Backstabbed? 'Outstanding' £200k-a-week pariah disses Liverpool again by (indirectly) suggesting that the club lacks 'quality' players

Rejoice! It's finally over: shameless mercenary Raheem Sterling is (thankfully) no longer a Liverpool player, but after constantly disrespecting the Reds over the last six months - including tacitly condoning his Agent's disgraceful comments about the club - The Mercenary has shown his classlessness once again by having one final dig at Liverpool.

After being unveiled by City, Sterling - who will cost £44m (with £5m worth of add-ons) indirectly dissed the quality of Liverpool's squad. He told Man City's official website:

"The thing that excites me the most is the world-class squad we have and knowing we have a team that is capable of winning things. The more quality players that are around you, the more quality it brings out in you"

Ouch. To anyone who doesn't have their head permanently buried in the sand, Sterling is obviously dissing Liverpool here by suggesting that:

* The Reds have no world-class players in the squad.

* His development at Anfield was stunted due to the lack of 'quality' players in the squad.

* Liverpool is not capable of 'winning things'.

In his interview, Sterling perfunctorily thanked Rodgers, Benitez, and Dalglish, but he failed to thank any of his former team-mates for helping with his development, which is shabby considering the public support he's received from several of Liverpool's players.

This is par for the course, though. Sterling - hailed as 'outstanding' by Manuel Pellegrini - has proven once again that he is as ungrateful as he is arrogant, but as loathe as I am to admit this:

* Liverpool have no players who are even remotely close to being world-class.

* Recent history proves that the Reds are, in fact, incapable of winning trophies and/or even mounting a serious challenge for a trophy.

The club does, however, have a number of 'quality' players, and the likes of Henderson, Sturridge, Coutinho (and Gerrard/Suarez before them) have played a huge part in making Sterling into the player he is today.

From an ambition point of view, Sterling's desire to leave is understandable, but I don't for one minute believe that winning trophies is The Mercenary's primary reason for quitting Anfield.

The sickening (and undeserved) £200k-a-week salary he'll receive from City is (IMO) the main motivator, and City are stupid to pay a 21-year old such an obscene amount of money. With that cash coming in, where is the motivation to bust a gut and improve?

If Sterling struggles to retain a first-team place, and drops off the radar, he's still laughing all the way to the bank, so why should he care?

In any event, The Mercenary is Man City's problem now, and I have no doubt that he will crash and burn at the Etihad.

On a related note: the terse brevity of Liverpool's news story announcing Sterling's departure is highly amusing:

"Liverpool Football Club can confirm Raheem Sterling has completed a transfer to Manchester City. The 20-year-old departs Anfield after 129 appearances and 23 goals for the Reds. Liverpool FC wishes Raheem well".

After such rank unprofessionalism, this is all that Sterling deserves, really.

The Mercenary's bridges are burned at Anfield. You reap what you sow, and Sterling will forever be remembered (negatively) for the way he disrespected the club.

  1. Have to say, that as humorous as agreeing and sharing your view of Sterling as some kind of knife wielding, narcissistic, serial killing mercantile maniac would be. I actually think, all he's done his make a genuine comment about his new Club and to suggest there's any veiled and cryptic meaning aimed at ourselves is verging on a slightly unhealthy paranoia, which really renders what could be a reasonable article pretty much null and void, all IMO of course.

    ReplyDelete
  2. You have your view, I have mine. Whether people see it as 'unhealthy paranoia' is largely irrelevant.

  3. Sterling is expecting a response to this out landish remark, guess what Sterling, we don't care what you think as we will all be watching you sit on the bench next season, let's see how you will like that hahahaha, YNWA

  4. Jamie, world class players do not just grow on trees they grow from young talented players and Liverpool have quite a few. We have a few gems that in a little time can flourish into great players. Just watch. Gerrard was aging (although great! had to say that before I get hit on!) Suarez bit his way to Barcelona and we had no chance of keeping him. Sturridge sadly did not fill the void due to injury and let us not mention the BBL. We have lost players in the past and replaced them. Keegan for Dalglish for example. There is an abundance of talent in our squad and Sterling..... well he can ask Michael Owen about an ECL medal.

I tend to agree, Sterling has to say something to please his new fans which will always leave a bitter taste in the mouth of his previous club. There is no point in anyone getting worked up about it now.

I am just looking forward to Skrtel's leg breaker on him next season XD

  6. He's left our club (finally) and so I really couldn't care less what he has to say now. From his point of view he has been dissed left, right and centre throughout this saga (sometimes rightly, sometimes wrongly) but please can we all just move on and concentrate on the players at LFC who want to play for LFC. Too much has already been written about Sterling and frankly I really have no interest in him or his comments anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Funny you should write that! I think the same and believe most honest Liverpool supporters do as well. Who was Sterling? Did he help us win anything to be proud of?

  8. People’s perceptions are very much personal. How one perceives
the information available and relays it, will no doubt be an opinion that
others may or may not agree, however it is his opinion, and due to the
circumstances surrounding it, I as others (may or may not) too will choose to
agree with as it serves as some form of closure, and for me; makes me feel
better about letting go. and being more able to concentrate on the future… (in
    a twisted way…)

  9. No one would begrudge him the move. Rightly fans are annoyed with the way he has gone about it. It is true however that LFC need to buy quality else players will not feel the clubs ambition. If any of us were LFC players, how enthusiastic would we have been about last seasons signings?

  10. This is true, but I'll also add the term 'witch hunt' into the mix for good measure, acknowledging it's relevance to the bigger picture of course.
As I've read the article further there's plenty of debate worthy material (again IMO, I'm not arrogant to the point of believing I have any divine right to quantify such or would even get it anymore right than anyone else if I did) I just feel it unfortunate that the anti-Sterling rhetoric has to be wheeled out again as the prologue.

  11. Lucas's recent statement suggests the players are happy that he's gone too. Comments were as cold as nice guy like Lucas could be imo...

    ReplyDelete
  12. Now that was worth laughing at. I hope he doesn't break his leg though I wish that on no one!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Totally agree I think the players were probably as sick of his attitude as us fans are. I'm sure they will also have heard his comments about 'quality' players...bit of a stab in the back for his ex team mates more than anything.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Totally agree Wayne, it's all just a game of cat and opinion.
Mine being that the more dignified way of closing the book is to say to Sterling thanks, good luck and YNWA. Otherwise we are only lowering ourselves to a level closer to his agents.
Of course I totally respect others opinions and hope all I've done is voice my own :)

    ReplyDelete
  15. To me the BIGGEST insult to LFC was thanking his agent for making the transfer happen !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No thanks to the LFC players or fans ? makes you think ?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Do we not have any quality then? Get the cheque book out then! Forget the game yesterday which showed some of our talent on the first kick about on tour!

    ReplyDelete
  17. It's just vindication for Aidy Ward too that his "tactics" work. He knows he's ruining Raheem's career, but he seems to be brainwashed into thinking he's doing the right thing.

The first thing Agger did to Torres in Chelsea's first game against Liverpool after that transfer was elbow him in the face. I want Skrtel to go one better and hopefully break his nose, wipe that smug look off his face :) other than that I couldn't care less about the whole situation.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hey, at least Lovren can make a terrible tackle and blame it all on his poor ability ;)

    ReplyDelete
  20. Lets be honest after all that was said and done did you really expect him to thank the fans. Rightly or wrongly, some LFC fans (IMO) way overstepped the mark...racial abuse etc. I'm not surprised one bit there was no mention of the fans.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yes Sterling, Man City have so many quality players that you would have to spend most of the time on their bench. There you can comtemplate you will be following in the footsteps of other overrated English players at Man City: Shaun Wright-Phillips, Scott Sinclair and Jack Rodwell.

    ReplyDelete
  22. actually, i expected far worse, and was even hoping for it. i feel that the worse he behaves, the better i feel about him being gone...

    ReplyDelete
  23. For that alone, Agger deserved a lifetime contract at Liverpool Football Club.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Can't wait for someone to put boots through the ball on him. The arrogant deserve a Carra on Nani tackle.

    ReplyDelete
  25. One of the things I like about Lucas is that he's a nice guy but has a mean streak, evidenced by his willingness to put the boot in when one of our players gets minced by an opponent.

    ReplyDelete
  26. If that's what he meant, he is absolutely right. We have far too many average Joe's on the pitch and a barely average Joe in the dug-out

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm not sure we will have that many average Joe's on the pitch this year, maybe a couple but a significant reduction on last year. When you think about it though City aren't exactly blessed with too many world class players. If you ask me they probably have 2 in Aguero and Silva, you make a case for Hart and then IMO 2 ex world class players in Toure and Kompany. Other than that they have a fair share of average Joe's too.

  28. Runt? ('the arrogant')

Haha this is very true! He would probably do it too as a way to try and win some popularity points at anfield. Call me mad I'm predicting lovren to have a decent season to be fair.

I have no problem with him doing what he feels is best for his career. That is every individual's right. I have a huge problem with the comments and tactics he used to engineer his move away from LFC as it was totally unnecessary. Be a man and handle your business like a man. He didn't and LFC fans have every right to despise him forever. Man City just added a huge mess to their squad and spent a huge amount of money to bring this mess to their club. If a miracle happens and he learns to kick a ball and becomes the player he thinks he is already, then in 2-3 years time Man City will be going through this same situation as he will want to move to real madrid or Barcelona. On the other hand, if he doesn't perform, then they wasted a lot of money on "potential" so I feel it was a bad move either way. He has no sense of loyalty and that won't change when man city exit the cl early yet again. I do not see him on the bench for the first half of the season as they cannot justify this cash outlay on a benchwarmer. They will give him more than his fair chance because they are forced into it by his purchase price. He played terrible under pressure and the weight of his actions at the end of last season and I feel the pressure is even greater now so I expect him to buckle yet again. I hope these articles and discussions go away quickly as LFC and fans need to move on. YNWA

  31. I don't see what the witch hunt is all about, yeah sterling made mistakes and should of handled his transfer away from club better but he's young,
    greedy and ambitous.

I love our club to death but our club keeps selling our best players and replacing the with dead wood average players instead.

In two seasons we have lost the class quality of Reina, Agger, Suarez, Gerrard and Sterling.

And have Mignolet, Balotelli, lambert, Can, Lallana, Markovic, Milner who are now in their place

Lallana is top class player, Milner is a good signing but average at best. Lovren is a top class centre back but with no cover in front if him, no Mobile Tough tackling DM in front of him game in game out and the fact our left back can't defend and thinks he is left winger ( A Moreno) that left Lovren exposed numerous times all season.

When Lovren has a Lars Bender, Matic, Schneiderlin, Wanyama, Mascherano type player in front if him week in week out and a left back who is good defender and is primarily defensive and then offensive when he needs to be then we will see the best of D Lovren.

We have too many dead wood average players in our squad and only three to four players who are top class and in the next two to three years of playing consistently well to a too level they may become world class:

    P Coutinho

    A Lallana

    Firmino

No one else in whole squad is on those three players ability, class or quality

And sterling saying man city are full with world class players is truth, he is just stating fact. Whether us fans want to hear it, he is young and mouthy. He did not need to say that , but he did.

But what he is saying is the truth so the witch hunt should be over now, we got £49m , £40m to club, £9m to QPR. For a player the club got for £500,000 is not bad at all

    ReplyDelete
  32. My money is on us to finish above Man city and inside the top 4. That would be just perfect. We may not have individuals like city but I feel this year we have a team and with a touch of siege mentality we can surprise a few doubters

    ReplyDelete
  33. Well he's not wrong, we don't have world class players in our team.

    ReplyDelete
  34. He's getting the abuse he is because of the terrible way he and his agent have acted. I can't think of anyone who has left the club who has acted with so little class. He turned down a fantastic wage offer, he did a ridiculous interview without permission, he refused to go on tour and in the end threw a sickie to get his own way. The lack of professionalism is amazing. All this to a club that made him what he is today. Players leave all the time, it's part of football but are we so out of order to expect a little bit of gratitude to a club and fans that have supported him through his ridiculous antics over the last couple of years? I don't think so. I think he deserves every bit of abuse he's getting and will continue to get because he is everything that is wrong about the modern game.

    ReplyDelete
  35. 11/4 currently, worth doing now before we sign Lacazette ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Agree with where he went wrong but really grown men hurling personal insults (not including you in that group) at a twenty year old seems a bit wrong to me.
Better IMO to take the higher ground and leave him to his own devices while we worry about ours.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Who really cares? Isn't this just the sort of classless thing players and managers do when trying to ingratiate themselves on the new fans......

Sterling generally leaves with the blessing of Liverpool supporters because.....well.... he can be replaced... and quite easily at that. With Torres and Suarez the temperature was raised to boiling point because fans recognised they were genuine world class. I think the compensation received from Man city is a fitting description because however badly the kid was alleged to have behaved, the worst he did was exercise his rights that existed within contract law. We have been more than compensated! For £49mill I will also forgive all of his future crimes against us and revoke any future red or Yellow cards he may receive in future fixtures between us and them.

I wish him the best and actually believe him to be very smart cashing in on his popularity. This country loves a an 18-20 year old. The media and fans seem to lap up the next generation and hail them as saviours but as Jack Wilshire has found at 23 until his recent resurgence the pressure is then on to build on the initial hype with drastic improvement in end product. I believe Sterling will be in the same category as Wilshire BUT minus the resurgence. I can't see him impacting the game any greater than Aaron Lennon when he burst onto the scene in a blaze....the little whippet is now hoping on a contract at Everton, He too should have cashed in on his limited ability while the going was good and he was in that 18-20 age bracket.

    ReplyDelete
  39. You wish him the best because you have more class than some... This being football and not a marriage after all....

    ReplyDelete
  40. Not a bad shout... Some people would just say I'm deluded fan 😒.. He would really help push us up the league

    ReplyDelete
  41. And thanks for the nice slice of change you left us with, appreciated. ta!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Too right, I'd be considering the 28/1 title bet if we managed that particular signing...
...I'll probably make it and the top four one anyway to be honest, in for a penny and all that ;-)

like you say, Its a game. It's like getting your ass kicked on medal of honor and hunting down your killer in real life. Football although treated as a religion or battlefield is far from both. I'm with you there are no traitors only business men. We will do exactly the same to the next team we decide is beneath us financially and status wise when we hand pick their better players.

    ReplyDelete
  44. You have to wonder what the response would be from the sniveling little rascist that threatened his 3 yr old.... I hate this sort of faceless fan hiding behind his keyboard... I hope we find out who t is so we can slap them about abit.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Exactly, and perfect analogy.
Now, was it you that shot me in the back of the head the other day?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Reina proved with his last move he was just looking for one last big pay day. He could of been No.1 at so many team top teams but he would of have to of taken a pay cut so instead he moved to BM to keep the bench warm

If I was force to put my money on that prediction I'd be loath to separate with £1.50 of my hard earned cash :)

  48. Anything is possible man. I feel we will have a good season. Last bet I placed on football was for baros to be top scorer in the euros and I won, ha

    ReplyDelete
  49. Going back to Napoli now after playing no part in any of Bayerns league games, but happily showing off his title medal anyway.... Hollow victory... I'd give the medal away in all honesty.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Sorry but the age thing does not wash with me nor does the line "His Agent is behind everything"

He knew what he was doing.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Haha #thestrugle of being a LFC fan. Come on, be positive. 1 more top striker and things are looking up

    ReplyDelete
  52. Yeah, I read LFC are willing to pay whatever the fee is supposed to be... Just hope it's true.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Aging and struggling to sign players, we can finish above em...

    ReplyDelete
  54. It's now 42mill. I would still pay it. If we have someone who can put the ball in the net we will be racing up the league.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I'll split the difference with you

    ReplyDelete
  56. That's the attitude. BR seems a more angry man this year. A lot more stern. People want to take the piss but I hope he has the last laugh

    ReplyDelete
  57. Your absolutely right mate, I've never condoned that sort of thing not even when I've seen the likes of Neville/Ronaldo/Cole, I've never liked it when players go to the touchline to retrieve the ball and seeing grown men hurling abuse at them, they look so pathetic. But in the case of Sterling its left a bitter taste in my mouth, there are ways to move clubs and the way he's acted is not it. If I'm at the city game I'll be cheering every mistake he makes, as hypocritical as that makes me sound.
