Done Deal: Liverpool confirm signing of 'versatile' Prem powerhouse on 4-year contract extension. Replace Johnson?

With Glen Johnson almost certainly leaving this summer, and Javier Manquillo failing to make an impact, there's a vacancy in Liverpool's squad for a good right-back, and it appears that Andre Wisdom will be one of the challengers for that role next season.

According to the official Liverpool FC website this week:

"Andre Wisdom has signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool, the club are pleased to announce. The 22-year-old has committed his future to the Reds by penning the new deal".

According to The Guardian:

"Wisdom has committed his future to Anfield until 2019"

In his post-signing interview, Wisdom insisted that signing a new deal 'was an easy decision to make', and vowed to 'challenge for a place' in the first team next season. He added:

"The club are in my heart. This is one of the world's biggest football clubs and it's an honour to be a part of it. now I want to work hard and try to compete for places again."

After Emre Can's horror show against Stoke City, it's surely the end for the German at right back.

Wisdom has experience of playing that role with some distinction for Liverpool, but as a natural centre-half, he'll also fit into Rodgers' new 343 formation.

It's good news for 'versatile' Wisdom, but is it good news for Liverpool? Things didn't go to well during Wisdom's loan spell at West Brom:

* Prior to Alan Irvine's sacking, the 22-year old made 23 starts for the Baggies.

* When Tony Pulis took over, he basically exorcised Wisdom from the squad.

* After January 31st, Wisdom made only TWO substitute appearances for the club, and spent 13 out of 15 games as an unused substitute. Did Pulis make the right decision?

With Wisdom

* Failed to win 17 out of 23 games (74%)
* 10 defeats (43%)
* 33 goals conceded (1.4 per game)
* 8 clean sheets (35% of games)

WITHOUT Wisdom

* Failed to win 8 out of 15 games (53%)
* 5 defeats (33%)
* 16 goals conceded (1.1 per game)
* 8 clean sheets (53% of games)

Given Pulis' dedication to building defensively solid teams, it's a little concerning that he dumped Wisdom so quickly.

Clearly, Pulis is not convinced by the 22-year old's defensive ability, and he appears to be right as West Brom's defensive stats quickly improved without Wisdom in the team.

This doesn't bode well for Liverpool, but hopefully, the experience will help Wisdom and improve. The right-back position is there for the taking, and unless Rodgers signs a big-money right-back over the summer, it's Wisdom's to lose.

On a related note: Regular readers may be wondering how I can shoehorn The Mercenary into this article; well, wonder no more!

Unlike Sterling, Wisdom is clearly grateful for the privilege of playing for a renowned institution like Liverpool, and the club needs more players like him, i.e. those who will fight for the shirt.

  1. What we need more (cheap) players who really want to play for the club even though they are not that good?

  2. watched him playing for w brom sorry not good enough his positional sense is very poor he is a center half not a right back

  3. When the author fails to correct his article you get the impression it is not worth reading! Good job the error was almost at the end.... Lol! .... and the club needs more plays like him? Do we not mean more players? All very well making typo errors but hey at this level the article should be well checked. No Wisdom in not doing so! Lol! YAWN Jamie!

  4. He was Boo'd off by the WBA fans in his final start. Got a roasting from Ericson that day. IMO not good enough at RB. Manquillo started 19 games, and I presume they had a clause in the loan deal, relating to 20 starts, thats why he did not start again, Wisdom is too defensive for todays game, has nothing going forward.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Hopefully it means manquillo is sent packing although its doubtful wisdom will make the grade. Im baffled why we have resigned toure also. Why waste money on a player that doesnt play regularly and is generally no longer good enough. Why not give a youngster a chance. We waste so much money on players that dont play, id sooner see us have a smaller squad with money being used to buy fewer players with greater quality. Lfccertainly isnt smart with its money

  6. I am saying that a lot of Liverpool fans as well as the club were in denial over Suarez's actions so having to forgive him didn't really come into the equation but its ok to forgive someone transgressions as it shows a sign of growth so maybe the fans can remember that with this Sterling scenario.

  7. If wisdom plays on the right side of a back three then yeah I think it is great news. Otherwise then no he's not a good enough right back but I think he's got great potential for a centre back, quick, strong and good in the air.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Potentially very good centre back. Just heard Balloteli staying - Bolton number 2 keeper considering joining us and Ings off to Spurs -Oh well The Final was a good game tonight = loved the COKE GUY -really good player. LFC should go for Columbian forwards = they are all brilliant and CHEAP

  9. Manquillo is a much better player than wisdom. If Flanagan was fit he'd be much better than them both, but even at that we need a new right back

    ReplyDelete
  10. All the top clubs in the country aren't queuing up to pay 50 mil for Wisdom (more's the pity). If they were, in sure his decision to extend his contract wouldn't have been quite so easy.
Wisdom is not a RB for me and will ultimately end up as a CB I think. He may be a decent squad player but I hope he's not being seen as the answer to our defensive problems.
If we sign another RB and CB I wouldn't be surprised to see Wisdom go back out on loan. Being young and English, if he has a strong loan spell in the premier league, his value will increase as well

Flanagan isn't more talented than Manquillo. Both can defend but Manquillo has better passing and ball control.

  14. Best thing to do: convince Glen to stay by his doubling wages with a new five year contract and change his job title to defensive coach, then create special new position to suit Andre's talents - 'holding midfield/attacking sweeper keeper' - job done. We're gonna win the league. #BRIN

  15. Trippier be a better bet, buy cheap, get a season or two of committed to the cause unfaltering work from him and then fleece another club for his services for a grossly overhyped value.

  21. I fear the damage is done. I am not sure who is more at fault but the fans have by and large decided it is all down to Sterling. I doubt that very much.

    ReplyDelete
  22. No. Liverpool need more players who are happy and grateful to play for the club.

    ReplyDelete
  23. If big clubs were interested in Wisdom and were offering higher wages and better chances to win trophies then even he would have considered his options before signing an extension.

  25. "POWERHOUSE"??? LMAO! He's not even close.. average at best player. More average crap that everyone gets excited about bcuz he's british... Barely good enough to play for the janitorial team on chelsea, city or aresenal yet LFC fans raving about him... speaks volumes about our ambition..

I'm not saying it was a wet dream but it was pretty awesome. ..

  30. Wisdom was our player anyway he's just signed a new contract....Liverpool need big changes and there is no getting away from it. We need to get shut of 7 players at least and they need replacing by whom is open to debate, we need a leftback a rightback, Defensive Mid, Centre Mid, a couple of wingers and a proven goalscorer to say the least...

    ReplyDelete
  31. He's still not good enough regardless

  32. Weird, I'm in complete agreement with the sentiment of your post and while I know that Prem Footie is unworldly, I can't help but give it a fair comparison to the mere-mortal dimension - is anyone else normally happy and grateful in their job. Just a thought.

..on top of which there are absolutely no pr releases whatsoever giving full backing to Brendan for the coming year...

...more...reports are Ancellotti clear...Klopp clear....doesn't happen often to have two yes two top coaches available without a big pay off fee to their club when trying to poach them....

okey... we have a backup in any places... RB .. I like to take manquillo and wisdom.. manquillo like to make overlap and wisdom like play in between half area.. more defensive.
.. Left back .. I like to give Flanagan there to backup Moreno..

you now... Liverpool basicly are strong team.. they play the ball without worldclass player and still at 6 place.. if they want sit at top 4 site.. they must add 2 goal proven striker and high rating.
I like they get cristian benteke and Lacazatte ... Sturridge and Origi will be new backup pair.
    ...
1 wide skill attacker and I like to add Marko Reus or Cristien Eriksen... This 2 man like attack and goal proven. Good at freekick and deadball. Who will be gerrard or suarez next???

    ReplyDelete
  63. I pretty much think the back 3 idea will get scrapped because neither Flanagan or Wisdom have a hope as wing backs.

    ReplyDelete
  64. He's a local dude, so that's a plus.

The question I always ask myself when players go out on loan is whether I would have wanted to transfer them to Liverpool based on their performances at their loan club. Blocking out their Liverpool affiliation, in other words, to look at it a bit more objectively. Wisdom was okay, but, hey, it doesn't look like we're going to improve all the areas that need improving.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  72. To be fair, he could've stopped playing him so much simply because he knew he would be coming back to Liverpool at the end of the season, so wanted to build a solid defence with his permanent players.
I hope Wisdom gets a chance in the first team. At 22, I don't think he's too young to not be able to cope.
    Also he is a unit!

    ReplyDelete
  80. True, but maybe everyone knew he was always going to be going back to Liverpool.

    ReplyDelete
  81. We will see.

When he first played for Liverpool I thought he looked good but seems to have dropped away lately. I would be really happy if he did turn out to be good whether as a full back or CB.

I think there is a huge risk in bringing in so many players, like last summer.. Problem with bringing in that number is the risk of diluting the quality we could afford.... And as seen with this seson, intergrating so many new faces, especially with the departure of so many players..... We do that, and I would put my house on us having another poor transitional season..... We need players, but we need to do it over the next couple or so windows, and even though it's not what most would like, it's the quickest while safest way to intergrate them..... For this window, I would like to see 2 strikers first and foremost, and DM next and then a really good RB.... I think, at a push, we could add a GK to that, but no more in this window.... If we get a solid DM, we have Can and Hendo to play CM... Thinking we'll line up in a 4-3-3, I think that will be fine till christmas.... If I was a risk taker, I would try and convert Lovren from a CB and try and drg a DM out of him... He isn't a bad passer of the ball, and his tackling is good, it's just his positional sense that is out, and moving him to DM, we could remove that issue....Either way, we have to buy atleast 2 strikers.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Continue praying my friend

    ReplyDelete
  89. Stan , the reason the players struggled to do well is because some of them were simply not good enough.

Can is Mr Versatile and looked descent at right centre back as a right back he was exposed by the best wingers in league time and time again.

But he was played at back in order for B Rodgers L Child J Allen to play regularly in Centre Midfield.

How many True Real Liverpool fans wanted Lambert, Balotell?

Lallana is a top class player and will come good for club over next two seasons. He has been plagued by injuries but his price tag which was £7-£8M over priced is what has put pressure on him.

Lovren like Sakho is a top class quality Defender , but as he have no protection in front of them unless L Leiva plays in side. And at side of them there is no Cover as A Moreno thinks he is L Messi.

When our club can bring in two matic/ mascherano type midfielders at club and one in side always and a Left back that can defend well, tackle then get forward and attack playing week in week out. We will see the very best of our two left footed Left backs.

Who should compete with one another to play as LCB

Balotelli, Lambert and Markovic was a waste of £20M

And they may never ever justify what they were brought for

The players i have mentioned we should bring to club would all make a difference from start as they are top class players and better than what we have

A Begovic Of Stoke is a better GK than S Mignolet so he should and would become first choice GK

A Robertson Of Hull is a young fast mobile quick left back who can defend and take well, whilst bombs forward effectively.

T Alderwierld Of A Madrid Or S Kjaer Of Lille are two tough tackling solid defenders like M Skrtel who would challenge him and Toure for place in side.

Lars Bender Of Bayer Leverkusen is the Matic Type DM we have desperately been screaming out for since Mascherano left in 2008

G Imbulla Of Marseille is another athletic mobile tough tackling Defensive Midfielder but he is young and learning his trade, he woul offer class quality competition to Lars Bender and in some games we could play both away from home if we need to nick win 0 1 or 0 2

Y Cabaye Or M Verratti Of PSG or T Alacantara are three world class midfileders who are much better than any of the central midfielders at club. Any one of these midfielders could compete vs the likes of Cazorla, Fabregas, Koke, Kroos, Modric, Pogba and Rakitic as they are of similar class and quality.

Whilst Can and Henderson are nowhere near those players in class and quality

K Bellarabi is a top class german international winger who creates and scores goals and would bring more creativity and goals to side than IBE and Markovic combined

C Benteke Of A Villa should be brought to club to replace R Lambert and M Balotelli
He would cost club £20-£25M plus R Lambert

But he would guarantee the club 15-30 goals a season and would offer club another option

P Aubamayeng Of B Dortmund is a mobile lightning fast forward and winger who is descent finisher and would keep D Sturridge on his toes season in season out and if and When Sturridge is out injured we would have like for like pacey quick striker there to take his place

    ReplyDelete
  90. I am,

Arsenal are after Benzema and Khedira, Chelsea are After Koke and Pogba, Man City are after Pogba and Cavani, Man United have landed Depay and now they are after Hummels, Gundogdan and Cavani.

Yet we are linked with D Ings and J Milner, SERIOUSLY.

And give new contracts to players who are not even first team class ( Toure and Wisdom)

Listing players for certain roles is all well and good, but my point was about bringing in too many new players at once, and ending up in the same situation we were this season.... You can't claim the players brought in weren't good enough, because thats just not true... The way they were used worked to undermine them as players, and that is the truth.. Marko may be a little lite-weight for the PL, but he can, like Coutinho, adapt... Balotelli is a goalscorer, and although I wouldn't have bought him, he was always a goalscorer, and you don't just lose that... Lambert was again brought in to fill a specific role, and if it wasn't the repeated injury problems became a problem for him... He wasn't brought in because he could slot straight into the style of play, he was brought in because he offered something different... Brendans use of him doesn't make him a bad footballer all of a sudden.....
The point is, aswell we know what we need, but we can't do it all in one window, and expect to get the quality we desperately need....Money just doesn't allow for 9 world class signings in one window.....

    ReplyDelete
  94. Wisdom has always struck me as a bit robotic, predictable and somewhat plodding. Anyone else in the camp?

    ReplyDelete
  95. You are very welcome Case, I'll always try when I can...shame it didn't work bro...

  97. I know. So doubt he would be on so low there.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Stan, I have said we need to sign 8 Class quality players and 1 world class signing this summer.

Before season kicked off i knew Markovic would not succeed in Premiership, he is too light weight and nimbly. Thing is you Sterling and Ibe are much better than Markovic , yet similar ages and sizes. The difference is IBE and Sterling play without Fear.

Balotelli and Lambert are Strikers, Lallana and Markovic are attacking players the Transfer Committee and B Rodgers wasted £65M on attackers that struggled to score 15-30 goals between them all season. Where As L Suarez scored 31 goals the season before and was in double figures for assists.

Our club need top class quality players better that we have at club that can hit ground running from start, not in few years time. As our Rivals are strengthening year in year out and making the gap between us and them bigger.

    ReplyDelete
