Transfer Update: Liverpool chase 'talented' €25m playmaker betrayed by Man United. Double-swoop?

Liverpool are once again considering a move for Roma midfielder Adem Ljajic, who plays alongside Miralem Pjanic, another alleged LFC transfer target.

Liverpool were last linked with Ljajic in the lead-up to the 2014 summer transfer window, and according to Italian newspaper Tutto Mercato today:

* Liverpool, Manchester City, and Wolfsburg are all interesting in signing Ljajic this summer.

* Roma are desperate to extend Ljajic's contract in a bid to insert a bigger release clause.

Roma seems to be the go-to club for Liverpool transfer rumours. Over the last year, the Reds have been linked with Pjanic, Radja Nainggolan, Mattia Destro, Kevin Strootman, and now Ljajic; and let's not forget Fabio Borini who moved from Roma to Liverpool in 2012. Some info about Ljajic:

* 2009: Man United secured an option sign Ljajić, with the deal supposed to kick-in in January 2010, but Alex Ferguson welched on the deal, allegedly due to 'misgivings over the player's progress and development'.

* This cruel snub apparently caused Ljajic 'psychological shock', a condition with which many United fans are familiar after witnessing their train-wreck of a team time slide into abject mediocrity under David Moyes.

* 2012: Ex-Fiorentina boss Delio Rossi lost his job after attacking Ljajic in the dugout.
* 2012: Barred from the Serbia squad for refusing to sing the national anthem.

* 15 goals/8 assists in 62 games for Roma.
* Goal/Assist ever 2.5 games.
* Current contract runs until June 2017.
* Release clause: €25m

Is Ljajic - recently hailed by Roma boss Rudi Garcia as 'extremely talented' an upgrade on the attacking players already in Liverpool's squad? He looks like a decent player, but so did international team-mate Lazar Markovic, and so far, the £20m signing has struggled to make a consistent impact at Anfield.

Double-swoop with Pjanic this summer?

  1. Seems like a very "Markovic-esque" player in style and output. We have our own, and he's improving quite nicely. Marko is bigger, and faster too. Not sure if we need Ljajic. If we were to get an AM, I'd rather Konoplyanka on free. He'd probably want to come to Liverpool too if he found out we were back in for him.

    Don't need him. Overrated and with a dubious mentality.

  3. We used to love the odd free/cheap player. If that's still the case, then Konoplyanka is an absolute no-brainer and most likely better value than Lallana.

  4. We're well stocked in attacking midfield. There are more pressing areas of the squad we'll need to concentrate our funds on imo

  5. No need to waste funds on him ,Money is going to be tight this transfer window and BR needs to be VERY wise as to who he buys.

  6. There are going to be alot of very good FREE AGENTS this summer transfer .
    Jaimie maybe you need to do an article on who is available .

  7. I would said he's good but so is Joao Carlos Teixeira, our little Portugal magician, right now all he needs is experience and game time from BR.

  8. How come you dont get a third choice with the survey how about i am not paying a subscription but will try hard to get in for free.

  9. Roma's owner is a major shareholder in FSG, so a good place for poaching, but not this player,
    Re paying a monthly subscription, I suggest Jaimie you look at RedmenTV, who offer Build up shows, interviews with Players/Managers,
    half time discussion, post match discussion,fan reaction after match etc etc all for £2 a month 1st month free, and all on Video TV, do you intend leaving this site in its present format, and charging a monthly fee, ??
    I am in Singapore/Indonesia right now, but will discuss this when ~~I return at the end of the month.

  10. Konoplyanka is a top player. It would be an absolute coup to sign him on a free.

  11. Well the attacking mids do the most pressing...

    Sorry; I'm having a sugary breakfast.

  12. But still less than 50%, right? Otherwise that would kind of mean FSG own Roma too...I think...

  13. What concerns me about Texeira is that he's 22 yet still being developed like a 19yo

  14. Then there is thisisanfield all free, less reception and deletion. TAW who have a couple of podcasts and free articles on their site. They are going to begin to charge for the larger output they intend on producing. The anfield index has multiple podcasts a week as well as well researched knowledgeable stats based articles. Considering the market the product would have to improve markedly.

  15. I think he is a minority shareholder in FSG but a majority shareholder in Roma if o remember rightly. Which is unlikely.

  16. Saw a stat today saying we average 2.8pts per game without SG in starting 11 compared to 1.4 with- on another note Skirtel has been outstanding recently wonder could we cope without him- I doubt it

  17. You are in Indonesia youre not part of the Bali 9 are ya naa just kidding must be a good job travelling like that.

  18. Probably had enough time off with injury to be considered around 19 developmentally speaking.

  19. No doubt that SG struggles to keep pace with the team nowadays. It's not a recent development, either.

    SG still has spectacular skills, but he's not an automatic starter anymore. Would have been great to keep around the squad, but as the man himself said, it was the idea of fighting for his place that most made him want to leave.

  20. I don't think we have anyone in the air as good as Skrtel but otherwise I think Toure and even Lovren could do the central role job. Skrt has been emense now for a while. I think the defined roles and areas this system gives players helps a lot.

  21. Seems as though all of these football websites are struck on the idea that we will be buying 5+ players in the summer each courting a fee in excess of £20m - Where will we be getting the money from Jamie? Time and time again sites like Metro and this one are stating that there will be player after player coming in.

    It appeared that we were going to be buying a number of players during the January transfer window, BR himself stated that there would be no business other than one or two players going out on loan. Yet time and time again, quotes of this player or that in talks. Wrong.

    We are going through a massive transition with younger players starting to become fruitful. Coutinho, Ibe, Sterling, Henderson, Sturridge, Moreno, Can, Markovic, Manquillo, all of these youngsters are the future of the club. We have an abundance in the youth team ready to step up. Add to that the major building works that the club are undertaking, for these reasons and the increasing debt on the club I do not see many players being brought in.

    Our defense is now starting to come together and we have players able to rotate. Toure may have one season left but I don't see him being there too long so perhaps a replacement coming in? Wisdom and Jones are out on loan gaining valuable experience so why buy?

    In midfield we have an abundance or ball winners and creative players so again, we just need to tweak and add value to a side that is not far from top 4.

    Up front Lambert and Borini's days are numbered I think and unless there is a massive turn around, Balotelli might have just another season. Danny Ings has been linked and has turned a possible move to Spain down with many siting the reason of a move to Liverpool.

    All in all I doubt we will be spending too much money for the next year or so. This is why I find it funny seeing so many players "being linked" with LFC day after day.

    I guess you have to write something :)

  22. You are so right !
    No matter what BR and Ian Ayre says the media still has to write a story .
    We are the chops that read and believe them

  24. My guess is a player or two. Maybe, just maybe three, with at least three going...

  25. Can same person(business group) own two clubs compeeting in the same competition? Did that happen with Chelsea and a Russian club?

  26. It is becaue we upped our form not(just) because Stevie isn't there...

  27. If we want to go farther, we need more world class players. Simple. We just can't compete against a team like Chelsea, simply because they are better. Hard to take in, but it's true. Costa, Courtois, Hazard, the list goes on, we can't better them with average players. Even Man U. will most likely buy players like Hummels or Vidal this summer, and to match, we need our own set. I very much like the youth and potential we have in our squad, but some players can be replaced. And some players need to be replaced, starting with Gerrard. Pjanic or even Nainggolan are great steps forward, but we have proven we are too scared to put pen on paper and sign these players, which is why we usually overpay for some players, just to say we did (Lallana, Lovren, even though Lallana is doing well). It's sad but it's the truth, we can't afford to lose to teams like Basel and Ludogorets in CL, and we certainly can change that.

  29. I don't thibk he has anything to do with kop holdings and so is not an owner of Liverpool. As I say I am not all that knowledgeable about it but will have a look when I get a chance.
