With the season now over, it's surely only a matter of time before Liverpool announced the (underwhelming) signing of Burnley star Danny Ings. On Friday, multiple reports claimed that deal for Ings is almost done, and ex-Red Jamie Redknapp is convinced that the transfer will go through this summer.
After scoring for Burnley on Sunday, Ings all but confirmed his departure:
"Everybody knows what's going on off the pitch and I wanted to finish my last game here in style"
In his Monday column for the Daily Mail, Redknapp seemed to throw his support behind Liverpool's move for Ings:
"He [Ings] scored goals — not enough to keep Burnley up, but enough to earn him a big move. Can he turn it on consistently for Liverpool, where I expect him to go?"
This follow's Redknapp's rave review earlier in the season, when he tipped Ings to go on to bigger and better things:
“He [Ings] is a fantastic young player. He has the work-rate, technique and the temperament to became a top player"
Brendan Rodgers is also a fan. In an interview with TalkSport last week, Rodgers was asked the following question:
"Are you still in interested in Danny Ings?"
LFC's boss hesitated for a good ten seconds before answering, and then offered the following response:
"He's a terrific young player, Danny. There's no doubt he's done really well for Burnley. For us, there will be a number of options and possibilities that we will look at"
I can see the positives of this deal: cheap [£5m]; Premier League proven; no real financial risk etc. However, I just can't get excited about ings.
Lambert was also cheap, and Premier League proven (and more experienced), but he has utterly failed to make a significant impact.
Real Sociedad are also interested, and in my view, Ings is much better off going to Spain. In La Liga, he'll regularly compete against the best players in the world, and the experience will make him a better player.
Plus, with David Moyes in charge, there's a very strong chance that Ings will get regular playing time, which is vital for any player in their early-20s.
At Liverpool, it's highly unlikely that Ings will be the club's number-one striker, especially if - as expected - the Reds spend big this summer on an experienced, top-class goalscorer.
At best, Ings will end up being third-choice striker, behind Sturridge (when fit), and whoever Rodgers brings in.
Plus, he'll have Divock Origi also snapping at his heels, and if he hits the ground running, it could make things even more difficult.
Liverpool is a giant step-up from Burnley, but in career-development terms, it's (arguably) not the best move Ings can make at this stage.

Another 'let's see how it pans out' player. Please no.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for Ings to get here. The English Saurez!
ReplyDeleteWithout the teeth...
ReplyDeletewe need proven quality. i would much rather have Benteke who at least we know has scored against every big team multiple times and is a big game player and has scored goals for his national team. right now i know who we can and cant attract
ReplyDeleteBenteke - £20m
Son Heung Min - £15m
Kolarov - FREE
Konoplyanka - FREE
Ayew - FREE
Khedira - FREE
Pirlo - FREE
----------------------------------Mingolet
Wisdom-------------Skrtel--------------Ilori-------------Kolarov
--------------------Khedira-------Pirlo/Hendo
--------Son Heung Min--------Coutinho--------Konoplyanka
------------------------------------Benteke
sell sterling £40m, rodgers out
Spanish media reporting that Gaitan and Lacazette have agreed to join Liverpool...................................Daily Express punting this now, interesting.
ReplyDeleteSome very good free transfers around.......................Milner is done they say?.
ReplyDeleteThis is a no brainer, Ings if he comes will cost buttons, he is not the same style of player as your comparison. Ings is very mobile compared to the sedentary Lambert ( that is not to say Lambert is poor, he just didn't suit Liverpool's style of play). Also we need competition in attack, if we don't bring an established 20+ striker in, or foreign superstar; then for me Ings, Origi and Sturridge will give us a varied and lively attack.
ReplyDeleteNot sure how Milner will be taking us to the next level. Not even the type of player we require.
ReplyDeleteyep, that should be enough to stay in the premier league
ReplyDeleteMilner and Hendo are very fit plays who can run all day, with Emre Can the ball player........strong.
ReplyDeletegaitan ? don't you mean salvio the player from benifica we were link with ?(maybe that's his nickname or whatever i'm not familiar with portuguese league)
ReplyDeleterumor has it that Khedira is set for Juve switch.
ReplyDeleteMilner is in a team which has Silva, Kompany, Aguero, Yaya, Zabaleta etc.
ReplyDeleteSometimes you just have to say thanks but no thanks.
Both Benfica players............................they say only Gaitan.
ReplyDeletethe english suarez, the welsh xavi gosh we're going to be deadly next season
ReplyDeletebuy Kondogbia for £15m ot Nzonzi for £10m
ReplyDeleteThey will be getting a mighty fine player and they have built a very impressive squad on a shoe string budget.
ReplyDeleteok, unless he had an incredible season the only thing a remember about gaitan is how average he seemed to be when we were link previously, so weird that the rumour come back from nowhere
ReplyDeletePep Guadiola's nephew
ReplyDeleteLacazette is tops.
ReplyDeleteNo doubt but will not be joining LFC.
ReplyDeleteI hope you are right, but I will only believe it when I see them in our shirt.
ReplyDeletekondogbia is playing for a team with better players, better manager and in the champion's league, doubt he'd come especially gor as little as 15M.
ReplyDeleteNzonzi really ? good god thanks god you're not connected to liverpool
We await the outcome.
ReplyDeleteOf course.
ReplyDeleteand the next Mourinho as our manager. Nothing can go wrong surely
ReplyDeleteComedy club!
ReplyDeleteWas probably having trouble unwrapping a stick of gum, and had given his full attention it.
ReplyDeleteto be honest we have needed a defensive strong tall midfielder and Nzonzi definately could suit the role. he is far better than Joe Allen who we play in the same position and gets bullied and contributes zero.
ReplyDeletefor a defensive midfielder, Nzonzi does his role well and is crucial to stokes solidness. he would help shape our team much better thats for sure.
Khedira, Kondogbia, Wanyama, Nzonzi, Imbula one of these players right now can really help us
Now they are reporting it is in fact Salvio and not Gaitan......................................oh well.
ReplyDeleteNzonzi is good for Stoke level but not for top 4.
ReplyDeleteThe fact the Nzonzi is a better DM than Allen don't change that we'd be ridicule all over again in the CL with him in midfield
With Danny Ings joining, hopefully glen Murray from palace and wes brown we should definitely cement our place as a premier league team for the next 10 years. Our ambitions are jus too high. Hopefully Rodgers can pull out the stops and try and sign a marquee signing like bendnter he can guarantee us a goal every 20 games
ReplyDeletewell that's just show the credibility of these kind of news (hopefully Lacazette coming is more reliable)
ReplyDeleteToo right. Jack of all trades, master of none. We need a specialist DM.
ReplyDeletefair point but hes big and strong and doesnt neglect defensive responsibilties. he is focused on defending which is what we need. cover for our back 4. Nzonzi wouldnt be my 1st choice but he is massive and could be the one for us. my 1st choice would be Wanyama because ive seen him in Champions League and PL:action. hes a proven Defensive midfielder. Kondogbia would also be my other 1st choice. second choices would be Nzonzi. lets face it theres not many defensive midfielders out there let alone good ones, so if you dont want to get bullied 6-1 you;ve got to get yourself one.
ReplyDeleteall the top teams have 'NATURAL' defensive midfieders who dont neglect defensive duties and allow other players to attack. Busquets for Barca, Alonso before for Madrid, Schweinsteiger or Gustavo before for Bayern, Vidal for Juve, we also need a defensive midfielder, a natural, not Gerrard and definately not Allen
I wouldn't be surprised if our attack next season consists of Daniel, Origi, Ings, Mario and Sinclair. And probably not too disappointed..
ReplyDeleteI love this club with all My heart and ill continue to do so for the rest of my life.. Bt these signings aren't exactly showing any silver lining for the club.. It hurts me a lot to say this but if we dont do something real quick to address the present problems then our club might slip into mediocrity!! #liverpoolfcforever #YNWA
ReplyDeleteThink Mario will be away. To be honest, I have no problem with Ings taking Borini's place in the squad but we need to sign a finished article, proven striker as well
ReplyDeleteloooool
ReplyDeletehopefully we can buy Bolasie for £50M on left wing, ings up front and Brady from Hull to play right wing. we can sell coutinho to barcelona and play adam lallana in his natural number 10 position. then lets buy tom huddlestone to replace gerrard and partner him with hendo. we might as well just buy back Aly Cissokho from Villa and get Janmaat from Newcastle. then buy Ashley Williams from Swansea and that will complete our team. we will cement our place in the top 10 of the premier league. hopefully we wont get many red cards and can get Financial fair play europa spot.
then we can line-up
---------------------------------------Mingolet
Janmatt--------------Williams-------------Lovren----------Cissokho
-------------------Huddlestone-----------Henderson
Brady-----------------------------Lallana-------------------Bolasie
------------------------------------Ings
the end of the Stevie Gerrard era blessed with Fa Cups, Champions Leagues, Europa Leagues, Carling Cups.....to the start of the Brendan Rodgers era... of pure mediocrity!
I actually think Janmaat would be a decent signing
ReplyDeleteI've read somewhere Man City might try and scupper it if Sterling don't sign for them.
ReplyDeleteSorry to burst the bubble, Salvio and Benefica held talks last week, but yesterday Salvio got injured, needs an op on his cruciate, out for 6 months according to Benifica, second cruciate op.
ReplyDeleteOh that puts JK in a dilemma. Keep sterling or get Milner..........
ReplyDeleteSalvio out for 6 months.
ReplyDeleteIt goes to show how rubbish some (all) of these rumours are, They broke this story AFTER Salvio got injured
ReplyDeleteHe must use Fixident if he is risking chewing gum
ReplyDeleteYes silly season is upon us, another 3 months to go, we will be linked with 50 players.
ReplyDeleteIt will be a bad move for Ings
ReplyDeleteI have a funny feeling Mario is staying... I agree we need a proven striker but there is also a chance that Daniel will stay fit and those others will contribute enough that we actually don't.
ReplyDeleteDon't get our hopes up if it ain't true!!
ReplyDeleteFew days after that actually..
ReplyDeleteAHHAAHAHHAHAHA
ReplyDeleteAt the end of the day would Ings get into Man Uniteds team, arsenals, man city's, Chelsea's ? No so why should we sign him. It's not good enough we are Liverpool not Stoke or Southampton we need to aim higher man
ReplyDeleteHard to see mario contributing to much after what we have seen so far.Would be too big of a risk not to bring in a proven striker and rely on sturridge tho.another Season Like This Would Be disastrous. He'd probably play kolo toured as a lone striker!
ReplyDeleteHopefully not...
ReplyDeleteAs hard as it is to admit we are not at the same level as any of these teams and not playing in the champions league will make it all the more difficult to sign big names.he has to be worth a punt for 5m. ..
ReplyDeleteIf BR is staying we have to rely on him to learn fro his mistakes. And I still think that Mario can contribute as a winger/second striker..
ReplyDeleteMy gran is better than Joe Allen. .
ReplyDeleteAnd besides, Ings probably WOULD make their teams. Maybe not 1st or 2nd choice, but he's about as good as Remy was at QPR, and he's doing fine at Chelsea. If he was our #2/3, I'd say that's pretty okay. The problem is Sturridge can't really be considered our #1 striker if he never plays.
ReplyDeleteThere hasn't been much sign of him learning from his mistakes so far and mario has a long way to go to even merit a place in the squad (is it 1 goal no assist in the league or something ridiculous like that?)saying that if Rodgers stays he'll have my full support but I hope he goes..
ReplyDeleteNo dilemma: I'll take Milner over The Mercenary any day.
ReplyDeleteHe was still a good player before he went to city..
ReplyDeleteI can see Rodgers bringing him and maybe benteke in then using origi out wide t replace sterling . . .im not looking forward to next season atal :(
ReplyDeleteNo there hasn't been much sign of him learning from his mistakes, but if this season doesn't change that, what will.. And if he stays, we must hope he will so I am thinking in that direction..
ReplyDeleteYep, here's hoping!
ReplyDeleteIngs carries less financial risk but what does that count for when a manager has spent over £210m+ on players with very little to show for it? Can £10m, Lambert £4m, Lallana £25m, Markovic £20m, Lovren £20m, Origi £10m, Moreno £12m, Balotelli £16m, Alberto £6.8m, Aspas £7m, Mignolet £10m, Llori £7m, Sakho £18m, Assaidi £2.3m, Yesil £1m, Sturridge £12m, Coutinho £8.5m, Ibe £0.5m............. with the exception of Coutinho, Sturridge and Ibe these numbers look grim some examples of what could have been.......during Rodgers reign with just a fraction of the money spent we could have had Saidio Mane (Southampton) £10m, Bony (Swansea) £12m, Ki Sung Yueng (Swansea) £6m, Victor Wanyama (Southampton) £12m, Benteke (Aston Villa) £10m, Daryl Janmaat (Newcastle) £5m, Debuchy (Newcastle) £5.5m, N'Zonzi (Stoke) £3m, Remy (Newcastle) £2m, Nathan Clyne (Southampton) £2.5m, Bertrand (Southampton) £10m, Jay Rodriguez (Southampton) £6.5m, Charlie Austin (QPR) £4m.......... and still had £100m+ to spend this could have included the likes of Griezmann £26.5m, Otamendi £10.5m, Stones £3.5m, Garay £5,5m and Lloris £11.5m and Kevin Kampl (Dortmund) £10.5m to name a few and we still have change taking away the cost of Sturridge and Coutinho....... So heres another spin on things a starting XI of what could have been if the manager and comitee had a brain! GK Lloris, RB Debuchy, LB Bertrand, CB Garay CB Otamendi DM Wanyama CM Ki Sung Yueng Am Coutinho RW Kampl, LW Griezmann, ST Benteke and we still would have had all the player mentioned in the squad....I know it's number crunching and speculative but this is the difference to spend money wisely and spending like a fool and how much would this team cost to buy now? At least twice the cost! Could the same be said about most of Rodgers and FSG's signings? Not a chance in hell......The current manager and the illogical bunch of fools that pull the strings are clearly failing and that 6-1 drubbing, no trophies and no champions league spot and £210m wasted down the line 3 years later says it all. Rodgers has to go and the board need to change there foolish policies and that starts with the appointment of a manager who knows how to spend money more wisely and Klopp is the man he built a team that beat Real Madrid 4-1 and won leagues, trophies and made the final of the champions league spending far less in his career than Rodgers has spent in 3 and thats a cold hard fact.......
ReplyDeleteYNWA
I agree I think he's staying
ReplyDeleteAnother reason we should dump him! We all know rubber cement is superior to Fixident. The statistics prove as much. FSG out!
ReplyDeleteThe ambition is palpable...Danny Ings....sigh
ReplyDeleteI know I can't contain my excitement.............Yea!!!! :-(
ReplyDeleteImagine approaching Klopp and telling him that move is lined up?....madness
ReplyDelete
