Confirmed Teams: £62m trio out; ultra-defensive team? BR springs two big surprises including Sakho and Sterling

As expected, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has dropped Raheem Sterling for today's Premier League game with Stoke City.

FULL TEAM: Mignolet, Can, Skrtel, Sakho, Moreno, Lucas, Allen, Henderson, Gerrard, Lallana, Coutinho

SUBS: Ward, Toure, Lovren, Lambert, Sterling, Ibe, Markovic

* Rodgers is absolutely right to dump Sterling. This is Steven Gerrard's final game in a Liverpool shirt, and it shouldn't be soiled by a shameless mercenary who wants out. Only those who actually want to play for LFC should be in the team.

* Sakho makes a surprise return to the starting line-up, and it's no surprise that Lovren is immediately dumped on the bench. The Croatian had his chance over the last couple of months, and basically blew it.

* Lucas and Allen in the same team? That's a pretty defensive move from Rodgers, and it looks like he's desperate not to lose the game. Still, I'd rather see those two in the team over Sterling, so no complaints from me.

* It's a little surprising to see Ibe on the bench, though, especially after signing a new contract this week.

* Borini and Balotelli fail to make the match day squad yet again. It's surely curtains for those two this summer.

* Markovic makes the bench again after failing to make the squad over the last few games. His debut season is a massive disappointment, but hopefully he'll come good next year.

Steven Gerrard's pre-match comments:

"We want to finish as high up the table as possible. It's been an emotional week, but It's nice for the attention to be back on team and not just myself. I've had a terrific farewell. It's going to be nice to play in front of our away fans and hopefully the Stoke fans will go easy on me as well."

My prediction: 1-1

  1. So Gerrard or Coutinho as striker?

    ReplyDelete
  2. Why is he even on the bench what a joke.

    ReplyDelete
  3. That question should've been asked couple of times already?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Should have been Jerome Sinclair

    ReplyDelete
  5. In other news Skybet has slashed the odds of Klopp becoming the next manager of Liverpool from 5/1 to 2/1 last night.

    Something to cheer up

    ReplyDelete
  6. I have one problem. The mercenary shouldn't be in the squad over Balotelli - reason being one wants to play for LFC again while the other is a mercenary and has openly said he doesn't want to. Lucas and Allen in midfield can only be to advertise Lucas for one last time.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Please, please, please let Stevie score, preferably a trademark 25 yarder...but I'd take a 2 yd scuffer if it was the winner!

Come on Stevie lad : )

    ReplyDelete
  8. I think he lost his rights to that trade mark a while ago after a series of groin issues.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Yeah I felt that the Coutinho experiment was given up too quickly.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Rogers should play every game to win! This team is a joke Allen Lucas & Henderson ???

    ReplyDelete
  11. ...and to think, we had a £14 million deal agreed with Sunderland for Borini...but didn't kick his useless butt out the door, down the stairs and out onto the street where it has been proven to belong.

    Smh.

Wonder how much we'll sell him for now, £7 million?

out thought by tactics Tim this man has lost all credibility imo u can feel the desperation to clinging to his job with this starting 11

  15. No farewell game for balotelli, borini,Johnson maybe it is for the mercenary

    ReplyDelete
  16. 7 central midfielders and 3 defenders. No strikers or wingers. I do not know what to say..

BR is a tactical genius just u wait stoke will only score 2 goals today

sigh idk how we will play today.......

    basically the usual then

    ReplyDelete
  22. I was really looking forward to todays game, but that teamsheet has totally depressed me.

The fact that we don't have any striker worth his place in the team...at Liverpool FC...home of so many great strikers in the past...???

    It's painful, it really is.

On the brightside, maybe Brenny "The Teeth" BS Master Rodgers has been working on something in training and we actually look the most dangerous we have all year...????

    ReplyDelete
  23. What team sheet would you have proffered?

    ReplyDelete
  24. I've often wondered if Borini's decision was more based on earning a higher salary at Liverpool than he would have at Sunderland. I don't have any facts to back that up, just idle speculation.

    ReplyDelete
  25. says who.. that is pretty damn unfair on Borini.

Are you a Chelsea fan in disguise because you sound like one.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm not sure why that's being reported, I've been checking skybet for a few days now and it went to 2/1 on Friday morning.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Says me manc man he knew they werent interested in playing him but stayed anyway you are a bit of a tool or what?:

    ReplyDelete
  28. Say who, were you there in the room with BR and Borini?

Every time that lad has played he has given everything unlike some other players.

If BR wanted him gone I am sure he would of told him that he had zero chance of ever playing and he would of been sold.

    ReplyDelete
  29. No he wasnt wanted he was told geez.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Oh you were there as part of the discussions. Wow, we have somebody who works on behalf of BR here in our midst.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I like it, I like Lallana as 9, so hard working and good movement in behind. Great crossing as well when he drifts wide. Great to see Sakho back isn't it? Pretty sure we'd be 4th if he and Lallana had stayed fit.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Not too bright cant read or what they didnt buy other strikers with the aim of keeping him but it would help if someone taught you to read so you could keep up with the news ya clown.

    ReplyDelete
  33. You've missed the entire point of my post.

The point was, we don't have any LFC standard strikers we can call into the team when our main one is injured.

We just have a bunch of rubbish back-ups, so we've had to play without a striker.

    Doesn't that distress you, too?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Easily fourth if we add Sturridge to the mix.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yeah of course that bothers me. The point i was making is that there is always criticism of the team sheet. I was just honestly asking what you would have preferred.

    ReplyDelete
  36. It's a shame really Johnson and Jones didn't get a last game today. Both haven't been up to their best lately, but they were loyal servants for a very long time.

I also can't see of putting Sterling on the bench.

    ReplyDelete
  37. We've not been far off Arsenal this season imo. Give us Sanchez, Welbeck, and Giroud...

What do you reckon for next season? My feeling is we'll be up there.

    ReplyDelete
  38. if we get some decent players in, we will be right up there. a profilic Striker, a DM, someone to challenge Mignolet and a RB

    ReplyDelete
  39. When you play with no striker you play defense the entire match...with the logical result. This makes me wonder how we have managed to be as high as 5th.

    ReplyDelete
  40. to be fair, at the start of the season the other teams didn't know that Balotelli, Lambert and Borini aren't strikers. It took quite a while for the rest of the league to know that they wont score

    ReplyDelete
  41. Depends of the respective summers. United can go and throw another hundred million at it. Arsenal will likely sign one or two good to great players. The other teams will do what they do but City will likely do the most business aside from United. If we can get our spending spot on then I agree but otherwise the gap is an issue.

Those three players have less injury hit seasons are big as well. Right now I would bite your hand off for fourth.

    ReplyDelete
  42. voice of reason3:26 pm, May 24, 2015

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA what is going on here Brendan Rodgers wow just wow

    ReplyDelete
  43. We concede...Spurs score...this is a bloody nightmare

    ReplyDelete
  44. don't worry, we are on par with where we should to be...

    ReplyDelete
  45. I can see City slipping back as their key players move on. I can see Utd struggling with the Champions league as well. Who are their strikers now?

Oh bloody hell look at this. We should probably shut up with this optimistic talk :)

    ReplyDelete
  46. Tripe has nutritional value. It's just utter.

    ReplyDelete
  47. voice of reason3:28 pm, May 24, 2015

i hope he gets sacked and the other fans and owners see him for the farce he is

    ReplyDelete
  48. Not just utter...complete and utter...

    ReplyDelete
  49. don't give this little Pr*ck a chance to shine now BR, don't make him feel even more important

    ReplyDelete
  50. Well, Rodgers is surely doing everything just right, Can at the right position, Lallana at right position and even the the men guarding the back four in right positions. Shows perfectly on the scoreline. Who needs Klopp?

    ReplyDelete
  51. The retards will be foaming.

    ReplyDelete

  53. Already are mate.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Stoke going for 10

    ReplyDelete
  63. So because you have been found you just insult.. thought so

    ReplyDelete
  64. my god what is happening we are getting humiliated, i m litteraly shocked

    ReplyDelete
  65. I don't even read them anymore. It's weird this site isn't it? There are all the good people like, and then we get some of the overspill from the Echo as well... ;)

    Good knockdown from Can there.

    ReplyDelete
  66. COME on Stoke - FINISH THIS LOT OFF = SIX - NIL

    ReplyDelete
  67. SG' s heart must be breaking. I wouldn't blame him if he subbed out at halftime, went straight to the airport and flew to LA.

    ReplyDelete
  68. You know, I was thinking that last night.

Surely a 6-0 thrashing would change any "keep the teeth" plans they had?

It's that new contract he recently signed that will keep him intact I fear

    ReplyDelete
  69. voice of reason3:32 pm, May 24, 2015

i really do maybe its been on the wall already but this will solidify it imo

  71. Greg - stop insulting other posters. If you're irritated by someone's post, ignore it.

    ReplyDelete

BRs playing for his job he doesnt care what we fans think.... God no Stoke fans ollleeeing in the first half sigh anyway yes sterling will come on second half wait and see

    ReplyDelete
  75. Please stop being needlessly sarcastic towards other posters (as per previous posts in this exchange). Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Last year we were playing the best football in the world. There is absolutely no excuse for such a massive decline in quality of football. Even if you consider all the excuses offered by BR fanboys..we are still a better team than Hull, Crystal Palace, West Brom and Stoke. We should be able to beat them most of the times with our current squad. Emre Can is losing all the confidence playing at right back. There are people coming up with theories like BR wants to develop his defensive side of game by playing him there before eventually moving him to midfield. I haven't seen such a deluded fans before. I don't know of any reason for such a massive dip in form in last 10 games. BR has to pay for it.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Well I am off to sound city then.Holy shit this is bad.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Any credibility you had is gone buddy

    ReplyDelete
  79. need to bring lovren on. Shore things up at the back, far too atattcking this team

    ReplyDelete
  80. Oh really "buddy". Look most people don't know the first thing about football, they just regurgitate what they're told. It's really not important to me what they think.

    ReplyDelete
  81. $hyte apparently

    ReplyDelete
  82. BR needs to be sacked. i have had enough of watching games like this!!!

    ReplyDelete
  83. Sterling it's all your fault for not signing a contract for a sinking ship.

    ReplyDelete
  84. where do we go from here..seriously

    ReplyDelete
  85. I'm not sure why he was dropped after playing well recently.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I don't know why we try to put the ball in the air. Stoke averages about a 5 inch height advantage across the board.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Because we are clueless

    ReplyDelete
  88. In other news, hattrick for Walcott. Swap deal?

    ReplyDelete
  89. This.

    Completely clueless.

The 8th richest club in the world, ripped apart by Palace at home last week...and now this.

    Pitiful.

    ReplyDelete
  90. BR fault for not signing a quality striker he had 65 or so million to do so from suarez sale yet he chose to sign up and coming attacking midfielders...and bolatelli

    ReplyDelete
  91. I am not sure BR even knows his preferred starting XI and preferred formation. No consistency whatsoever

    ReplyDelete
  92. As soon as I saw the line up I new we where xxxxxx, Rogers your a idiot

    ReplyDelete
  93. Lucas and Gerrard need to sort Shawcross out.

    Wait what 4-0?

    ReplyDelete
  94. John Henry - B R will make you broke mate - WORSE SEASON FOR YEARS - and not one silver lining in sight

    ReplyDelete
  95. Don't think he knows what his preferred job is, manager, water boy or kit man

    ReplyDelete
  96. I'm beginning to think, maybe they are competing with Arsenal for the score! :p

    ReplyDelete
  97. SACK SACK SACK SACK SACKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

    ReplyDelete
  98. Holy sh*t. This is a trainwreck. In my entire lifetime, Liverpool have never been 4-0 down at half-time. Rodgers has signed his own death warrant with this game. Still, Sterling has to stay on the bench. Bringing him on will add insult to injury.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Well no strikers in the team we cant score and we cant even defend to save ourselves oh well theres always next season.

    ReplyDelete
  100. PhillyRed YNWA3:43 pm, May 24, 2015

Do we need any further evidence that this team has completely quit on BR?? He is bottling it every possible way. If Steling even gets a minute on the pitch going to lose my mind!

    ReplyDelete
  101. Great farewell to our greatest our player.

    ReplyDelete
  102. 220m spent and 4 nil down, going to finish 7th.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Another reminder: REMAIN CIVIL. I don't care how bad it gets, it's no excuse for insults against players, the manager etc.

good mediating again thumbs up for trying to moderate things

    ReplyDelete
  105. surely fsg will have a change of thought now about BR,,, this is embarrasing

    ReplyDelete
  106. Well I have original wanted him gone, then changed my mind, now however he has to go.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Haha Oh My Thor it's 5.

    ReplyDelete
  108. voice of reason3:44 pm, May 24, 2015

he will bring him on his job is on the line

    ReplyDelete
  109. I am lost for words

    ReplyDelete
  110. 5-0 and that vs Stokes??? they still wanna keep Rodgers at Anfield???!!!!!
What the hell is going on in the back yard of anfield??!!!!!
We just do not recognize that team anymore!!!
no apparent striker, a shaky team, a shaky coach evolving with the mysterious benediction of the owners...
Kenny was axed for much less than the profound mediocrity of Rodgers!!!!
What a pathetic view he offers, clapping his hands at the sideline to pseudo encourage the team!!!! THERE ARE NO REASON TO KEEP FAITH IN SUCH A COACH!!!!

His failure and the fact that the team was shouldered by Stevie and Luis last time is so clear now, HE IS JUST NOT THE ONE TO TAKE LFC FORWARD; Are the owners keeping him because he is a YES Man????

    RODGERS GET OUT!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  111. with insults i agree yet questioning the mgr should be allowed during this depressing period

    ReplyDelete
  112. bull i cant believe it this is the worst ever poor Stevie deserves better than this.

    ReplyDelete
  113. SACK SACK SACK, Jamie your moderating skills better be good!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  114. doesn't matter who he brings on nothing going to change this game

    ReplyDelete
  115. Do we actually have 11 players on the pitch?

    ReplyDelete
  116. Imagine how many goals we'd have conceded if we didn't play with 5 defenders...

    ...15?

    ReplyDelete
  117. Question to your heart's content. Criticism is perfectly fine; just no insults.

    ReplyDelete
  118. What would be the point now. Better to put Sinclair in and see how he moves.

    ReplyDelete
  119. If the owners are still nowhere to be seen, then maybe its the top ownership at fault let alone Rodgers.

    ReplyDelete
  120. BR won't be Liverpool's manager next season. 300% sure.

    ReplyDelete
  121. This team is no longer drinking the Rodgers Kool-Aid

    ReplyDelete
  122. 5-0 and that vs Stokes??? they still wanna keep Rodgers at Anfield???!!!!!

  123. seriously JK i think hes time is up

    ReplyDelete
  124. Our heaviest defeat in history was Record defeat was 1-9 against Birmingham City FC in Second Division, 11 December 1954.

    Could this be beaten?

    ReplyDelete
  125. Exactly! This season is not development for Sterling. Sterling has had to cover for BR's mistakes.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Lost the team completely.

3 years into the reign of "death by football" and we are heading backwards at such a rate of knots we could be bottom half next year,

    ReplyDelete
  127. is anyone defending rodgers???

    ReplyDelete
  128. No, they can't anymore, so they call the rest of us "retards"..

    ReplyDelete
  129. There are people. They will come when everyone calms down.

    ReplyDelete
  130. thaank u as i drown my sorrows

    ReplyDelete
  131. voice of reason3:49 pm, May 24, 2015

sinclair isnt on the bench i think....

    ReplyDelete
  132. The thing is is anyone on the pitch defending the goal

    ReplyDelete
  133. You get what you deserve in football result wise and you deserve to lose if you play bad regardless of who you are.this game shows why players want out no tactics no idea no strikers its almost funny

    ReplyDelete
  134. Spotlight on Steven Gerrard saved BR in the last match. Not today.

    ReplyDelete
  135. i was a solid defender of rodgers but after tnyt im just lost to be honest and shattered

    ReplyDelete
  136. Agreed Jamie - every comment needs to remain civil BUT B R should be sacked immediately after this match = HE IS BRINGING SHAME TO THIS CLUB by his stupid actions and mannerisms

    ReplyDelete
  137. ..I think that's just about holding things together in case BR remains in the job....

...it's all about coping and looking at the brighter side in order not to go completely insane.....

    ReplyDelete
  138. Rodgers obviously deserves criticism as the buck stops with him, but the players (IMO) deserve the most stick. The manager can't do anything about stupid defensive mistakes and atrocious goalkeeping.

    ReplyDelete
  139. The performance is the insult an overwhelming one to the away fans

    ReplyDelete
  140. PhillyRed YNWA3:51 pm, May 24, 2015

Could this embarrassment actually be a good thing? FSG has to realize BR cannot remain with the club. Change has to come from the top at this point. Rodgers and Ayre out!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  141. The players are clearly sending a message to ownership. I'm afraid change is needed. Get Klopp while he's available.

    ReplyDelete
  142. The only brightside to one of the worst perfromances in our illustrious history is, surely now FSG must rid of the bullsheet merchant and give us a proper manager?

    ReplyDelete
  143. Allen Lucas Gerrard in the same team is the epitome of slow

    ReplyDelete
  144. He couldn't do anything for 3 years? Couldn't even sign solid defenders with the money he spent? He is too arrogant to even hire a defensive coach.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Europa League to play for and we concede attacking football from the first whistle. Stoke wasn't fooled a bit. No attack to worry about and it's unleash the hounds.

    ReplyDelete
  146. ...I wonder if they're doing a 'brutus' job on him........their caesar....

    ReplyDelete
  147. I hate losing and theres nothing funny about how bad they are the team that is but the defense is absolutely horrid.

    ReplyDelete
  148. It feels like he lost them, or they entered vacation mode. Very unprofessional. You cannot sack all the players, so the manager has to go

    ReplyDelete
  149. Completely agree whether the players have lost faith in the coach or not it is a disgrace that they could/are putting in a shift like this in front of the fans they should be ashamed of them selves and to do so in a Liverpool shirt.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Will Rogers eat humble pie and play Sterling he's only real attacking threat. You see gents, BRs signings aren't up to it. Lallana, Markovic, Henderson is no Gerrard. We sing the praises of Coutinho who needs a willing runner. For all the bashing Sterling he gives defenders problems the way only a fit Sturridge does. Rodgers is out of his depth, Sterling knows it & won't sign for a team where the influx of tripe has remained a constant for many years.

    ReplyDelete
  151. It's not just todays game though JK...

It's all on Rodgers, he's the manager.

He likes to take the credit, now it's his time to take the blame. All of it.

He's had 3 years, this is what we amount to after three years of his, "work"...?

Give him 3 more years and we'll be relegated.

    ReplyDelete
  152. I agree they can at least show that they care enough to watch the games.

    ReplyDelete
  153. im not trying to pull the wool over anyones eyes but how much do u think this weeks dire straights media shambles has played on our teams minds...has BR been forced to play a team without raheem to prove a point and having said that wouldnt it have been better to play atleast a forward upfront such as lambert

    ReplyDelete
  154. even with Suarez with a defense like that it would not change a thing, as an attacker what do you want to do if every time stoke attack it end in a goal ?

    ReplyDelete
  155. Benitez was never this bad!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  156. ...Regardless, its unfair to point out players for a display like this....

    ...its the whole team......

    ReplyDelete
  157. No but our saviour Ricky Lambert is.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Influx of Tripe good name for a punk band

    ReplyDelete
  159. I disagree he organises defensive patterns and formation ,he selects the captain to lead the team he buys the players to fulfill tactics, Rodgers has clearly lost team its time to thanks for nothing. Like I stated history will look back on Kenny's second go aw an overwhelming success in comparison to Rodgers failure

    ReplyDelete
  160. I dont think he'll be coming back though....

    ReplyDelete
  161. So they opt to be deluded rather than insane.

    ReplyDelete
  162. Attack is the best form of defense. We are toothless and pose no threat.

    ReplyDelete
  163. Holt sh!t. Rodgers your avin a laugh. Suppose it's an embarrassment but also good cos now he might get the boot 150%.

    ReplyDelete
  164. Love it absolutely love it! Raheem my dear boy will have the last laugh. Rodgers OUT! One win in six... Anyone claiming rodgers is a top manager and can take us further is having a laugh. He has clearly lost the dressing room, no one out there is playing for him. What a disgrace to a club of our history! But it's the rodgers way, he have broken every record in the negative sense....three seasons zero titles....first in fifty years... Useless bugger! This result is exactly what we needed to get rid of the blighter ....Klopp IN...and I bet you will hear Raheem singing a different tune.

    ReplyDelete
  165. This team doesn't deserve to have Dire Straits playing in their minds.

    ReplyDelete
  166. hahahahha just saw the score

    ReplyDelete
  167. whats our record premier league defeat

    ReplyDelete
  168. 9-1 to Birmingham

    ReplyDelete
  169. That wasn't prem mate

    ReplyDelete

  171. ..possibly depends how you look at it, we all fu** up, and maybe FSG are willing to overlook stuff, but I'm not them, I don't know what they want....

....sometimes, its like choosing between STD's right.....

  172. They can't, they're just calling us retards now...

  173. The whole idea in signing Lambert was to add presence in games like this

Glad that you're happy we're losing just to prove your point
I posted at the beginning of the week that it appears he's lost the dressing room.
That, rather than the usually outed reasons, is why I said that this performance will be pivotal, and now 5-0 down to Stke, hardly prolific scorers, could mean he has lost the team
    And his job.

  177. It's the players fault.

  178. 5-0 and that vs Stokes??? they still wanna keep Rodgers at Anfield???!!!!!
What is going on in the back yard of anfield??!!!!!
We just do not recognize that team anymore!!!
no apparent striker, a shaky team, a shaky coach evolving with the mysterious benediction of the owners...
Kenny was axed for much less than the profound mediocrity of Rodgers!!!!

His failure and the fact that the team was shouldered by Stevie and Luis last time is so clear now, HE IS JUST NOT THE ONE TO TAKE LFC FORWARD; Are the owners keeping him because he is a YES Man????

  179. Frank Lampard scores as Man City leads. Better farewell for a City Legend ;-)

  180. Oh so it's the whole team. For the past 3 months, I'm sure it's only Sterling who has been held responsible. The majority of fans have no problem with that!

The Foxes are finishing much stronger than we are! Think we could convince Pearson to take the rudder??
