Anfield-bound?: Liverpool chase 'impressive' £25m star given 10-day transfer decision deadline

Over the summer, Liverpool were linked with a £40m double swoop for Southampton stars Adam Lallana and Nathaniel Clyne. Lallana signed for LFC, but Clyne stayed at St. Marys, but new reports (predictably) suggest that Liverpool are once again interested in signing the talented right back.

In November, The Telegraph claimed that Liverpool were 'closely monitoring' £25m-rated Clyne, and according to the Daily Express this weekend:

"Chelsea face competition from Liverpool for Southampton’s England defender Nathaniel Clyne"

Manchester United have also registered their interest in Clyne, and in an interview this week, Koeman provided an update on the player's situation:

"We're still speaking with Clyney and his agent, but of course we have to know in 10 days. He's very happy and of course there is some interest but nobody has really bid for the player"

With only 28 goals conceded in 35 games, Southampton have the second-best defensive record in the Premier League, and Clyne is an important part of the Saints miserly defensive unit.

By Comparison, Liverpool have leaked 38 goals in the same number of games, which illustrates the stark difference in overall defensive quality.

Ex-Red Jamie Redknapp is a fan of Clyne, and in a recent column for Sky Sports, he enthused:

"I’ve been really impressed with him [Clyne] this season. He’s athletic, technically good and he’s showing plenty of promise. He’ll learn an awful lot from Ronald Koeman".

Koeman is also impressed with Clyne, and when asked recently about the defender's form, he told reporters:

"Clyne is one of the best right full-backs that I've had in my teams in the last 15 years. That means a lot because I like to play with offensive right and left full-backs and he has those qualities, he's fast and gives good crosses".

I see no incentive for Clyne to leave Southampton. Historically, Liverpool is a much bigger club, but overall, the Reds have regressed this season, and I doubt many players will want to join a club where managerial change may be imminent possibility.

That aside, £25m for Clyne - which Manchester United are seemingly willing to pay - is a laughably exorbitant transfer fee.

Grossly inflated fees for British players are par for the course these days, though (Luke Shaw anyone?) and as the fees for Lallana (£26m), Downing (£20m), Carroll (£35m), and Allen (£15m) show, Liverpool are not immune to this madness.

As such, it wouldn't surprise me at all see Rodgers - if he stays - pay through the nose for yet another British player, but hopefully, FSG have learned that trusting the manager with huge sums of money is a mistake of epic proportions.

Glen Johnson definitely needs to be replaced, but is £25m+ on Clyne a good deal?

No way. Trippier would be a cheaper English option. Let the Mancs have him for 25M. No more Sot'on players.

  4. What a ridiculous overpriced transfer that would be. Never going to happen , well at least. Wouldn't hope so but with this transfer committee we got anything might be possible.
    Clyne can't defend anyway.

Not happening.. Clyne very close to signing for MU despite one or two stories LFC are nowhere in the picture.
Martin Montoya may happen thought with the season he's had... Let's hope not.
BR has Identified RB and FW as priorities this window.

  6. If we keep going trying to poach from upper-mid-table clubs, we're not going to get better than where we currently are.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Clyne is good no doubt. However, going back to Soton for all our players isn't exactly a good thing. The RB position is one I think we should look abroad for. With Flanno injured, Manquillo out of favor, and Johnson leaving, we are very weak there. Spending big could pay off.

    ReplyDelete
  8. It seems that Martin Montoya has agreed to come to Anfield at the end of this season.
If the reports are to be belived than I think that Montoya is better, cheaper and with more experience than Clyne, wich is not bad at all but we have other areas when we have to spend big...a striker first of all and a replacement for Stivi (a good one not a Balotelli-like one).

    ReplyDelete
  9. He said those two position?

    ReplyDelete
  10. I'd prefer Montoya or Trippier. Clyne is good but very expensive. Rather put that money to Lacazette or Depay.

Our Wingback situation is quite interesting. Flanagan ruled out for another 9 months. Johnson and probably Enrique and Manquillo leaving. That leaves us with only Moreno. I'd keep Manquillo and buy Montoya/Trippier like I said. I would keep Wisdom as a 4th choice in case of injury problems. And fortunately Can can also play as left wingback if needed.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Lfc would pay 28 million for him surely.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Manquillo is on a 2 year loan, so even if we don't option to buy him this year, chances are we'll keep him as backup in light of the Flanagan injury. We can save money, and he might re-assert himself too.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Not the worst thing that could happen. Very balanced player in attack and defense, if a bit unspectacular in both. However, if he comes cheap, it'll allow us a bit more money in other areas of the squad, like say Depay or Nainggolan (not probable, but possible).

  14. The issue we have is that with GJ and SG leaving and possibly RS and RB we will be down on our quoted of home grown players.

I think we'll use this as smokescreen and get Micah Richards. He has disappeared off the radar in Italy and will cost us under 10m I expect. Not bad business.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I would hugely disagree.

Liverpool were past masters of buying players from clubs who were deemed to be lower class then us yet we won title after title.

Consider this. We can not compete with the likes of Man Utd, Chelsea, Man City and Arsenal as well as a host other top European clubs when going head to head trying to sign players.

What we need to do is find good players who can be made better at clubs like Southampton.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Off our current homegrown list, we'll be losing Stevie, Johnson, possibly Lambert, possibly Borini, and possibly Brad Jones. We can count in Flano, Sterling, and Ibe for next year, but it'll take up our squad space. Right now they're u21s which don't count. We need to be careful in this aspect. Probably why we're opening negotiations with Brad Jones.

  19. Right, but we can't be getting them all from the same club all the time. I mean, picking up Lallana, Benteke, and Jaanmat could be good business, but Lallana, Rodriguez, and Clyne would just be turning us into soton with a different name.

  20. Origi got another goal today. He's got 8. Guess how many the LFC top scorer has?

    ReplyDelete
  21. MIght be the post WC pressure that got to him, hope he'll learn from that and won't let Anfield pressure get to him. and 8 out of 36 actualy sounds fine..

    ReplyDelete
  22. We coIps also safe the 10m and keep wisdom instead

    ReplyDelete
  23. Especially as he has been largely on the wing for a poor team.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I don't know if it's the pressure as much as it is "Mignolet syndrome". Once he made the big move, he started thinking waaay too much about the simplest of things. If he just relaxes, gets a good preseason with the squad, and plays his natural game, I think he'll be fine.

  36. Mayweather won by a clear mile. Landed more cleaner shots, you call it running, I call it the art of hitting without being hit. When he did stand toe to toe he dominated the exchanges, out jabbed & countered Paquiao for fun. Manny threw flurries but was hitting arms. Mayweather is a once in a lifetime talent who should be appreciated.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Spot on, Manny wasn't magnanimous in defeat, he actually embarrassed himself.

    ReplyDelete
  38. The fight was never going to live up to the hype.Mayweather is boxings version of Jose Mourinho.Defensive and tactical. His style isn't casual fan friendly.Floyd's very good at making adjustments and like Chelsea he gets the job done without being spectacular offensively.
Loud self promoting boxers usually do their most exciting stuff away from the ring. It's the opponents that makes some of their fights entertaining.Muhammad Ali was the perfect example. He traded against weaker boxers, but when it came to fighting the best like Joe Frazier and George Foreman, he went into ultra defensive mode and covered up on the ropes. The opponent would force the action.Ali hardly exchanged but trash talked them into throwing 1000 ineffective punches. He waited until late in fights when they were energy zapped, then sprang into life.
I think Mayweather is better than Mohammad Ali was defensively. He takes less punishment because he's a moving target against heavy hitters.Floyd has mastered the shoulder roll and covers his chin turtle like in a defensive shell. He also dodges punches with lightening quick upper body reactions and elite foot movement.
His counters and punch accuracy are on another level.Like you said he's a once in a lifetime defensive boxer, but Mayweather will never get the respect his boxing skills deserve.Boxing fans like attack minded fighters and his 'Money Team' nonsense doesn't help.

  39. Well he is the mou. The best manager in the world. League titles in por eng Italy (when he done that celebration)and then Spain. He beat the best team in the world. I'm afraid the same cannot be said about Never won a tea cup Rodgers.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Well he's better than any player in the world (save maybe messi )
So that alone allows him I think

    ReplyDelete
  41. I understand your point.

However, typically speaking, we need to get the best player on the given team, not a host of players from the same team (ala what we did with Southampton last summer).

Like @Not You said, buying a Benteke is one thing. But buying Rodriguez is another.

    ReplyDelete
  42. We'll have to agree to disagree mate... Appreciate if you like. But not for me....Humility is a word that Mayweather has no understanding of....

    ReplyDelete
  43. Perhaps we'll look back in 20years and appreciate him!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Fair enough, different strokes for different folks. Mayweather was far more of a gentleman than Pacquiao was. Manny speech became cringe worthy when he said he thought he was winning and that was why he didn't up the tempo! Not once did he congratulate Floyd. Now it's his shoulder Injury! Anyway, I'm glad I'm not the only fight-footy fan :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Floyd Mayweather and his team conducted themselves correctly.Maybe they were aware this fight would attract a wider audience so Mayweather strategically cooled his usual trash talking behaviour.Pacquiao and Freddy Roach took the pantomime villain roles.Especially in defeat, which was weird.
I'm not interested in watching a rematch. Both fighters should be looking at Kell Brook or Keith Thurman.Floyd also has the Tim Bradley option.A win over him would look nice on Mayweathers boxing CV.

  48. Ali was a heavy weight mate different kettle of fish loved watching Ali not just a great boxer a great man, athlete of the last century says it all.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I don't think it's a different kettle of fish.Heavyweights were/are allowed to box without leaning on the ropes like a trash talking punching bag.Rope-a-dope may have excited you others, but that's not something i liked to watched.
Athlete of the century had more to do with his personality. If Ali was a dull character that was unable to generate media interest, I doubt so many would have him down as the greatest.Sugar Ray Robinson is the best boxer of all time.
Muhammad Ali was far from a great man.He made huge mistakes. In the build up to the Joe Frazier fights, Ali took smack talk to all time lows.Racial tensions were high.Blacks and whites were at the early stages of coexisting in society.Racial slurs were rife and blacks were treated like second class citizens.Mohammad Ali made racial remarks to a fellow black man supporting stereotypical views of how a large majority of whites generally felt about black people at a time when blacks fought for equality. He also tried to isolate JF from the black community.Joe Frazier felt bitter towards Mohammad Ali even when they hung their gloves up, for those reasons.Frazier talked about it in his documentary.
I wasn't around when George Foreman, Frazier and Mohammad Ali fought, but i've watched their fights back.Ali was the best boxer out of the 3.The other two were sluggers. However Ali's defensive tactics were against top fighters was bor8ng to me.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I could never understand why we let him go so easily and so cheap.

For me Babbel was our best right back followed by Rob Jones, both careers ended too early in unfortunate circumstances.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I don't understand reports linking us with Benteke. He is similar to Balotelli and Lambert, who obviously don't suit our style. We need pacy forwards who run into spaces behind defences and stretch their backline

    ReplyDelete
  52. Thank god you are not a referee.

    ReplyDelete
  53. May weather does what he does to sell tickets. He's the bad guy and people pay to see him get beaten.
He didn't need to sell this fight so he kept quiet but he is a businessman and knows what he is doing. Pacquiao went down in my estimations for lying to himself and the watching public.

  54. We need to stay away for overpriced british talent . Who was the last big fee british player to come to us and set the world on fire ? If Rodgers Dodgers does for back to Southampton yet again for another mid table standard player my question to him would be wouldn't it of been simpler to just apply for the Southampton management job. I think Rodgers Dodgers would be well turned on .

    ReplyDelete
  55. the ironic thing is if we decided to give 20 mill Lovren back to Southampton for free , would he get into there starting 11 ? I think not so if we're trying to get a top 4 spot our chances are severely hampered by the fact we have players in our starting 11 that wouldn't even get into some of the teams below us. Lovren had been awful for us so far. When Rodgers buys a defender I don't think hes looking at how great at defending he is . All Ridgers seems to care about is how good his players are at passing and keeping the ball.nothing else matters to him. When we drew 0-0 with WBA recently and Rodgers said after the game we were outstanding said it all really. He should of been sacked there and then

    ReplyDelete
  56. 25 million is a joke. There are RB on the continent, 5 times better for half the fee.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Very true, if it was a lot closer then a rematch makes sense. The truth is Manny is not on Floyd's level. Was it round 10, when Floyd said I'm out boxing him. A fight with Brook wouldn't capture people's imagination, I guess having the ibf belt to fight for is a good enough reason. Personally, I don't think Brook deserves it when you look at who he's fought. I definitely don't want to see khan vs mayweather, but I think it's the likeliest in terms of financial sense, picture a fight in Wembley, but mayweather has stated he'll fight in September which rules out khan (Ramadan etc). Thurman would be intriguing but would Floyd get the recognition for defeating a relative novice, probably not. Which leaves desert storm Bradley.
khan vs brook or khan vs thurman should happen soon.
Last but not least Danny Garcia is really getting under my skin, I thought Peterson won nevertheless he should step up to 147. He won't because of the competition.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Many of Alis tactics where ahead of their time and youve said he was boring yet stated he was athlete of the century for his personality.
Many people have different views as to who is the greatest ever that cannot be answered anyone who has followed boxing knows that.
Getting back to Ali being boring ha you know nothing about him what so ever nobody says that.

    ReplyDelete
  59. People who think this is overpriced need to remember that there has been a massive inflation event in English football. £25m is worth half of what it was a season ago. It's the standard fee for a top 5 team to pay for a player who is expected to take a first team place in any position. Changing times.

It's still too much to pay for Clyne though, the lad can't pass the football properly.

    ReplyDelete
  60. The fight with Mayweather was boring there was only one person coming to fight and that was Pacquio all he did was come get me weak as.
You also contradict yourself calling Ali boring yet saying his personality won him athlete of the century of course thats a joke isnt it if it were judged on personalities Benny Hill would have won.
Ali is the greatest live with it and maybe read his book he was a great advocate for human rights also.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Give that man 150k per week ;)

    ReplyDelete
  62. The only player B Rodgers or A New Manager (Klopp Hopefully) should be signing from Southampton at all costs this summer is M Schneiderlin, M Schneiderlin is the DM we desperately needed in last summer and need in this summer for £20-£25M.
The three right backs that should be shipped out this summer are as follows:
    G Johnson A Wisdom J Manquillo
They need to be replaced by these two right full backs:
M Montoya Of Barcelona for £8-£12M
K Trippier Of Burnley for £4-£6M

    ReplyDelete
  63. That's what Mayweather will be saying to many Manny fans I'm sure...

    ReplyDelete
  64. Angel Garcia is the most annoying person in boxing.I thought Lamont Peterson beat Danny too.He came on very strong towards the end and if he had a few more rounds he probably would've got the stoppage.Danny Garcia shouldn't be unbeaten. He's overhyped.DG goes up to 147 the top guys beat him easily and he struggles against the rest in that quality stacked division.
You're right Funkdoc, Kell Brook has nothing apart from beating Shaun Porter to warrant a Mayweather fight. But stylistically it would be a good match up.
Now Floyd Mayweather as vacated his tiles there are rumbles of a Welterweight tournament.Similar to what they did at Super Middleweight a few years back.I hope it happens.Too many fighters are taking the easy option. This forces them to man up or risk being left in the cold.

    ReplyDelete
  65. You're right, but the point was that we should be going for the best players from mid table clubs, not just a variety of good performers. Benteke was just an example...

    ReplyDelete
  66. I'm hearing rumours of mayweather vs khan. Financially makes the most sense but such an elusive counter punching genius like mayweather would be all to much. Like Pacquiao, Khan sets his feet before throwing flurries, which is only good if you can corner Floyd. Anyway, as stated before nice to know there are other fight-footy fans.

    ReplyDelete
  67. "Getting back to Ali being boring, ha you know nothing about him whatsoever.Nobody says that" Okay Greg whatever you say.Ali was a great the entertainer.Even when he parked himself on the ropes in top fights. It was pure attacking excitement befitting of TBE.
"Mohammad Ali is the greatest, live with it":) Saying Ali is the greatest boxer is subjective not FACT.So i don't have to 'live with anything' but what I believe.Sugar Ray Robinson MY best boxer of all time, but i'm not trying to force feed you my view. That would be path3tic.
Personality played a part in getting Mohammad Ali athlete of the century. He was obviously a great boxer too, but not the best ever in my opinion.Making comparisons with a comedian is stupid:-7
I said Mohammad Ali's defensive tactics against top fighters was bor7ng to watch.Having a larger than life personality is something completely separate. How you found a contradiction in that statement, i will never know.Clutching at straws!
I know Mohammad Ali's life story.Watched his fights and have done my research.
