'Marquee' Signing? Liverpool chase 'superb' £20m attacker BR wanted to replace Suarez

During the recent January transfer window, Liverpool were linked with a move for £20m-rated Southampton attacker Jay Rodriguez, and with the talented striker now back in training after a long-term injury, the Reds are reportedly back in the race to sign him.

Last season, reports claimed that Rodgers wanted Rodriguez to replace Luis Suarez (!), and sccording to Wednesday's Daily Express:

* Liverpool, Man City, and Tottenham are monitoring Rodriguez.

* Al three clubs will consider summer bids if the 26-year old can 'show that there are no lingering effects from the injury'.

Ex-Red Jamie Redknapp is a big fan of 'superb' Rodriguez, and in a recent column for the Daily Mail, he enthused;

"He [Rodriguez] is a smashing lad...with a continental style. He is more polished now...and can strike a ball with swerve and movement".

Saints boss Ronaldo Koeman insists the striker is not for sale, and in January, he told reporters on Friday:

"Jay will come back and play in football and that’s our question, not about the rumours. He’s a Southampton player, he has a contract and he’s not for sale"

That's good news because it's a huge mistake to even consider signing Rodriguez:

* A serious cruciate ligament injury is arguably the worst injury a footballer can suffer.

* In many cases, it takes a very long time to recover previous form. Just ask Lucas. Or Falcao.

* Rodriguez spent 12 months on the sidelines, and in January, he suffered another 'setback', as revealed by Burnley star Sam Vokes: "I spoke to Jay in the week and he was here for the Liverpool game. He’s struggling a bit with his knee but he’s another strong character and I’m sure he will come through it.”

In my view, Liverpool's transfer policy should explicitly preclude the signing of players with recent cruciate ligament injuries. The likes of Falcao, Valdes, and Rodriguez are fine players, but there's no guarantee that they'll ever recover their previous form, and with large sums of money involved, the risk just isn't worth taking.

If, after a full year of playing regularly, Rodriguez is injury-free and playing well, then that is the time to consider a transfer. Granted, Rodriquez appears to be an upgrade on Borini, Balotelli, and Lambert, but signing him so soon after a major injury is transfer negligence (IMO).

Plus, it goes without saying, but please: No more Southampton players!

Rodgers himself admitted this week that Liverpool need 'marquee players', and like Lallana, Rodriguez is not going to push Liverpool to the next level.

  1. There is not one English player right now that would be available and go to Liverpool and make an immediate positive impact.
Rodriguez ? Please . Haven't Liverpool given enough money to Southampton the last 12 months. ?

  2. All I see is another player we need to worry about, Most of the players we are supposedly interested in, areserious injury worries... What the heck is all that about....?

    ReplyDelete
  3. Yes, totally agree,

Cruciate ligaments are the foundation of knee stability, especially important for twisting and explosion of speed.

This injury is just as bad on the mind as on the body, confidence gets shot to pieces and players start mollycoddling themselves so cannot express themselves fully on pitch.
It takes ages for them to regain that non-thought approach to the football game again....

Anyway what the hell are we doing considering crocks when there is a whole world of players for the same price....

Southampton FC....for LFC at the moment its like a brothel to a sex addict....

  4. This is a joke with all respect this player been injured for ever

  5. Ray, for once I can say that I completely and unequivocally agree with you

  6. Rodgers cannot be allowed to spend or else we are Doomed

  7. the bare minmum i will settle for is Benteke. for the specific Strike position, i want us to tru to purchase Gonzalo Higuain from Napoli along with Rafa Benitez. Galatico. if we cant get him then target Lacazette. if we cant get him we should try for Karim Benzema who could leave if Madrid buy a world class striker or Hernandez fufils his true potential. if we cant get Benzema then buy both Vietto and Benteke. two hungry young strikers who in 2 years will be world class and can get some titles in that time

    ReplyDelete
  8. Now Jay Rodriguez is a marquee signing? we can do better.

    ReplyDelete
  9. If we want to really make an statement, we should IMO sign Kondogbia (which is a cheaper version of Pogba), Lacazatte and Depay. These three will at least guarantee CL. maybe 80 m combined

    ReplyDelete
  10. For the reported 42 m, Villa are having a laugh.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Yes, hands off the Saint's

    ReplyDelete
  12. I think we have 'raided' Southamtpon enough. There are players all over Europe that have tons of talent and that is the reason we have a scouting department. To see talent no one else notices. Rodriguez has no experience and has not played football for a reason. Not going to happen.

Well, lets just hope that the reported monitoring is really a smoke screen and then 'Pow! right in the kisser' - we've signed Lacazette.

  14. The only two players who would make side better from Southampton at Moment are N Clyne who is better defensively than any full back we have at club.
And M Schneiderlin who is better than any Defensive midfielder( Allen and Leiva) at the club by a country mile as he has height, mobility, bit of pace and breaks up play and protects back four very well.
B Rodgers or hopefully a new manager( Klopp) should ship out these 12 players this summer for definite:
B Jones GK S Coates CB K Toure CB G Johnson RB
A Wisdom RB J Enrique LB J Clue/Useless Allen CM
L Alberto AM I Aspas FD F Borini FD R Lambert FD
    L Markovic RW/LW FD F Balotelli
And B Rodgers Or a New Manager( Klopp) should first and foremost think of doing well in the Premiership and having assault on Premiership Title: So good Performing Premiership players should be brought to club:
And These are the 5 Premiership players who should be brought to club along with these 3 top class players from abroad this summer:
Premiership Players: GK RB DM RW/LW FD ( SPINE)
GK: A Begovic Of Stoke for £10-£14M to compete with S Mignolet for next 5- 8 seasons at club to replace B Jones
RB: N Clyne and M Schneiderlin Of Southampton should be brought to club in £40M deal
Clyne should be brought in to compete with Flannagan and Manquillo
to replace G Johnson and A Wisdom
DM:M Schneiderlin should be brought in to compete with L Leiva to replace J Clue/Useless Allen
RW/LWF: Y Bolaise Of Crystal Palace should be brought for £10-£15M plus J Enrique to compete with J IBE
FD: C Benteke Of A Villa should be brought to club for £20M plus R Lambert going the other way to replace M Balotelli and R Lambert

    Marquee Signing 2:
M Depay Of PSV for £18-£25M to compete with R Sterling and to replace L Alberto

  15. I agree, but this was down to his relative inexperience, If you follow my posts, I criticize Rodgers for a number of reasons but the thing is Rodgers is not the culprit for EVERYTHING. For example, a number of players incredibly under performed, ironically Sterling being one of them

    ReplyDelete
  16. let's just say finding great players is not his strong suit.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yes but Sterling has playing up top for most of the season and is he a striker?

While Rodgers does not amke use of Borini, Lambert and Balotelli who are strikers?

And you want to blame Sterling for what?

    ReplyDelete
  18. The fact that Sterling has played up top just confirms how shit Rodgers' signings are and I criticize him for that. But Sterling is to blame for a number of things you exactly know them word by word.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Oh bring Chelsea into the equation when they have won many trophies recently. Cough cough.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Sterling is still developing. He is 20 years old and not anywhere near being a striker capable of scoring 20 goals a season yet he is our highest scorer this season?

What bdid you want Sterling to do this season, score 20 goals when he has been at RB, RWB, Striker, winger...

Seriously, what were you expecting from Sterling thi season? To score 20 EPL goals?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Do you know Nigel Pearson, Logan?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Got nothing to do with the discussion.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I kinda share his feelings when reading your post.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Ray Houghton having a right dig at Brendan... Rodgers was reminded the statement he made after spurs 2013/14 summer spending.
Brendan Rodgers "if you spend over 100-odd million you'd expect to be challenging for the league"

    ReplyDelete
  25. Think someone needs to explain what marquee players mean.I have nothing against Rodriguez but he is no more than a squad player, certainly nowhere near the level we to push on to the next level.spending that sort of money on player coming back from serious injury is just intergalacticly dumb.now ive convinced myself it's a done deal.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Well there you go.

Sterling needed to score 20 EPL goals this season who is not a striker and while Rodgers had 3 other strikers available to him, did not make use of them, crying that he lost 50 goals when Suarez left etc etc etc.

    Sterling is to blame!!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. 1. Sterling is to blame for a totally different reason.
    2. 3 Strikers are utter failure and the fact that Rodgers acknowledges his signing have not performed is actually a good thing.
    3. Rodgers IS to blame for these signings and for Suarez excuse.

    ReplyDelete
  28. "Rodgers acknowledges his signing have not performed is actually a good thing."

    Quotes from Rodgers please.

    ReplyDelete
  29. It is implied for a normal person when he does not use them when clearly crying out for goals.

    ReplyDelete
  30. "Rodgers acknowledges his signing have not performed is actually a good thing."

    Lies!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Do you want him to openly say that in press?!

    ReplyDelete
  32. When he calls his team's performances "OUTSTANDING" after losses or draws?

"Rodgers acknowledges his signing have not performed is actually a good thing."

    I think not.

    ReplyDelete
  33. he says that on every post match interview!
if he truly believed Borini was outstanding he would have used him more regularly.

    ReplyDelete
  34. OMG.

Mate, go find yourself a place next to Pascoe and Marsh and you will also have an opportunity to just nod your head up and down.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Okay you clearly can not handle the discussion when it does not go your way.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Explian to me where the discussion is not going my way?

I asked you whether you expected Sterling to score 20 goals this season.

You said " For example, a number of players incredibly under performed, ironically Sterling being one of them"

    Now answer the question,

Reply appreciated Jay - was concerned I'd made a major faux pas in introducing both politics and religion into a comment.
Regards Hitch, must admit I've enjoyed several evenings viewing his religion based debates, accompanied by a few beers it's quite enjoyable watching adults try to argue their case as to why they 'don't believe' in dinosaurs. Often Hitch is accompanied by Dawkins too, which for me adds to the entertainment and educational value.
Climate change and how it's being driven, is something I really don't know enough about, will go with the keeping my mouth shut and just looking stupid option on that one. Although, anyone who completely dismisses the idea (including Hitchens) is clearly a fool in that respect.
I'm painfully perched on the fence with Garage, a harmless buffoon? A straight talking bloke with some refreshing opinions? I'm not sure yet. He certainly isn't a saint that's for sure, very much jobs for the boys and as you imply, I haven't read about him putting his money where his beliefs are and donating his wages from the EU to a good cause.
Talking of which I should make very clear, it's really only his views on 'self-governance' and it being increasingly eroded by the EU that I do like, immigration and social welfare et al are massive topics, suffice to say I am definitely not harbouring any xenophobic or similar views and the worry he may be, could prevent me from sticking an x next to his parties rep in a few days. Then I may be left with nowhere to put the x though and that does seem a huge waste.
Re Blair - they should give out sick bags anytime he's around, horrible excuse for a human being.

    ReplyDelete
  39. He under performed in Europe.
8 games 0 goals. any argument?
oh and let him score 10 first then talk about 20 EPL goals!

    ReplyDelete
  40. And he is our highest scorer this season.

Nothing but a scapegoat = Raheem Sterling.

    ReplyDelete
  41. 1. Never a good idea to take an idea from another source without attributing credit to that source.

    2. Bad idea to admit you stole the idea from said source once you're called out on the content you stole.

    3. Considering we had a great run of 13 games after we switched to playing Sterling up top, I don't think that should be your argument. I think your argument should be that once teams figured it out, he didn't adjust well to that. And furthermore, it took him too long to put Sterling up top as the main striker.

    4. I never got the impression that Rodgers was "complaining". My understanding is he was asked why has this season not been as successful, and his answer was we haven't scored enough, that we really miss Suarez. Which is factually correct. Like I said the other day, he's responsible (along with owners and the transfer committee) for not adequately replacing Suarez. And the players they brought in are also culpable for not performing.

    5. None of our strikers have performed well this season; all were brought in the Rodgers era.

Do you understand what complaining is and what the definition of an excuse is?

To be clear (even if you're not sure), neither are present here.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Yes, 11 goals across all season is something to deserve legend stories.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Weren't you just complaining about Rodgers playing him as a main striker?

But now you're commending him for being our highest scorer?

    ReplyDelete
  44. And you still fail to answer the question.

What were you expecting from Sterling thi season? To score 20 EPL goals?

    ReplyDelete
  45. He has been linked with every top half team in the last few months. His agent is obviously looking to get his name our there.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Actually YES! I expect him to score more than 20 if he is demanding that wage and stardom. As JK perfectly put it, he can' be considered a ''youth'' anymore!

    ReplyDelete
  47. That is not my argument.

Let me explain it in a more simple way which I have already mentioned.

"Sterling is still developing. He is 20 years old and not anywhere near being a striker capable of scoring 20 goals a season yet he is our highest scorer this season?"

    ReplyDelete
  48. 100%, go all out to get these three, don't care if we add no one else to the squad:

GK- Migs is fine, Ward back up,

Defence-fine- Skr, Lov, Sak, Can, Ilori, Moren, Smith, Mclaughlin , Toure, Manqi (flanno injured 9 months)

Midfield- Kondogbia, Depay, Hend, Lucas, Cout, Sterl, Marko, Ibe, lallana, Teixera
Attack Studge, Lacazette, Origi, Balo, Yesil
That's a squad of 27, 25 have to be registered with PL, some of the above under 21 (unlimited) so some room for expansion but this is the basis of a good squad with your three additions.

    ReplyDelete
  49. still developing? oh common he has developed.... into a full time greed machine

    ReplyDelete
  50. I understand that perspective.

Unfortunately, Sterling did himself no favors with this contract situation. And Rodgers only hurt the situation further with his hyperbole.

But when Sterling is out there clamoring for 150k per week, he's going to be held to a higher standard, in this case, one that is arguably excessively high. But he has only himself to blame.

    ReplyDelete
  51. So you believe what you want and ignore what you don't. Sound.

    ReplyDelete
  52. He selectively agree with facts he considers fitting with his discussion.

    ReplyDelete
  53. You are expecting him to score more for demanding that wage?

Ok, so Balotelli is earning more than Sterling and Balo is on holiday at Anfield, not considered a youth and has shown two fingers to the club "I am ill" I do not know how many times YET Sterling has shown up and not ONCE moaned for being played at RB, RWB, Winger and Striker.

So again, Sterling as an INDIVIDUAL at 20 years of age, still developing, not a striker in any shape or from, can play there and you expected him to score 20 EPL goals this season when the news of his incredible contract was scattered all over the show by Brendan Rodgers.

    Pot kettle black.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Did you watch the BBC interview of Sterling?

    ReplyDelete
  55. "Sterling as an INDIVIDUAL at 20 years of age, still developing, not a striker in any shape or from, can play there"

Regardless of his age, if the boy wants to make 5x as much, he better be willing to face the consequences of his demands. Which in this case is simply higher expectations.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Are you referring to the one that was incredibly awkward and did him no favors?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Balotelli was an established player prior to his signing otherwise and based on his current form, he deserves peanuts.
Sterling on the other hand has a grand total career goals of 23.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Why are you asking him?

    ReplyDelete
  59. Don't be harsh on him he is not well and has developed a nasty cough just lately.. cough cough

    ReplyDelete
  60. Awkward? There was nothing awkward about Sterling in that interview.

    What did he say?

    ReplyDelete
  61. And clearly you expected him to scorre 20 EPL goals this season too.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Is turning down an IMPROVED contract NOT awkward?

  63. What did he say?

    ReplyDelete
  64. He CONFIRMED he turned down an improved contract amid reported interest from Arsenal

    ReplyDelete
  74. Yes I replied to it. I said it was mandatory for a manger in the top 4 to express title hopes for the future. What else could he say?

It is also sometimes necessary for a manager to say that he would obviously strive to win it, but with certain realities that the reality is that it was always going to be difficult or even unlikely.

that doesn't make him a liar, as you claimed, and is certainly not unacceptable or evidence that he is a poor manager

And I provided a quote to illustrate it which you utterly failed to respond to

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  81. Do me a favour - All the Saints signings have been huge disappontments = and the Premier League is a joke given the crazy prices we pay Barcelona treated our Champions City as a JOKE - They could have won by 10

    ReplyDelete
  82. I would actually swap some of the players we bought from Southampton with players they bought last summer as follows.

Lovren for Alderweireld (yes I know he is on loan)

Markovic - Tadic (price wise there is no contest)
Lallana - Mane (Have seen quite a bit of Mane and was signed for £15m less)
Lambert - Pele (Pelle cost only £5m more)

Remind me again why we spent £50m at Southampton last summer?

    ReplyDelete
  83. But Mike, he was Rodgers' biggest fan last year...

Certainly seems more genuine than Blair, but only hindsight will show for sure. I definitely trust him more than Camoron but that isn't saying much.

    ReplyDelete
  96. What about your new mum?

    ReplyDelete
  97. I was not praising Pearson's achievements but yes the Ostrich comment was a bit over the top but at least he could admit that Chelsea were deserved winners and did not make any excuses about the loss.

    ReplyDelete
  98. All teams who can offer CL will be ahead in the queue and it very likely will have to see us cut down on our massive squad before we can sign anymore players.

    Balotelli? Any takers?

    ReplyDelete
  99. For me Ibe deserves a new contract based on his emergence into the first team. I don't think its as much as what have you done in the first team. This is a pay-rise that suggests we value that you have made the HUGE step up from reserves/championship to premier league. Well done here's your carrot...the next stick will be developing into a bigger role within the team...next carrot.
Imagine getting a massive promotion in any job and not getting a subsequent pay rise, it wouldn't wash.
However I completely agree with the effusive overpraise already. What ever happened to 'Yes we like his strength, speed and direct play, lots of potential to push onto but we're pleased so far'. I don't even praise my 4 year old daughter as much as Rodgers praises his grown men.

    ReplyDelete
  100. And seemingly proud of it!

Now apparently BR is the root of all evil

    ReplyDelete
  101. Interviewer (@ 9:34): "You turned down a contract. They've co,e to you with several deals, but you turned down one worth £100k-a-week. The average 20-year old will look at that think 'wow, that's amazing'. What Liverpool fans want to know is, why did you turn that down?

Sterling: Obviously, it's flattering to get such a huge contract, and I'm grateful to the club for offering me the contract, BUT, at this moment in time, I just want to solely focus on football, and try and help the club get to the final of the FA Cup.

    -----------

The interviewer mentioned the rejected £100k-a-week contract THREE TIMES in her question.

Sterling then proceeded to give his stock answer about waiting till the end of the season.

If he didn't reject a contract, he would've said 'No, that's not correct; I haven't rejected a new deal.'

The interview even emphatically states: YOU TURNED DOWN A CONTRACT - Sterling tacitily confirms that with his answer.

This is obvious. You know it's obvious, yet you persist with your trademark intellectual dishonesty and endless pointless questions, as well as accusing other posters of lying, when it's patently obvious it's you who is being deceptive.

You are a deliberate antagonist, Logan, and I am sick of it. I've given you countless chances to moderate your posting style, and you continue to ignore the warnings.

    You're banned for 7-days.

You make some great points, but this episode just highlights the pointless antagonism you're fostering in the commenting community.

When you return, your posting style will need to change, or the ban will become permanent.

  104. An insatiable desire to cure you of your affliction. Why don't you answer why you turn EVERY single subject back to Rodgers?

When I see rubbish posted, I respond.

And no, it's not rubbish just to not rate BR or even to want him out. It's rubbish when your argument does not make sense or be based on illogical, arbitrary reasoning

  105. He has very different goals and pressures mate. Easy to be stoic in loss when everyone expects you to lose. Rodgers talks guff for sure though.

I did end up re-watching quite a few too! I do like the Paxman myself, a diminishing breed regrettably.
Politics is so divisive that I'm loath to really get into it too much, my general view though, is likely similar to a lot of Brits and it's born out of years of undelivered promises and blatant lies. IMO these have resulted in a widespread antipathy towards the whole political establishment, which now covers several generations.
As far as individual parties/leaders, they pretty much all say whatever they think the electorate wants to hear on any given day and of course this changes like the wind. I don't even think any of them are bothering to produce manifestos now. As Jay Jay says, sadly it's now more to do with appearance and perceived image.
Stepping off the fence though, I'll likely go with Farage as a protest vote, he has no chance of actually getting a majority vote, but it may just keep the main parties on their toes and invoke some much needed debate on some important, as well as delicate, subjects.
If you didn't already see it - the newsnight program once asked Paxman to start closing the show with a weather reading, naturally him being more a political commentator than a weather forecaster he was delighted to oblige:

Only clip I can find, it's sandwiched into a show, with another 'divisive' presenter ;-)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMAt8ZXqtbc

  113. We should absolutely not sign him. Too big a risk and he wasnt a world beater before the injury, good yes but top class no, he had one good season in the Premier league last year scoring 15 in 33 but the season before he returned just 6 goals in 35 games. Much better options out there for the price Saints will want.

  114. Very interesting insight. I wonder where Klopp will be next season you will have to look out for that team to see if you are correct. I will continue watching Liverpool and BR.

Get the Southampton scouts and coaches. They have Better scouts! Shit...we should know this!!! As for coaching! They get the best out of every player! Loveren is a great example! Starting to feel like were drifting toward what the mancs were in 80s buying Birtles ect off Forest. Worked and played great under Clough. Shite when scum bought them!!!

You are a silly man. Or woman.
Loren looked magnificent last season because he played under a manager who liked to play with 2 holding players in front of the defence. Sneiderlin and Wanyama would make the difference to any team. This season, Lovren has either had an ageing attacking midfielder 'protecting' or mighty Joe Alen.

  129. I was making the assumption the three above would use all the transfer fund and Migs would have to do for now.
