'German Messi' to Anfield? Liverpool want €30m playmaker who's 'flattered' by transfer interest

Last summer, the Liverpool Echo claimed that Liverpool wanted Schalke rising star Max Meyer, and it appears that the Reds are still tracking the exciting attacker, who is dubiously dubbed the 'German Messi'.

Chelsea made a €15m offer for Meyer during the January 2014 transfer window, and according to reports this week:

* Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal are all monitoring 19-year old Meyer.
* The 19-year old has a €30m (£21m) buyout clause in his contract.

When asked over the weekend about his future, Meyer told reporters:

"I seem to be so much in demand. I'm flattered because it's confirmation that you are doing well, but I'm enjoying myself at Schalke."

Some info about Meyer:

* 13 goals/8 assists in 76 apps for Schalke.
* 32 apps for various Germany youth teams.
* One game for the senior national team.
* This season: 6 goals/2 assists in 29 apps.
* 83% passing accuracy.
* 28 key passes.

* 2012: 3 goals during Germany's run to the U17 European Championships final.

* In the final, Holland defeated Germany on penalties, but after the game, Dutch defender Nathan Ake raved: "Meyer is their best player. He's quick and very dangerous. My coach told me to stay on him wherever he went and we'd have a better chance." Schalke's Kevin Prince Boateng is a fan of Meyer, and last season, he raved:

“He [Meyer] is one of the best players of his age I’ve ever played with. He keeps quiet off the pitch"

Meyer is often compared to his team-mate Julian Draxler, and the youngster is not impressed with such comparisons. In a recent interview with DerWesten, he noted:

"Julian is a great footballer, but every player stands for himself, and I think such comparisons actually rather inappropriate"

When asked whether he'd leave Schalke for a 'bigger' club in the near-future, Meyer added:

"It's every player's dream to play at a bigger club, but that's so far away. I would like to help Schalke, and who knows, maybe we will grow so much that I no longer have to leave".

When it comes to physicality, the Bundesliga is arguably comparable to the Premier League, and 76 appearances (league and Champions League) for a 19-year old is impressive stuff.

Worth a bid?

  1. I have liked what I have seen of him but wish there wasn't a Messi comparison.One issue we have is are we currently ahead of Shalke in world football to a German? They are not far off a CL spot. They did better in the tournament than we did. The only thing we could offer is more money.

  4. I like the way this kid speaks. I also like the way this kid plays aswell. Do we really need to be looking at him though? I personally think this coming window should be about top quality first team starters..

  5. I think they'd definately give us a run for our money... As for wages, Schalke could probably match LFC and their strict wage policy...Is Roberto Di Matteo enough to keep him though?

  6. Seems to have a great attitude. We seem spoiled for choices right now. Hopefully we make the right one.

    PS: JK, I think you left out a "<" in the link...

  9. Went to watch Schalke play Berlin at weekend and this lad was very disappointing. Every player is entitled to a bad game I know but he showed absolutely nothing. His movement was poor, he lost the ball numerous times and generally looked uninterested until he was substituted. I can't imagine we will get him cheap so I would say give it a miss, there are a lot better players out there.
    On a different subject though, if we are looking for a new striker in the summer Sane for Schalke looked quality and scored a brilliant goal.

  10. Diego Costa left Atletico.A club who won La Liga and were CL finalist to Real Madrid.For Chelsea who finished 3rd in the EPL and were knocked out and outplayed by His pervious side at the CL semi final stage.
    Liverpool shouldn't be worried if we have the pulling power or financials to attract one of Schalke's top players.We are the bigger club and can pay more.

  12. Possibly, but they are the 12th richest club in the world,and I would hazard a guess that Draxler Boateng and Howedes could rival our highest earners.
