp raved:
"It’s really normal that everybody is asking about Daniel. He is one of the most talented players I have ever seen, for sure".
One of the great things about Sturridge is that he rarely needs a lot of time to get back back up to speed after injury.
He showed that once again with his goal at Villa, which proved to be the catalyst for the 6-0 victory.
The question is, did Sturridge make it through the game unscathed? Obviously, I hope so, but given his injury history, another injury recurrence is inevitable at some point.
Whatever Sturridge's state of fitness this week, Klopp will hopefully do the responsible thing and rest him for Thursday's Europa League game with Augsburg.
For once, Liverpool have enough attacking players available to cover Sturridge's absence, and there's no sense in risking him any more than is necessary.
If Sturridge sits out Augsburg, that gives him 11 days of potential recovery time before the second leg, and in my view, that's the most sensible approach to take.
