The Mamadou Sakho-Roma rumours just keep on coming, and with the transfer window opening in less than a month, new reports suggest that the France defender still wants out of Liverpool
In November, Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport claimed:
* Roma will try and sign Sakho during the January transfer window.
* Sakho is worried about his place in the national team, and wants to 'play regularly'.
Prior to that, France boss Didier Deschamps had already publicly advised Sakho to quit Anfield, and earlier today, Sky Sports reported:
* Roma have 'enquired about Sakho's availability' ahead of a January swoop.
* Sakho is 'keen on a move away from Anfield' in order to cement his place at Euro 2016.
Right now, a transfer seems inconceivable. Liverpool recently extended Sakho's contract, and under Jurgen Klopp - who recently hailed labelled him 'spectacular' - Sakho is (when fit) everpresent in the team.
Additionally, with Lovren now injured, Sakho is poised to regain his place in the team, and if he performs well, then he'll almost certainly keep the Croatian out of the first XI.
That said, a transfer is not beyond the realm of possibility. Contracts are not worth the paper they're printed on these days, and oftentimes, signing a new deal is simply a ploy to maximise a player's sell-on value.
Sakho is an effective player for Liverpool this season, but with five injuries since 2013 (229 days on the sidelines/46 games missed), he is far too injury-prone.
Sakho may also see the writing on the wall. Liverpool are continuously linked with Dortmund duo Mats Hummels and Neven Subotic, and it's an absolute guarantee that Klopp will sign a central defender at some point.
There's no smoke without fire, and the Roma rumours have popped up regularly for almost a year now. Perhaps Sakho is unwilling to gamble his international future on Lovren getting regularly injured and/or Klopp failing to bring in another central defender?
