Next Stop Anfield? 'Unstoppable' €35m Liverpool target '99.9% certain' to sign for a Premier League team

On Monday, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers revealed his admiration for PSV Eindhoven star Memphis Depay, hailing the coveted attacker as 'very talented', but refusing to 'confirm or deny' the Reds' alleged interest in a transfer. Depay reportedly wants to sign for Liverpool ahead of Manchester United, and according to former PSV Sporting Director Frank Arnesen, a move to the Premier League this summer is an absolute certainty.

When asked today about the possibility of Depay signing for either Manchester United or Liverpool, Arnesen claimed:

"[A move to the Premier League] is 99.9 per cent certain. He [Depay] is going from strength to strength, and even though he’s only 21, he's unstoppable. He’s definitely the big talent and he’ll be good in the Premier League."

To me, it feels like history is repeating itself. The speculation over Depay is at fever ptich right now, and every single day, new stories abound about how he wants to sign for the club etc.

Well, the same thing happened in the past with players like Alexis Sanchez, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Yeheven Konoplyanka, and Diego Costa: wall-to-wall media coverage, and then...inevitable, and irretrievable transfer fail.

I'd like to believe in the possibility of this deal, but I just can't see it happening. Liverpool is a step-up from PSV, but would Depay choose the Reds - who will almost certainly be Champions League-bereft next season - over Man Utd, and the whole host of other clubs who are sure to come out of the woodwork in the summer?

I fully expect Arsene Wenger to show his hand once the transfer window opens, and there's every possibility that we could be in for a repeat of the Sanchez fiasco.

Of course, I hope for the opposite outcome, but I'd rather be realistic about the situation.

Still, all is not lost - Liverpool could end up with football demi-god James Milner instead, and what an stunning transfer coup that would be!

  1. It gets better , Liverpool busy with a new contract with Brad Jones .

  2. Agreed Jaimie,

Even if we are in the driving seat for Depay somehow FSG will and Ian Ayre will baulk at the price and do what they did with last season.

I'm no longer in support of Rogers remaining and for the status quo to carry on on.
The current way of doing things at LFC is not working and the whole of the Executive needs sweeping out .

  3. I think Liverpool could get Depay, in football you never know. We got Suarez when he scored 39 goals that season.
James Milner would be a great signing, especially with Gerrard leaving. If Liverpool got him on a free, it would be up there with the best deals of the season.

  4. B R talking too much as usual again today in press - wants to keep bALO AND sTERLING - TIME TO GO KLOPP

  5. We will not get Depay - FULL STOP - This manager is now completely lost and I would not be in the least bit suprised if QPR beat us

  6. Now that shows ambition!!!!!!!?

  7. Jaimie, I hate to say it but Liverpool might not be a step up from PSV. Sure, financially and globally, we are bigger but at PSV, Depay will have Cl football and a great manager in Cocu. We are slowly losing our power day by day and only the romantic element of Liverpool can attract Depay to the club. The only other reason can be is Utd are not interested.

  10. Hi RAY. Is the [ . ] key on your keyboard not working? Maybe try using a can of compressed air to clear any crumbs out.

  11. Or PSV trying to drive up the price more likely....

  12. Completely agree, Markus. Not sure where this distain for Milner comes from; he's a hard working, dedicated and decorated pro. With Gerrard and a number of other senior players leaving we could really use Milner's experience. Plus he can deliver a set piece, something we've been very poor at this season. In my view, City are a better side when Milner is in there making those fast, direct runs.

  13. I will be amazed if LFC get Depay...at the moment I'm not optimistic. In recent history it seems as if agents use LFC as a marketing tool to hype their players in order to generate interest in moving to their desired club.

  16. Slowly losing our power, sorry to break to you but we lost our power years ago.

Football is all about money and CL football and we are and have been way behind for many years now

    ReplyDelete
  17. We won't get either player because if any other clubs come in who are on the CL they will choose those clubs above Liverpool.

  18. if you're looking to sell something it's best not to let on that you don't really want it especially if they are your potential rivals

  20. I am really looking forward to seeing Depy at Anfield - even if it is only once a season

  21. Well it just won't work on me I can think for my self .. but I do think that Sterling is becoming a bit of a mercenary. All that money he earns has turned his head a bit just like all those footballing Ladyboys .. ;-)

  22. If there is any real truth in this story there's 2 ways to look at it.there's the Sanchez saga.getting linked with us to boost sale price & scare every top club in Europe into action.or the Suarez saga.go to a club where your guaranteed 1st team football to showcase your product to drive up your stock value.it's easier to do this short term at LFC than somewhere like Utd where the competition for places is much stronger & more difficult to shine.shrewd isn't the word.it's not about this contract it's all about getting that massive contract earlier with minimal effort & time.

  23. I don't ever recall Costa, Mucky or Sanchez ever stating they wanted to join LFC, or the media making those claims.... Sometimes I think some people just love to bath in misery, and any sign of optimism is sniggered at.... Lets just write this one off now before anyone gets hurt......

    ReplyDelete
  24. I maybe wrong, but as far as I'm aware, Fees have already been agreed.....

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'd take Milner any day of the week.. AA good solid player you can rely on.... Isn't that exactly what this team is crying out for right now....?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Since when did it become the norm for supposed LFC fans to have such a low opinion of the club they claim to love....

  27. My thoughts exactly.

  30. I think the issue with Sanchez was that everybody knew we were after him, even BR said that he chose Arsenal over Liverpool because his wife wanted to live in London, yet everybody and their dog knew Sanchez was going to Arsenal and BR wasted a month chasing him.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yes, the nearest signing was Konoplyanka which was materialized only to not go through due to some inagreements over transfer fee, not the player's discontent of being an LFC player.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yes we got Joe Cole on a free too!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Joe Cole was just not up to it...

  34. More good news, Chelski want Lacazette, oh well..

    ReplyDelete
  35. and using Remy as part payment !

    ReplyDelete
  36. Was buying Remy last year a long term strategy to get Lacazette, if so ..hats off to them.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Not sure if that is the case BUT
Chelsea 's business brain's are miles ahead of the rest !

    ReplyDelete
  38. It doesn't matter who we buy if BR is still in charge. Even if we get Depay he'll probably play on the left side of a back three.

FSG need to cut their losses and find a better quality manager - Klopp is a free agent - could he do at Liverpool what he did for Dortmund? Who knows, but I'd rather that than another year of going nowhere with BR.

Depressing stat - we have spent £770m on 190 players since we last won the league that's an average of nearly £31m a year. BR has spent just short of £212m that's an average of nearly £71m a year. Would you trust him with anymore?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Is Jones getting another contract? This is mental, he is awful.

    ReplyDelete
  40. You might have misread that. FSG are taking out a contract to have Brad 'erased'.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Anton Chigurh is on the case

    ReplyDelete
  42. Have to say I find JK's constant derision of him baffling. He would probably talk about 'specific measurable impact' here, but for me Milner's running and work rate also make him a very useful player in creating spaces and stretching opposition defence. Rather like Kuyt, actually.

  43. Liverpool is no place for old men

  44. "What's the most you ever lost on a coin toss? Call it, Brad"

  46. Its not a low opinion, its called reality, something which some Liverpool fans need to accept and stop living in the past.

Manchester Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea and Man City are bigger then Liverpool.

They all generate more revenue, can pay higher wages, higher transfer fee's and more importantly, in the last 10 years have won more and are consistently in the CL.

Most players couldn't give a toss what we did 20+ years ago.

What they care about is how much will they get paid, what trophies they can win and will they be in the CL.

When you take rest of Europe into account there are many teams that can offer more in money and can also point to that they are on the CL every year.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Would not say Chelsea City or Arsenal are bigger just wealthier.

    ReplyDelete
  48. And have won more Trophies and have played in the CL year in, year out for years.

For many players, that means bigger.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Still not bigger clubs send them anywhere in the world to play and Liverpool will out draw them.

    ReplyDelete
  50. If Depay went to any of the top 4 sides, where would he play?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Or you could simply stop your daily crying until you have come away from the computer.

    ReplyDelete
  52. In Germany or Spain

    ReplyDelete
  53. I doubt it was planned that far forward. Chelsea seem more like calculated opportunists...

    ReplyDelete
  54. I'd take him as well... I think it's just the fear of (A) Him being our ONLY target and (B) him coming in on a grossly inflated wage. He won't be one to take us forward, but in the meantime he's a no brainer if we get a good deal on a contract.

    ReplyDelete
  55. From what I recall, the Konoplyanka one wasn't even about transfer fee. It was the administration of Dnipro being d*cks about it and dawdling signing the papers until it was too late. They wanted to keep him, so they just kept stalling till the window was past.

    ReplyDelete
  56. A very calculated risk !

    ReplyDelete
  57. Until more parties enter the race. The whole thing seems like a ploy to get more money out of United if you ask me.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Footballing ladyboys? The best of both worlds...

    ReplyDelete
  59. I think Milner is a good player and would welcome his addition, but I understand where people's trepidation comes from. He's unlikely to improve the team hugely as much as augment the squad.

I think it is a bit like when we were being linked with Eto'o before we bought Mario last season- the reaction was overly negative despite the fact I think we'd have been better off if we had him in the squad.

I think it is less about the player and more about what he represents (a perceived lack of ambition).

    ReplyDelete
  62. Spoken like a true Liverpool fan - winning is so overrated

    ReplyDelete
  63. Not bad though if you can use your strengths to sign a player who is out of contract and still well rated.

You might have to pay a bit more in wages and back handers (sorry agent's fees I mean) but once they sign a contract they are an asset with a value. Shrewd move

Good comparison... I would take another Dirk Kuyt all day every day...

  73. Milner, Benteke, Wisdom, and Origi to replace Gerrard, Balotelli, Johnson and Borini. I have a feeling Sterling will go if City offer silly money for him, this will give us more cash for Depay. But with FSG refusing to pay eye watering wages, all the other top clubs with respected experienced managers will have a distinct advantage over us.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Some how, I get the feeling people think selling Sterling will bring in bucket loads of cash. There are however a couple of flaws in Sterling's game, namely his crossing for a wide player is hit and miss. His passing is average and his shooting is dire. We are not speaking about a 20 goal a year player here, the one he missed yesterday being a point to contemplate.
    .
People seem to think we'll fund Benteke and Depay with the sale of Sterling, not a chance.
