And so it begins: Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has named his first starting XI, and there's an immediate surprise, with Daniel Sturridge not included in the squad, which can only mean one thing: he must be injured and/or unfit once again.
FULL TEAM: Mignolet, Clyne, Skrtel, Sakho, Moreno, Can, Lucas, Milner, Lallana, Coutinho, Origi
SUBS: Bogdan, Toure, Allen, Ibe, Sinclair, Teixeira, Randall
SPURS: Walker, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Rose; Alli, Dembele; Chadli, Eriksen, Lamela; Kane
* Why is Sturridge not in the matchday squad? There's no reason to leave him out, especially after two full weeks of recovery time after the Everton game. Either he's injured, or he's done something to warrant being dumped from the squad.
* On Thursday, Klopp told reporters: “Firmino could play as a striker. In this moment – for the next game – we have Daniel for the position and we have Origi". Something clearly happened between Thursday and now, and my money is on yet another injury.
* If Sturridge is injured again, then serious questions need to be asked about his long-term future. If he can't stay fit for 3-4 games in a row, then it's a major problem, especially if he's sustained another injury during training.
* UPDATE: The Liverpool Echo claims: "Sturridge has minor knee problem. Travelled down to London with the Liverpool squad on Friday but decision was taken this morning not to risk him".
* As for the lineup - pretty standard stuff; Klopp has named three central midfielders in his XI, and if he goes with a 4231, it opens up the possibility that one of either Milner or Can will part of the attacking front three.
* Possible formations:
-------------- Mignolet
Clyne ---- Skrtel -- Sakho ------ Moreno
------------ Can --- Lucas
---- Milner - Coutinho --- Lallana
-------------- Origi
OR:
-------------- Mignolet
Clyne ---- Skrtel -- Sakho ------ Moreno
------------ Can --- Lucas
---- Lallana - Milner -- Coutinho
-------------- Origi
* Great to see Teixeira on the bench; hopefully, he'l get on the pitch for the first time this season.
