Confirmed Liverpool Team: £59m-duo dropped; two surprise starts; 'amazing' attacker finally returns, but for how long?

In his pre-match press conference, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp promised to play his 'strongest team' for tonight's League Cup clash with Southampton. Has he followed through with that plan?

In my view, absolutely not!

FULL TEAM: Bogdan, Randall, Skrtel, Lovren, Moreno, Can, Lucas, Allen, Lallana, Origi, Sturridge

SUBS: Mignolet, Smith, Milner, Benteke, Firmino, Henderson, Ibe

SOUTHAMPTON: Stekelenburg, Cedric, van Dijk, Caulker, Bertrand, Clasie, Wanyama, Davis, Mane, Tadic, Pelle

* Clyne is rested, and after playing more minutes that anyone so far this season, that's probably a good thing.

* Can and Lallana make the starting XI again? Can had a decent game against Swansea, so I can understand his inclusion, but Lallana is a passenger for Liverpool, and no amount of biased fan spin will can change that reality. Coutinho is out again, so Klopp's hand has been forced.

* Benteke and Firmino both had poor games against Swansea, so it makes sense to leave them out of the starting lineup.

* Sturridge starts the game, and it'll be interesting to see how long he lasts. Given his superb goal-record for Liverpool, though, there's a very strong chance he'll score.

* It looks like Origi will play out wide behind Sturridge, which is probably a more effective position for him.

Probable Formation:

-------------- Bogdan
Randall - Skrtel -- Lovren ---- Moreno
------- Can -- Lucas --- Allen
-------- Lallana - Origi
------------ Sturridge
