Great News? 'Exceptional' £15m Barcelona star believes he'll join Liverpool. Done Deal in the summer?

Over the summer, Liverpool were heavily linked with a move for £15m-rated Barcelona midfielder Alex Song, and many fans were disappointed when Brendan Rodgers failed to pursue the deal. Liverpool continue to be linked with a move for Song, and new reports claim that the midfielder - currently on loan at West Ham - is convinced he'll be a Liverpool player next season.

According to the Daily Mail:

* Liverpool are still interested in signing Song as a potential replacement for Steven Gerrard.

* Song 'believes' he will get a move to Liverpool or Manchester City this summer.

In a recent column for the Daily Mail this week, Redknapp hailed Song as 'outstanding', and suggested that his performances 'are the reason West Ham [reached] third in the table'. He enthused:

"He [Song] is exceptional. Who is going to take him at the end of the year? He [Song] will have a lot of options come the end of the season when his loan from Barcelona comes to an end".

Anfield legend Jamie Carragher is also a fan of Song, and in a recent interview, he enthused:

"Big, powerful and versatile, Song would definitely give an edge to any midfield. He was suited to the physical side of the game when he was here with Arsenal".

When asked recently about his future, Song - who reportedly earns £140k a week at West Ham - told reporters:

"For now I don't know what's happening [about my future] other than that I just want to play, help the club and then we'll see at the end of the season."

The Barcelona deal always seemed like a strange move to me; Song is clearly more suited to the Premier League style of play, and with Barca's huge array of top quality players, Song's chances of attaining a regular, long-term starting role at the club seem slim.

I still can't understand why Rodgers didn't snap him up during the summer. Song is exactly the type of midfielder needed in the squad, and he probably would've hit the ground running at Anfield and made an immediate impact (just as he has at West Ham).

That said, West Ham are on the slide at the moment, and Song's influence appears to be waning, but there's only so much one man can do.

Should Liverpool sign Song in the summer, or stick with Lucas and Joe Allen?

  1. Get song in and keep Allen!

  2. Song would be great. We let Lucas &/or Allen go!

  3. Jamie, not another false headline. Where and when did Song say he was convinced he will join Liverpool? I am a sports journo and I have yet to come across such a statement from him.

  4. Song or Illara should be our priority. I've been pushing for Illara for a few weeks now, but the more I think about it the more I believe Song would actually be a better choice. Cheaper, recently proven in EPL, hardly old (though Illara has a higher upside) and won't demand games. He'll expect to play but he'll understand the competition with Lucas. Illara will really only want to go somewhere where he's guaranteed the playing time he won't get at Real. If he's willing to leave Spain, or even leave Real period.

  7. I've watched this guy & I agree. The chances of us getting him is really slim, I suspect he'll opt to go psg or even Real Madrid.

  8. I reckon Lucas is better than Song. I'm not really aboard the Alex Song hype train, to be honest.

  9. Performances since joining West Ham have been riddled with errors. He's past it. Would be a good experienced head to bring in, no doubt: a Toure replacement more than a Gerrard replacement. I think there are better choices available, especially in the Bundesliga, and under the age of 25, if we are seriously looking for a DM.

  10. West Ham fan here, Song at the start of the season was unreal and I believed we should do anything we could to sign him (albeit I highly doubt he'd join us permanently) however since Christmas he has been so poor for a player to have played for Arsenal and Barcelona I can't believe how much he gives the ball away when he has no pressure on him and he likes to get the ball near the defence and run out with it, at the start of the season it worked well but lately he just keeps losing and giving away needless fouls. Many of the people I sit near at West Ham don't even want him maybe he knows now he used us a stepping stone and will get what he wants but he's not the player he is being hyped up as. One goal we scored this season where he played this amazing threw ball to Downing and he run through and scored everyone raved about it however in that same game in the first half he was the worst player on the pitch I don't even think he successfully made one pass. He has the quality to play for Liverpool however I don't know if he'd be consistent enough to be a top 4 player anymore.

  11. Only so mutch one man can do..... he's been our worst player since christmas. Honestly if he doesn't fancy it he's less than useless, also he's on 60k a week at west ham plus 20k to barcelona as a loan fee. Not worth that for a player who only turns up 50% of the time.

  12. Has been absolutely useless for us since Xmas and gets subbed every game

    You're welcome

  15. Not a DM. Good shout though.

  16. I've seen him play...in no way do I think it's 'great news' that he'd be playing for LFC. The truth is he has been found wanting by two good teams. Why we would want to spend money on him I don't know.

  18. Alex Song is a rubbish player and we MUST steer clear of him even if he were available on a free transfer. He spends way too much time on the ball and loses it a lot in such a critical position on the pitch as the DM role. He is worse than Allen and certainly not as good as Lucas.

  19. Think it's worth pointing out that the club posted a profit this year for the first time in seven years. FSG deserve huge credit for the speed in which they've turned around the club's finances. They inherited a club in financial ruin and now we're turning a profit, the stadium is underway and there has been significant investment in the playing squad throughout their tenure. Bloody good work!

  20. Song or Schneiderlin for me. Prefer the latter. Gerro leaving and Can sometimes filling in at the back leaves us light in central midfield. Lucas as well seems to be perpetually injured and then takes forever to regain full fitness and form (though he is great when fully fit and on form). Allen too seems to pick up various niggles regularly and then takes time to regain top form. Illaramendi a good player I think, but it would be a big risk to pay someone as young as him, with a build like his, in a CDM position in the premier league. Desperately need another keeper to keep Mignolet honest, another top striker (Lacazette would be perfect, though I'm not sure how realistic it is) and to get rid of the huge amount of dead weight on our books (Borini, Balotelli, Aspas, Coates, Toure, Jones, Johnson, Enrique, Alberto), and another left back, as Moreno, while doing a fine job, is having to play almost every game, and when he isn't playing, we struggle on his side.

  21. Have him, Kouyate is twice the player he is and without the ridiculous ego to go with it.

  22. I was a big Song fan and wanted him at the start of the season.
Did He not say that West ham would make CL when joined them . Not so sure anymore Liverpool really need somebody as Lucus seems to take ages to recover and Allen seem to need to play alot to get any form.

  23. Get Song urgently...and let Lucas and Allen leave.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Agreed with you though..let Lucas and Allen leave.

  25. Reckon we could do better than Song.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think Song isn't easily overrun with quick players from midfield & is more physically imposing. Lucas possibly has better positional sense, perhaps as a result of lacking the recovery pace. Overall, Song contributes more offensively with better probing passes.

  27. lets first sell Allen and or lucas then we sign him up... Im an african myself but i must say the timing of the African Cup of nations in the middle of the season really disrupts things just look at Man City, they had to lose Yaya for the fa cup game and the game against chelsea.. in fact im sure if we analysed it city lost a few games while he was away...

  28. He'd be in the team as the only defensive midfielder, though. We've moved past the blasted quarterback thing.

The stories are Lucas wants to go back to Brazil in the summer so it looks like Allen will be staying

  30. As a West Ham fan with friends who support your lot to be honest I don't see why you'd want Song at the moment. At the beginning of the season for us he was great, since Christmas he's been one of our worst performers (yes really!) He seems to only put in any effort against the top teams and otherwise is quite disinterested. I don't know if he'd work as hard as you guys would need for a long term Stevie replacement. I think you could do better to be honest. Congrats on your result at the weekend!

  31. Song has some of the poorest opta stats of any defensive midfielder with an overall current total that is in negative figures of -1.3 when compared to our existing pairing of Lucas and Allen that also do the same job.

    ReplyDelete
  32. That's gracious of you, Hammer.

    ReplyDelete
  33. As a West Ham ST holder, I can honestly say that Song has been pretty woeful in 2015. Flashes of brilliance are not enough when you're supposed to be anchoring midfield. Being overrun, taking too long on the ball and generally thinking you're better than you are don't normally warrant £100k a week. Of course, on his day is top class, but we've not seen a day like that for 2 months.

  34. Is Song available on a free??

    ReplyDelete
  35. Had loads of work on and then had a bit of a bender.

    ReplyDelete
  36. With Gerrard leaving, I think Song can be put into the team alongside Henderson and Lucas/Allen, he is just as good attacking as he is defending, he has shown that at his time in Arsenal. Song has a lot to offer and is still yet to his peak form! YNWA

    ReplyDelete
  37. Quite right too. What a game on Sunday...

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yeah day two of the bender. Watched all three games. Ours was easily the only one worth watching. We were awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  39. He's on a free right? On a free, you can't go wrong with this one. Unless you have to pay him 150k a week.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Isn't he out of contract in the summer?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Thanks for the input, mate. I've always thought he lacked the mental steel to take his place in the upper echelons of the game. From his bizarre elbow in the World Cup (though some would put that down to corruption as opposed to an apparent idiotic episode) to the way his concentration seemed to be able to evapourate at a moment's notice when he anchored Arsenal's midfield.

He's definitely got talent, but I don't personally trust him, based on what I've seen. Admittedly, I've seen less of him since he moved to West Ham, so that's why it's good to have the opinion of someone who gets to see him every week and even better, someone who can watch him live.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Song is better physically and does have a better range of passing, but I believe he lacks the mental game of Lucas and doesn't (based on his Arsenal and Barca days) have the same appreciation of his role on the pitch that Lucas does.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Two ways of looking at the whole mental aspect. One they both give away needless free kicks due to lapses in concentration. I think Song has that extra bite or spite, however you decide to look at it. It's in our history to have a lunatic in the middle who can also play. Souness & Mcmahon come to mind & they careers coincided with success for liverpool. I understand the opinion of hammers fans is important but every gunner I've spoke to say Wenger mistakenly overlooked Song. So I'm considering their opinion too. Lucas has been a great servant but we lack an aggressive drive from the middle that he could never provide.

  44. Has'nt set the world on fire for WestHam, not sure he's good enough, there's plenty better than him.
