Confirmed Teams: £47m-trio benched; formation change? surprise start for Liverpool's forgotten man

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has made several changes for today's must-win Premier League game with Queens Park Rangers.

FULL TEAM: Mignolet, Can, Skrtel, Lovren, Johnson, Gerrard, Henderson, Lallana, Sterling, Coutinho, Lambert

SUBS: Ward, Toure, Moreno, Lucas, Allen, Ibe, Markovic

* Lucas makes the bench after being out injured with a groin injury.

* Lallana makes his first start in a while. There can be no excuses today; Liverpool need allegedly big players like Lallana to step-up, and he has to make an impact in this game.

* Ditto Lambert, Henderson, Sterling, and Coutinho. All three are struggling for goals right now, and that's one of the main reasons Liverpool's season is suddenly in the toilet.

* Good decision to leave out Ibe; he had an ineffective game against West Brom, and he shouldn't be overplayed.

Given the personnel, it looks like Gerrard in midfield *again*. There's are only two central midfielders in the starting line-up, so Rodgers is clearly sticking with a failing strategy. Unbelievable, really.

It also looks like 442/433, with Can at right back (another mistake IMO):

---------------------- Mignolet

Can ------- Skrtel ------------ Lovren ---------- Johnson

Sterling ---- Gerrard ---- Hendo ------ Coutinho

----------------- Lallana

---------------------- Lambert

OR:

---------------------- Mignolet

Can ------- Skrtel ------------ Lovren ---------- Johnson

---------------Gerrard ---- Hendo

-------------------- Lallana

----------- Sterling ---- Coutinho

------------------- Lambert

I don't see how Liverpool can play 343 unless Sterling or Lallana plays as a wing-back:

---------------------- Mignolet

------ Can ---------- Skrtel ------------ Lovren

Sterling ----- Gerrard ---- Hendo ---- Johnson

--------------- Lallana - Coutinho

------------------- Lambert

Another option:

---------------------- Mignolet

Can ---------- Skrtel -------- Lovren ---- Johnson

-------------------- Hendo

------------ Gerrard ---- Lallana

------------------ Coutinho

------------- Lambert - Sterling

Henderson as a DM is a total waste, though. That said, let's hope it's not this:

---------------------- Mignolet

Can ---------- Skrtel -------- Lovren ---- Johnson

-------------------- Gerrard

------------ Hendo ---- Lallana

------------------ Coutinho

------------- Lambert - Sterling

My prediction: 2-1 Liverpool>

  1. Could be a 4-3-3 with the same back line, gerrard hendo at the CM, Coutinho at AM, Sterling and Lallana at the wings with Lambo down the middle.

Has anyone worked out a strategy for getting through this game sober and/or starting now but still being in charge of ones faculties for the boxing?

  3. Today the "Rodgers out" Banner will be flown.

    Good initiative.

The banner will say it all today.

We missed the league because of his stubbornness against Chelsea and Crystal Palace.

We reached the CL after four long years and yet all he found best for us is "gambling Balotelli for Suarez."

We don't want anymore of such mediocrity!

We are neither the stepping stone of his career nor part of his learning curve!

Win against QPR hardly matters now, particularly if he is to stay.

    GET OUT RODGERS!

  5. Extremely happy with Lambert getting a start.
Of all our strikers that are available I trust him the most, he's reliable and if you play to his strengths he'll score goals. Last season he and lallana played together very often and they were a good duo at Soton, it's a shame they hardly ever played together this season.

I think can is wasted at RB, he should either play as a CB or in midfield. Manquillo should be used as a RB but for some reason he's fallen out of favour with BR...

Why doesn't BR put in some youngstars for the last few games (f.e. Sinclair, Rossiter, Wilson). I mean the season is as good as over, CL is out of grabs and we have nothing to really play for? Give those young boys a chance to play next to a football idol like Steven Gerrard!

    ReplyDelete
  6. I've cracked BR's team selection code.
All name go in a hat and first 11 out play !

    ReplyDelete
  7. I'm sorry, but that banner is a complete embarrassment. It's one thing to criticise BR and call for his sacking, and another to humiliate aout entire fan base.... Utd did if for Moyes and that made their entire club look like a joke. Now they've done it for BR, and we look like hypocrites. I doubt any manager's gonna want to come in now...

  8. Some will say it doesn't matter. I say it does.

    3-0 to Liverpool.

    Migs for the golden glove
Raheem to score one and miss one sitter
BR to pull off Johnson at half time ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  9. So much for all the talk about BR giving the younger players a chance . NO youngster will get a chance !

Johnson , Gerrard and Lambert .All leaving but starting today ,

    ReplyDelete
  10. Good thing Miggy got his name picked. Could've been dicey with Toure in goal.

  11. It's a sad day when Liverpool supporters take their cue from them.

  12. CL is out of grabs, but we still need to play for Europa. Something is better than nothing, and it offers us another route into the CL every season too. Plus, it helps with managing minutes if we want to grow our squad.

there's a big difference between fans and supporters, Liverpool fans and Liverpool supporters both sing "You'll never walk alone" but the SUPPORTERS know the real meaning of the words, THE FANS JUST SAY THEM, shame.

  15. You right no youngers players given a chance i think its all about Rodgers saving his job thats why this team is been selected its a nothing match but if Liverpool lost the pressure on Rodgers to go would mount its up to the owners i like to see DE Boer given a chance have to wait and see

    ReplyDelete
  16. think we will struggle today, good result is we win with that team

    ReplyDelete
  17. Liverpool 2-0 pity none of the boys are getting a run and we are playing a few who are gone.

Cheers for info, hadn't really seen that option, will check it out. Cheers for the other upper too :-)
Lets hope if indeed this ridiculous plane does fly over that the genuine Reds in the crowd make some noise to show their disdain. Doesn't matter what your opinion of BR is, if he leaves it should be handled with some dignity, not harangued out by idiot fans.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Twelve minutes in and this game is so exciting that I forgot it was on, and I've been parked in front of the TV since the build up.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Rodgers has not learnt anything. Johnson as usual finds himself in the squad, 4-3-3 again which has worked so well in the past. More insipid football. Why not give Brannagan, Wilson, Kent or Yesil a chance.

    ReplyDelete
  27. There's are Ace in the right place, ave it!!!!

  28. Oooooo we can score goals after all .... thank goodness for Coutinho - only quality we have left !

  32. Take your head out of your a*** you have good spells and bad spells so times its not all rainbows and butterflies but you stick with your men through thick and thin. It's not been the best of seasons but it happens to some of the very best, he needs support not an excercution. We are Liverpool football club not chelski man city or the SCUM ....YNWA Brendan

    ReplyDelete
  40. Was, surely. And it was a foul too, you can't put your hand on th gk who is on the line..

Whole of ball not over the line? Think they hand balled it other end anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Not surprised by that but still does our reputation no good or brodges confidence. Damaging all round

    ReplyDelete
  44. He would have on that sort of money and "extras" at half time - his agent is a tough negotiator.....

    ReplyDelete
  45. Did it say Brendan stay

    ReplyDelete
  46. Critams surely - see below ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  47. Lets hope he takes Sterling off soon and not Lallana (again) Sterling has not beat a man yet.

Definitely take him off if he's gonna do that.

    ReplyDelete

i hate to say it but the staff and advisers assisting FSG are poor and very slow to react.
The team that look out for prospective managers and the scouting team that is deployed should be blamed for this poor showing and a trophy-less period of 3 year.
i fear they will do any better again

    ReplyDelete
  109. Still, it should've been Sterling out, and Ibe could've played right..

    ReplyDelete
  110. rotchie the red5:36 pm, May 02, 2015

why should their goal have stood? A. there was a foul on our keeper and B. the ball swung out of play even before it even bounced...none of their players complained about it much and some of the players had even stopped playing, and on the site I was watching it on called it "out" before it was even in the net.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  115. Because bicycle kicking tennis balls wasn't his primary role.
He lost it, mentally and physically and wanted to leave.

    ReplyDelete

    Also Come on WBA

    ReplyDelete
  117. totally agree

    ReplyDelete
  118. Sterling has to be the worst finisher in history of football.. I know some may argue he's not but there's no how you could back it up, even from a yard out he misses without any pressure. How he's playing every 90minute is what I will never know .
NOTE: john hartson (bbc5 live ) said he could have put that away with his eyes closed and questioned Sterling worth

    ReplyDelete
  119. Result and performance aside -- what an embarrassing day. All you moronic mouthbreathers with your Rodgers out crap have had your moment now haven't you? I've never seen such small-time nonsense at LFC before. Absolute bloody idiots the lot of you. There's not one of you I have the least respect for. Your standpoint is well represented by the ignorant excuses for football fans that arranged the banner. I am actively ashamed of the lot of you. Totally pathetic.

The only comfort I take is that hardly any of you are scousers or have any meaningful relationship with the club anyway. Just awful.

Also the majority of posters on here who are in the BR out camp (which I'm not) have articulated their arguments in an intelligent way, they are also entitled to take an opposing view to you and I; and that does not make them idiots. The people who displayed that banner today do not represent the true Liverpool supporter and to group them with everyone who wants BR out is just plain wrong, and yes I am a scouser but that doesn't make me a more entitled supporter than one born elsewhere?

  127. If WBA hang on it will be a miracle.Everybody get down on your knees and start praying

    ReplyDelete
  128. That's very generous and sensible Mr. Timp, and if I were anything other than *incandescenet with rage* I'd agree with you. But sometimes you can tell the quality of an argument by the quality of the people who hold it. I want the outers to look at that "protest" from today and see themselves and reflected in it. And to have a little think.

In my opinion the level of commitment someone has to the club, their history of support, their knowledge about football and about Liverpool, *is* important in establishing their credibility. There's a world of difference between the opinion of some casual random who wanders in from the internet, and someone with some seasons under their belt who has a proper commitment to the club and, yes, to the city it represents. At some level that *does* matter, it's got to matter, otherwise it's not really football any more -- it might as well be anything!

    ReplyDelete
  129. With 2 simple wins over West Brom and Hull we now would have been above Man U (If Man U loses to West Brom, which they are at the moment)

So it really is sad that BR gave up on those 2 games as it looked he did, because we could have most likely won a CL spot with the fixtures up ahead for both teams.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Any footballer, especially one who thinks one who thinks he is worth over 100k a week should be able to put away a chance like that.

That is one of the many things I loved about Saurez. His heart might of been at Barc but by god he gave it everything and then some every time he stepped on the pitch with a Liverpool shirt.

    Our final 3 games

    Away to Chelsea

    Away to Stoke

    ReplyDelete
  141. Mind you we are up against Chelsea and as I like to call them, Liverpool-shit-disturbers Crystal Palace. The positive to that is we face them at home, where we have a much better record, whereas Man U face them away, and works a bit more to our liking.

We really need to beat Stoke and Cry, Chelsea draw would be a miracle, but that way I think Man U will drop below us.

    ReplyDelete
  142. Had you led with the first measured paragraph above, I probably would have agreed with your point of view!

    ReplyDelete
  143. I admit, it will be an absolute miracle.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Except BR is not good at that. He constantly makes his personal decisions rather than the best ones, even at crucial times, which has undoubtedly proven costly for us in the past.

    ReplyDelete
  145. No argument there.

    ReplyDelete
  146. True. I had a mate of mine, a Spurs fan really rub it in about losing to Hull & missing out on champions league. He's not talking so much now!

    ReplyDelete
  147. Very True, for me its not so much as Utd losing their games as I can see both Arsenal and Palace getting points as well as Hull actually, its more us winning our games.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Absolutely, the primary task is with us to beat or at least draw Chelsea.

    ReplyDelete
  149. The time for measured discourse is over! The time for rabid ranting has come!

    ReplyDelete
  150. I hope BR watched the WBA-ManU game to see how an underdog could get all the three points. There is only one way to beat Chelsea and that is to PARK the BUS, Brendan please for the love of God, don't attack Chelsea, we should think of getting a penalty from the first minute.

    ReplyDelete
  151. I share the same opinion of you, Suarez plays with all his heart and push others around him while a 19years kid thinks he's bigger than the club.. FSG would be very stupid to give him 100 grand a-week. I would rather give coutinho what he wants

Yep it's definitely a bloody big mountain still but at least the shit-dubs have Pardew at the helm now and I think we do ok against him.
Chelski, god how great would it be to do them at the bridge, no easy task but it's all coming to a head now - could help BR a whole lot too if he can pull the proverbial rabbit from a hat their.

  157. That banner was disgraceful. And whoever funded it deserves to be kicked in the mouth. That shows a lack of class. We're not ManUre scum, or coaches and players deserve better.

  158. I'm against it

  159. Used to be a bus driver and now brought his expertise to the beautiful game . Think he will be buying his keeper a drink or two tonight !

aw stop, we'll have people on here calling for Rogers to be sacked and replaced by pulis next if you are not carefull, pulis is a great motivater with just stop the other team tactics, how many clubs has he managed and how many times has he been sacked, there are loads of managers out there like him, great for a while till the players get tired of listening to motivational speaches and bullyboy tactics.

  168. Brendan will no doubt be LFC's manager next season and I will tell you why ...
When he is summoned by FSG in a few weeks time the conversation will probably go something like this :-
    Brendan .......
" Begorra You see it’s like this JW . We knew it was aways going to be tough losing a world class player like Luis . However we all decided to invest in a young squad for the future even if their lack of experience would cost us in the short term . We had Sturridge who scored 20 goals and had 7 assists last season and Sterling , a rising star who could only get better this season ! Unfortunately Sturridge had all this time out with injuries for most of the season and the younger players took longer than anticipated to adjust to playing for such a great club as LFC and with all these extra matches to play ! II took time for ‘the shirt to fit ‘. Also the gamble WE decided to take on Ballotelli just didn’t pay off … Last season , when I almost won the premiership for you , we were not in European competitions , had fewer games and only had the league to concentrate on . Next season will be the same as last and many of our younger players will have gained the experience and come good. Look how LVG , a much more experienced manager , has also struggled to get up to speed after spending all that money ! I need one more season to see the job through and judge me then . I now need to get rid of the dead wood and buy some experienced key players … mainly a quality striker as our lack of goals this season has let us down badly . If you replace me now the cost will be great not only in money but time as there will be another transitional period and the result could very well be the same . Consolidation is key and you know , at the present time , I am the best man for the job …..."

  169. Henderson should have grabbed the ball off him for the penalty

  170. FSG would be foolish to buy this shit. Unfortunately I don't trust FSG with wise decisions when a team of stupids is guiding them

  171. That's awful. Condolences.

  172. Disgraceful. As someone that lives far away I perceive living near Merseyside to be a privilege for a Liverpool supporter, so it rankles to see people behave like brats.

    ReplyDelete
  173. As you said earlier, not everybody lives up to the name 'supporter'.

    ReplyDelete
  174. That was the type of issue that makes me think twice about BR. Even so, the banner was putrid.

  175. Good that we won, but for entertainment we should really be watching the Super 15. Some glorious rugby today.

  176. Won, United lost and still it means nothing because we peshed away 5 points in the last two games. A season gone and still,Rodgers doesn't know his best 11 because they're all equally poor.

    ReplyDelete
  177. Not seen any confirmation of this on the net.. what's your source?

  178. Bloooody hell. Typical Liverpool. We could easily be in the top 4 right now. United have literally self capitulated but we lost to f***ing hull and drew to WBA. I can not put into words how much that frustrates me.
