Confirmed Liverpool Team: 'Spectacular' star returns; £20m midfielder dropped; controversy as Klopp dumps Brannagan/Flanno

Utterly predictable. As expected, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has reverted to type with his line-up for tonight's Premier League clash with Leicester City, and once again, in-form Joe Allen misses out on a place in the starting XI.

FULL TEAM: Mignolet, Clyne, Lovren, Sakho, Moreno, Can, Henderson, Lucas, Lallana, Milner, Firmino.

SUBS: Ward, Toure, Benteke, Allen^, Ibe, Flanagan, Teixeira.

LEICESTER: Schmeichel; Simpson, Morgan (c), Huth, Fuchs; Albrighton, Kanté, Drinkwater, Mahrez; Okazaki, Vardy.

* Allen's omission makes a mockery of Klopp's weekend claim that Allen is a 'first-team player'. If that's true, and there's a merit system in place, why isn't he in the starting line-up tonight?

* I argued yesterday that actions speak louder than words, and in this case, Klopp's actions (i.e. omitting Allen again in the league), speak louder than his disingenuous contention that is an 'important' first-teamer.

* Brannagan doesn't even make the match-day squad? What a poke in the eye for the young midfielder, who - like Teixeira - put in an impressive performance against West Ham.

* Brannagan's omission is a prime example of why I constantly condemn Liverpool's treatment of young players. How is dropping him conducive to effective motivation? What happened to rewarding young players for showing their ability?

* Steven Caulker also dropped? Mind boggling. That said, it could just be down to the fact he's played so much this season and needs a rest. Oh, wait...

* Still, Lovren partners the allegedly 'spectacular' Sakho, and this - according to some fans - is Liverpool best defensive partnership.

* This team has practically zero width/pace, and no one capable of consistently taking a decent set-piece. That said, this team is still good enough to beat Leicester, and if the players are on song, three points is a possibility.
