Bad News? 'Excellent' attacker admits he may quit Liverpool and sign for Brighton

Liverpool youngster Joao Teixeira is currently in the midst of a productive loan-spell at Brighton, and if Brendan Rodgers follows the Jordon Ibe development template, the young Portuguese may be in with a chance of breaking into the first next season. Teixiera is keeping his options open, however, and based on his latest comments, it seems as if he's actively considering a permanent move away from Anfield.

Speaking to reporters this week, Teixiera conceded that it's going to be 'really difficult' for him to break into the first team, but admitted that staying with Brighton is a viable long-term prospect. He noted:

"I dream of playing Premier League football with Liverpool, but you never know what's going to happen. I see Brighton as an option. I like everything here. I like the city and it's really nice living here. The stadium is brilliant and the fans always fill the stadium so it's great.”

With 9 goals/assists in 28 games, Teixeira is having a creditable impact at Brighton, and his performances are impressing boss Chris Hughton, who recently outlined the qualities he brings to the club. He enthused:

"He [Teixeira] is excellent. He’s young and playing in a demanding league, but [he has] a physicality about him, which helps. He has natural ability, and [he's showing] the type of quality he’s got.”

Teixeira is young, but not that young. He's 23 this year and he still hasn't made the breakthrough at Anfield, which doesn't bode well for the future. Jordon Ibe and Raheem Sterling are both younger, and they've featured regularly in the first team, so Teixeira is clearly playing catch-up.

I don't know what it is, but I get a Suso vibe about Teixeira. Rodgers doesn't appear to rate him; if he did, he would've given him a chance in the first team by now. As noted, Teixeira is almost 23 years old, and he's playing well for Brighton, so why not bring him back in January instead of Ibe?

After the Suso debacle, Teixeira is right to keep his options open. Historically, young attacking players rarely make it through the academy to become first-team regulars, so the odds are against the Portuguese making it an Anfield. Sterling is the exception to the rule, and at this stage, there's no guarantee than Ibe will make it in the long run.

Reds legend Ian St. John is a fan of Teixeira, and after his debut against Fulham last season, he praised the youngster's 'great movement', and further enthused:

"We’ve just witnessed the emergence of a really good kid. I remember watching Wayne Rooney’s debut, and Texeira is like him. He didn’t look phased, and got stuck in as well which is where some young players can be found out. He looks like he’s got real quality"

St. John's Rooney comparison is somewhat flattering, but let's just hope that football ability is the only thing Teixeira has in common with that diving thug. But I digress...

Is Teixeira any better than Suso? I've seen both play countless times for LFC's youth teams, but in terms of quality and potential, I don't see much difference. As such, I fully expect him to go the same way as the Suso, i.e. endlessly warming the bench, and then dumped on the Anfield scrapheap.

  1. I like the notion that AC Milan is the Anfield Scrapheap. I like it a *lot* :)

  2. I thought he looked solid last year against Fulham. Kind of disappointed that we have players who get the random chance, play well enough to deserve another chance, and seemingly don't get it.

I also don't view anything subliminal with his quotes. If he were to disregard Brighton as an option publicly, it would be foolish on his part.

Would be curious to see if he is given a real chance this summer, otherwise it's in his best interest to move on.

  3. It didn' work with Dalglish, it won't work with Rafa and it won't ever work with anybody that come's back. Never go back, it's that simple.

  4. It is criminal that this lad was not given his chance. He is made for Anfield, he will light it up, he is miles better than Joe Allen.

  5. Me 3?
I think I actually voted, but thought that was funny...

  6. Those cornball antics may play in the sticks (Italy), but this is Capitol City (England).

  7. Be fair. Joe Allen bossed City the other day.

  8. My Dad is a Brighton season ticket holder so I follow them as my second team and have seen him play a lot this year. For all of his talent, he is very inconsistent, very easily out muscled on the ball and to be honest I would struggle to see where he would play for Liverpool based on our current squad. He is far from having the overall qualities to threaten any of our attacking midfielders, which is his best position, and he is not as versatile or reliable a squad player as someone like Allen, Henderson or Can. I just can't see him getting any first team football anytime soon at Liverpool, so as talented as he is, it does make sense to let him leave and have a career somewhere else that will give him the first team football he needs.

  9. They couldn't be any less alike as players - apart from their small frame haha!

  10. Rafa may be the choice of a large minority of Red's fans, but I don't see John Henry giving him the job. He has a history of discord with owners. He probably wouldn't accept a transfer committee, or the strict control on spending. The loyal support he has among many fans will be a red flag to the owners as he has proved in the past he can be devicive. Not gonna happen!

  11. Ok Jaimie this is getting silly. Is giving a more accurate version of the quote really worthy of deletion?

  12. Time to acknowledge it. Rodgers agreed he should have changed earlier to 3 at the back. Not quite what you said but your point about doing it earlier was valid.
    Credit where credit's due...
No Rafa whilst BR is here. I've never said anything different. If he leaves, then I still think there are better alternatives, but maybe Rafa fancies doing a Mourinho..

  15. why do people always compare defensive minded midfielders with offensive midfielders?

    ReplyDelete
  16. I agree with you. Benitez is coming back to manage Liverpool without a quotation mark to hang his hat on.

  17. I totally agree with the lad,if he cant get game time, why waste more time while he is 23?infact thats a decision he could have made last summer considering his age and zeal to develop football wise

  18. unfortunately I do

  19. because they don't understand the game...

  20. Since when are Suso or Teixeira defensive-minded midfielders?

  21. Joe Allen I think he was talking about

  22. when did I say that suso and teixeira are defensive minded?

  23. My mistake, I read the first comment in the thread wrong.

  24. Honestly I see Joao Teixeira is more composed and better than Markovic, would love to see him on the 1st team.

  25. Yes if I get the free add myself...

  26. He probably needs to step up a bit more to convince the manager. Obviously Ibe had done enough and it was 100% the right move to bring him back. Suso never quite cut the mustard so really it's down to the player and how good they can really be. The simple truth is that only certain players will ever be good enough for the top flight. That's why it's the "top".

  27. sell him with a buy back option

    ReplyDelete
  28. "Instead of Ibe"?? From what I am seeing Jordan Ibe has been doing excellently since his return from loan. There is no guarantee that Teixeira would have done the same if he was recalled. If he wants to move on then let him. There is never any guarantee but at this moment Jordan has a much better chance of having a long career at Liverpool then Joan Teixeira does.

  29. BR recalled Ibe instead of Teixeira because Ibe is a better player with more potential. Mystery solved. Unless (God forbid) Ibe gets a life threatening injury I cannot see him not making it 'in the long run'. As the boy clearly has all the attributes and more importantly the attitude to succeed at the highest level in my opinion.

  30. Sell Teixeira with a buy back clause .

    ReplyDelete
  31. He had quite the serious back injury. He may blossom in his mid-20s

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yes because we never buy any of their scrap for 16 million...

  33. The kid is a good player there is no doubt about that but with Coutinho and Henderson playing the way they are, we don't need him here. Allen is coming into his own, Can is probably moving into midfield next year and let's f ace it, Texeira is not Gerrard's replacement. I just can't see it happening for him.

haha I'd rather pay newsnow to black list your website.

  35. Just another average youngster who hasn't got what it takes at the top level, he may make a decent career for himself but not at Liverpool. Nothing to see here folks, lets move it along.

I also don't get why people go on about Suso, yes we want to see youngsters come though but he never set the world alight, he looked to be a decent young player but nothing ever standout.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Based on Teixeira's game time in a top league? Markovic was excellent for Benfica and is starting to show signs of settling at Liverpool. Teixeira nowhere near his level.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Joe Allen been excellent in last few games, don't let your predetermined opinion get in the way though ;)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Very different players also. Texiera as a wingback? Nah.

    ReplyDelete
  39. The club has invested a lot in the player. He had a serious back problem that significantly hampered his development which the club saw him through. He's obviously very highly rated and I suspect he'll be given his chance

    ReplyDelete
  40. Do you think if Coutinho gets injured then a player like Teixeira can fill in as a young understudy to the magician? Reason I ask is we don't have a real back up number 10 even though Sterling could play there, possibly Lallana...

  41. And by the way where is Samed Yesil?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Watch more clip on him I'm sure you'll find his vid clip more than Markovic on YT.
